WHY is this happening??!!

My reception venue called to let me know they had double booked our space. And since the other party put down their deposit first, they get the space. It happened during a re-hiring of event coordinators at the restaurant.

Just under 40 days to go and I have no venue....Cry at least they gave us our deposit back.

Re: WHY is this happening??!!

  • I must say this is my worst nightmare.  Our venue coordinator just left and her "replacement" hasn't returned my calls or emails in over a week.  I'm so worried that the venue is shutting down or something.

I'm so sorry you're going through this!

  • This is horrible. I'm so sorry.

Did they at least recommend replacement venues??? Any leads yet?

  • Ugh!!!!!!!!! They should do more than refund you. They should offer you some kind of gift or something. How horrid!
  • Oooooohhhh Mmmmmm Geeeeee!!! WHAT?  That is insane. They should not only refund your money, but they need to do some other compensation for canceling your reception one month out!  I would be absolutely livid.  Maybe you can appeal to the other places.  Girl I am SO sorry to hear that.  Please let us know what happens.  *hug*  I see that your guest list is for 20, so maybe there is a nice restaurant that will help you out?

  • Double check your contract - are they even ALLOWED to get away with this?
  • Holy sh!t! That's terrible!

I agree that the venue should do more than just refund your deposit, they should do what is in their power to help find you a different venue using their contacts, etc.

I hope one of the two other alternatives works out. Fingers crossed for you!

  • ((HUGS))  --- Keep your cool and you will be fine!!! Sending you good vibes.  I have to say this was one of my nightmares too!!!  Everything will be beautiful just like you imagined!!
  • I think if one of your alternatives is over-budget, you should ask the original venue to make up the difference, honestly. It's ridiculous! If you'd cancelled on them, you'd lose your deposit right? It's not fair the lose nothing here.

  • ((((hugs)))

That is so super bogus!! I am so sorry. But since you do have such an intimate guest list, can you find a restaurant or something? And yeah, I would be all over my contract seeing about what more they should be doing for you.
And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image
  • Stay calm.  This happened to my brother.  He paid for the venue, then they said it would be closed due to remodeling THREE WEEKS before his wedding.

So, SIL called the DJ and said, "Hey, we don't have a venue right now.  Just wanted to give you a heads up."

The DJ put in some phone calls and them got another venue -- at a discounted rate because he was friends with the coordinator.

Contact all your vendors you have contracted, explain the situation.  They may be able to find you a place in your budget or give you a recommendation.

And to let your guests know about the location change, my brother had the previous venue pay for postcards to tell guests about the venue change since that was an expense he should not have had to pay.

I hope everything works out.  This is a total nightmare, I'm sure!

  • I am SO sorry to hear this!!! Like PP have said, please make sure they can even get away with doing this to you. Exhaust every option available!

Maybe another venue will "take pity" on your situation and even give you a discount, OR if they are more expensive than your original venue, they'll offer you their venue for your price range!

Good luck and please keep us updated

Catarntina is right. You know what.. let yourself freak out for a minute. Then breathe. The coordinator at my venue said this happens.... he put together a GORGEOUS wedding in less than 2 weeks for a couple who came to him in this situation. Start making phone calls... this could even end up working to your advantage as people might jump in to save the day and make the day extra special.
  • I'm so sorry this is happening. Like PPs said pull all of your resources, try to stay calm, you'll figure something out. Let us know what happens.

  • Sue! Sue!  Okay, that was my first reaction, but PPs have great advice:  use your vendors, contact the other venues, and try to keep calm.  And I like Lulu's comment that they should make up any cost difference.  That's outrageous!  GL!
  • wow i cant imagine!!! ((HUGS) please keep us posted! I hope it all works out

  • Sorry to hear, Babycaykes!  I noticed that you are getting married in Venice...hopefully some restaurants can accomodate your guest list.  Not sure what your budget is, but I've checked out Shanghai Red's for reception in Marina Del Rey, and they have great water views.  There's a Cheesecake Factory in the area too.  Within Venice, C & O's offer good pasta for reasonable price.  And their garlic rolls are yummy.  Monsoon's in 3rd Street Promenade Santa Monica has a nice, private room in the back, and they offer reasonable per person of $25 plus drinks.  But they offer Thai\Asian food?
  • I don't think I have anything to say that hasn't been said, but I just wanted to add that I'll be thinking about you and sending good vibes.  Please tell us what happens, and do go through your contract with a fine-toothed comb to see what the old venue can and can't do in this situation.  Good luck!

  • Ok, so I was able to get ahold of my 2nd choice venue. It's tough putting the legwork in all by myself, because we're going so small, there are no other vendors to help me out. Basically, we're taking our pastor and going to get married on the beach with only our kids in attendance. Then we'll have the reception later that night at a restaurant.

I was semi-ok yesterday and then I called this new venue and as I was explaining to the girl what happened I broke down crying. Oh it was terrible. But you know what, I see now it was all meant to be. I don't know if she's taken pity on me or what, but we chatted for hours and she's sooooo nice and was understanding and she said that since their prices are a little higher, that she'd give us the bigger private space without the added fee, and they're gifting us a wedding cake! Which is awesome! The first place was going to make our cake, but this new place doesn't make red velvet. So she said find a bakery, have a cake made, and they'll pay for it and not charge a cake cutting fee!

I feel better about everything now. Thanks ladies.

As for the first place, I wrote an angry-gram to their owner, letting them know exactly what I think of their service and non-offer of help after leaving me high and dry. I'll let you know if they write back.
