"Dummy cakes"?

Did anyone use a dummy cake for the first few layers? What bakery did you use? I heard Sharon's Cakes had been dummy cakes, but anyone else?

I know that Cindy Fiala (Cindy's Cakes) does as well - we considered it since our cake is going to be pretty small but I believe that the fake layers are almost as expensive as a real layer!

The 2 vendors I talked to both were going to run the same price for a dummy cake as a regular cake.  Said the time and money comes from the decorating, not necessarily the cake.

BUT - sheet cakes are a fraction of the price!!  We're doing a very small, simple decorated cake that's only 2 layers (with the pillars so we can add a third "layer" of flowers to make it look larger/more elegant) & pretty much feeding everyone from sheet cakes!
