Wedding Big Five

So in Africa they have what are referred to as the 'big five' wild game animals: elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, lion and leopard. apparently a hunter is celebrated when he or she gets one of each.

well...i'd like to propose that there is a wedding 'big five' vendors and that (for me, at least) they are: wedding date, ceremony location and/or officiant, reception location, caterer and photographer.

well...i have taken down all five!
1. date: september 8, 2012
2. ceremony: St. Mary's Catholic Church, German Village
3. reception: Via Vecchia Winery, Brewery District
4. caterer: Catering by Scott
5. photographer: Kelly Maughan Photography

Couldn't be happier! Now I'm taking a wedding break...

What are/were your 'big five'? What things did you book right away?

i also heard bad things about Catering by Scott, but he seemed really nice when we met with him but he does make a lot of promises. Right off the bat i told him my budget for the food on the phone and he told me that was easily do-able, then when I got the quote, which took 2 weeks because he forgot, it was for about 4000 dollars over what I had sad, and he charged me for all the stuff he said was free. But that was all we did with him because we chose a different route, but I did like how he brought us tastings to our first meeting without asking, but when we asked to taste different foods he gave us an attitude and said nicely no.

    My top 5:

    1) Photography and Video: Picture Perfect Photographers, fell in love with their work and their prices are reasonable.
    2) Venue: The Columbus Athenaneum: Fell in love with the place, it gave me the wedding vibe and I thought i wanted something completely different and I loved it.
    3) Caterer: The columbus athenaneum: have not tried their food yet but i hope it is pretty good.
    4) Church: St. Simon and Jude: My parents wanted me to get married in a church so we decided that it would be easiest at their church. It is a nice church in west jefferson.
    5) Date: 11/10/2012: we chose this day because it is an Ohio State by week! But really we chose it becuase we wanted a fall date and where looking toward october but the venue we were orginally going to go with was closed, Via Vecchia, so when we changed venues we still decided to keep that date.

thanks tiffany. not much we can do about it but we'll keep an eye out for mischief i guess. and get everything in writing.

  • edited December 2011
    What Tiffany said plus:

I have heard from VERY reliable sources that he offers for "free" such things as: linens of your choosing, Cake, Ice sculptures, dishes and other services.  He offers all of these things free but raises the prices on everything else.  The linens that he says are free of charge are not floor length, they are just standard.  The cake will NOT be what you ask for.  The dishes that he claims are an upgrade are really just the dishes that every caterer should offer to anyone.  He claimed that he was "throwing in" real dishes instead of plasticware... really? I kid you not.  I don't know about the Ice sculptures because the bride that was promised this isn't married yet but after her wedding I will let you know what kind of dissaster that turns out to be.

On top of all that, if you have a planner, forwarn them because he is very diva and likes to make everything all about him.  He will butt his nose into everything and play games with them that can only be discribed as grandstanding.

Cliffnotes version: You won't get what he promises you.  Be very careful and have balls when dealing with him because to me it seems like he believes every bride is effing stupid and tries to pull things over on you.

I really cringed when I saw you went with Via Vecchia because I know that he is the only caterer that they offer.  If I were you, I would call up or visit whoever you booked with at Via and tell them that you are hearing HORRIBLE reviews from everyone about Scott and that they should really consider having another catering option or it's going to run THEM into the ground.

EDIT: Via Vecchia is a beautiful venue... and I know that you want your wedding to be wonderful, as do I!  It is REALLY unfortunate that they don't allow any other caterers... it would benefit them greatly if they had at least one or two other options...
