    And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now.     Um, I do know what I'm talking about. My elementary school used to be a school for the mentally retarded. That's what it said on the sign. When they turned it into a regular elementary school, the other schools used to call us the Richard Retards. If you say it with a Cajun accent, it rhymes. Aren't they clever?

    Yes, I know what it means, and it still offends me when people call me that. Where do you get off telling people that they don't know what they are talking about when they live with it every day.
     
    My 5 year old godson is bipolar and has a sensory processing disorder that is on the autism spectrum. Did I say it right?

    Doesn't anyone else think this is just ironic?  Everyone on the other thread was upset that someone else used the word...now it is okay to throw around because the OP was upset (albeit a little bitchy) about the whole situation?  Wow.

    I used to think people were too mean on this blog. Now I see that most of the time it's bc some people on here really are RIDICULOUS.

    Seriously? I can't use the word "retarded" even when describing a retarded person? Sorry, but when you can't even use actual words to describe their real definition, that's too PC for me.

    I totally get that certain words shouldn't be abused or thrown around lightly... but there's a certain point where it's ok to use them.

    So my sister is autistic. I beg of you, if the subject is autism, how else should I describe her except as "my autistic sister"? Shall I use a code word?

    Mostly, she is "my sister", but if we're on the subject, I'm not going to pretend everything's 100% normal. It's no better for her than anybody else.

    Last I checked, autism is a diagnosis, not an offensive term.

    I fully admit to not reading anything more than the first page of this thread, because my eyes are killing me today, but I think the OP is being a teensy bit demanding of people here. I get the language thing that she's getting at, but this is definitely not the way to go about making people change their minds about it. Some may never, and find it too PC.

    Also, comparing saying "my autistic brother" to calling someone "retarded" doesn't make much sense. "Retarded" is an antiquated and/or literal way to describe someone with MR (in that their cognitive functioning has been retarded), but it's turned into a slang term that is potentially offensive to people. But "autistic" still remains a legit diagnosis and condition, and while the placement of the term in describing someone might imply labeling, it's not a loaded term like "retarded" is.

    So methinks the OP should get off her high horse and choose her battles more wisely. Or at least not come off as a condescending douche while making her points.
