14 year old Jr Bridesmaid Dress question

Ok so my maid of honors daughter is my jr bridesmaid and she is 14 and rail thin mind you!!!!!!

I cant decide if i want to but her in the same dress as my girls (which her mother is fine with) or a Jr Bridesmaid dress....I think my issue is i still see her as an 8 year old little girl :)

this is the dress my girls are wearing.....and the dress shop said i can add straps or make it a halter anything really....i just think its a bit old for her but everyone else thinks i still see her as a little flower girl :) (and i do lol)

Re: 14 year old Jr Bridesmaid Dress question

  • Put her in the same dress as your other bridesmaids.

I think the title of junior bridesmaid is completely ridiculous and sometimes hurtful to teenagers becasue a junior bridesmaid has the same duites as regular bridesmaids and that is to buy the dress and show up presentable for your wedding.  Pointing out that they are junior is sometimes a slap in the face.

As for adding straps to the dress, leave that decision up to the girl and her mother.

  • She's walking down the aisle, holding flowers, and smiling for pictures.  She's a bridesmaid.  As for the dress, ask her what she's comfortable wearing, which is a conversation you're hopefully having with all of your girls.  It's her body, and she's certainly old enough to make the decision and express what she likes and thinks will work best.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I'm with you on the whole "jr Bridesmaid" thing...doesnt make sense to me but i have been told off on these board before for going against etiquette rules!!!

And yes i took all 10 of my bridemaids dress shopping and all agreed on the dress SHOCKINGLY!!!!!

And i have also asked Jordyn which dress she likes best and she could really careless what i put her in, she is just excited to be part of it....its me thats hung up on the dress being to mature for her....like i said she is 14 and hasnt "developed" and the dress is sweetheart neckline with beading under the breasts.....i didnt want her to look silly and of course the dress is no where locally for her to try it on.....

i guess i will just have to face facts she is an adult lol

  • There is no etiquette rule pertaining to the junior bridesmaid title.  The title is dumb so just don't use it.

As far as her not being "developed" that has no impact on her wearing the same dress as the others.  I know a fair amount of adults who are lacking in the chest area that still wear sweethear or strapless dresses and they certainly do not look silly.

  • See if you can find a dress in a similar cut for her to try.  I agree that the sweetheart neckline probably isn't going to do much for someone who's flat-chested, but it might be possible to alter it into something a little less pronounced.

Keep in mind that a teenager's body can change quite a bit in 9 months, so what works for her now might not be feasible by the time of the wedding, so she might be able to fill out that neckline a bit more by the time the wedding rolls around.

  • Drop the Jr. title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ask her what she wants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most people that can, go dress shopping together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Sweetheart is actually good for a smaller chest, FYI. I am not well-endowed at all and looked quite curvy in my sweetheart-neckline wedding dress.

Leave the straps decision to her mom. Drop the 'junior.' You mentioned etiquette; it's not good etiquette to give someone a different title based on their age when they're doing the exact same thing as the older girls.

  • I know you said you are dropping the title, which is great, but I just want to give you my story for anyone else planning on using this title,

When I was 13, my sister had me as her 'junior bridesmaid' in her wedding, I hated it because I was a teenager and not 'junior' at all, I was made to feel like a child, almost like a flower girl, my mother made me a dress the replicated the brides (similar to what brides have flower girls wear) I was to toss petals down the aisle as I walked in front of everyone. It was almost humiliating be given the title of 'junior bridesmaid' but to be treated like a flower girl (I think my sister believed I was too old to be flower girl but too young to be a bridesmaid) I have never forgotten how it felt to be treated this way.

Now that I am getting married, I am including my 12 year old niece in my BP, I have never once referred to her as a junior bridesmaid, I am putting her in the same dress as the bridesmaids, she is having the same bouquet as the bridesmaids and I have always called her a bridesmaid. I would not wish on anyone (especially her) the feelingsI felt when I was made a junior bridesmaid, and have done my best to make her feel like part of the BP, including giving her a say on the dresses, letting her pick her hair/shoes/accessories etc.

At 14, I think your friends daughter is old enough to decide herself, let her wear the same dress and treat her like a teenager, not an older flower girl
  • i honestly had no idea that she wasnt "supposed to be" considered a jr bridesmaid....

I am not one of those people who follows rules of wedding or reads up on traditions and or etiquette....

i just thought because she was a young age that was what she was supposed to be called....so i am guessing my 13 year old nephew isnt gonna be called jr usher or groomsmen anymore either....

honestly through  the past weddings i have been a part of thought this was a normal title.....see what happens when you assume :)

    lol

    thanks again

  • One of my bridesmaids is 14 also and she will be wearing the same dress as my maid of honor and other bridesmaid. All the girls tried on the dress when we found it; the youngest was actually the first one to come out in the dress and we all fell in love with it. We are adding straps to all the dresses, mainly because the older girls are quite busty. It is weird since I still see the 14 year old as the little 3 year old my sister and I used to swing around. They grow up so fast :.
