Marriage License help?!

I've lurked a little and think i understand, but I'm not quite sure...

FI and I go into the probate office in our county (getting married in Fulton, but getting our license in Bulloch because tha'ts where we live).

We bring 2 forms of ID and cash. Then we fill out the license there.

We then keep the license. On the day of the wedding we sign it with our officiant and date it and then turn it back into the Bulloch office when we get back.

Then they'll mail me a marriage certificate for name changes.

Is this correct? If not, what's the step by step process? meh

Re: Marriage License help?!

  • I believe that is correct. Although FI and I only needed our drivers licenses.

  • I think you have it. We were told to have our officiant mail it back to the probate court, but I'm not sure if it matters if you mail it or hand deliver it. Oh, and we only needed one form of ID (although I brought our passports, just in case).
And, I THINK that you have to contact them for the marriage license and pay $20. Or maybe that was for an official copy. They said it takes 2-3 weeks for the license to come in, and then you need the copies for your name change.
  • PPs, how soon before the actual wedding day should the couple go the county probate office to fill out the license?

Our wedding is in a little over two weeks and we got ours yesterday. I don't think it matters, you can go the day of the wedding and get it. Although they aren't open on the weekend, so even Friday before would probably be fine. I personally wouldn't want to wait that long though.

  • Thanks for all the help! I was really getting anxious about this part of the process because I would just get confused when I read about it online.

  • This is a great question. I am getting married in Richmond County (Augusta, GA) bit my fiance and I live in California. I was told I had to get the license where I am getting Married, not where I actually live. Has anyone been told the same thing? If not, then we can just get the license in Cali...that will be much easier for us! Thanks!

  • Does anyone know how it works if you and your FI are currently residents of two different states?

Are you two planning to move to GA before the wedding? Or are you just performing the ceremony in GA? From what I understand, I think either the bride or the groom have to be a resident of a state to get a marriage license from there.

Here's the link to my county's marriage license requirements (I think it's pretty much the same for any county here though): http://www.claytoncountyga.gov/courts/probate-court/marriage-license.aspx

We're just having the ceremony in GA for now, but we'll probably be moving back in about 2-3 years. Does it make a difference if you're from one county but the ceremony is in another county? I'm from Fulton and our wedding will be at the Carl House..I'm not sure that's still in Fulton county.

If either the bride or groom is a resident of Georgia, they can get their license from any county and get married in any county in the state, doesn't need to be the same county.
