UGH favors POLL (and long)

With just a little over 2 months away from the wedding, I am starting to freak out about (stupid) things. I am worried about the favors; I think that we should give our guests something, even if it is something small, just to show that we thought of them. My FI thinks it is a waste of money and the food that we bought for them is enough. I am having trouble because anything that I come up with he hates, and if it costs over $50 for everyone he says it’s a waste.

Originally, I wanted to do shot glasses with our names and date on it. But, this is a wedding not a raging party, and also my FI and I don’t even drink that much so it might seem kind of out of place. And I know that some people do not care for anything personalized with our information on it!

Then, I really wanted to do a candy buffet, and I thought he would love it. But when I showed it to him, he said it would cost too much and take up too much space. With the cost of the jars, candy, scoops, and bags, it does come out to be a little pricier than I expected.

Now, I really want to do votive candle holders with our guests names hand painted on them. I can get a great deal online for the glass and candles and the glass paint is really cheap. My friend had wine glasses with the guests initials etched in and it was a really cute idea. FI thinks that the DIY won’t work out and we will have wasted out money. But I am very handy and crafty, if I can remodel my bathroom by myself, I can write some damn names on a glass. I also don’t know if I will have a candle in the holder or maybe fill it with candy.

I am just so torn, should I do nothing and my guest’s won’t mind, should I do something that takes a lot of time and some guests won’t even take them, or should I just do some simple candy wrapped in tulle or something like that??

Sorry for being so whiny, it just feels so much better once it is all out J

Personally, I would wind up leaving many of those suggestions behind. I tend to like things in sets, so glasses, candles etc, would get left behind because I would think it would be out of place in my home / on my desk with just the one.  Or I would be worried about transporting it back in my luggage because I buy a lot of souveniers etc, and luggage space / weight is at a premium with all the luggage charges.

I think for a destination wedding, you'd be better off with candy or something smallish and hardy (ie. not glass / breakable)  that isn't a hassle for you (or your guests) to transport. That way, if they don't take it, no big whoop, it wasn't like you had to struggle to get them there. And they may be more likely to take it since it's not a hassle for them to chuck it in a suitcase and get on the plane.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I wish I was a DIY-er. I try to be, but it just never seems to turn out right for me, so I have to keep it simple! :-)

Edible favors are ideal. Maybe a small scale candy buffet, maybe 3-4 candies? You can get jars and bags for dirt cheap and you can use spoons at the venue as scoops. The only real expense would be the candy.

As a guest I probably would leave anything else and wouldn't want anything glass, especially if I'm flying.

For me, I've never really understood the idea of favors and I tend to feel the same way as your FI.  Maybe that sounds selfish on my part but I do feel that feeding & boozing your guests is a huge thank-you for coming to the wedding.  With that said, as a guest I would prefer edible favors over little knick-knacks.  Like MizLynn said, I'd probably end up leaving them or forgetting them or would really have no use for them.

Are you doing OOT bags or no?  I ask cause I'm doing them, as cheap as possible, just brown Kraft bags, with some decoration on them,I have a pic if you want to see what I mean, and putting a Vegas Map in - Free, putting our itinery in them - free, water bottles-cheap, hand written note thanking each person for coming-free and then a personalized CD-pretty cheap - and two edible favors that are both $1 each.  I like the idea of having them in the bags so they don't have to take them back to their rooms from the reception, if they even remember to, and the bags are in the hotel room for them to eat the favors whenever or just bring them home.  My edible favors we are doing are in my bio.

Just a thought!  My opinion is edible is the way to go!

No OOT bags, most of my guests will be driving and frequent Vegas often so there would really be no need.

Direy- no not selfish at all! Sometimes I feel the same way but then I think myself into a craze!! :)

I still love the candy buffet idea, but my FI is so weird, when I gave him a stocking full of candy he could not stop eating, but offering candy to our guests?? No way! I think he just realizes that with his (moms) guest list we are spending more than we expected, and he is being the sensible one and saying that it is not a necessity.

For a destination wedding, shot glasses are not ideal.  Guests would probably leave them behind no one wants to carry that around while they party in Vegas after your wedding.

Edible favors are ideal.  I am doing a little tin of mints (easy to stick in your pocket and use).  I am also doing little photo frames as place cards for seating at our ballroom reception.  This serves as place cards and favors.  I realize some guests will leave the frames behind, because they don't want to carry it around-- but I still love the idea.

he candy buffet is your best bet-- if you can do it to fit your budget!

I vote for edible favors. You can get cheap candy with Las Vegas design on it. Freeds makes Vegas style cookies for things like this. Another poster also bought some casino chips for her guests.

Maybe you could give them a couple quarters for the slot machines and say hope you are as luck as we are!

I ditto everyone else. I think edible is the way to go. If I were a guest I porbably wouldnt take anything with me that wasn't edible. I don't think I would want to carry it around.

I think the candy buffet is a great idea. Who doesn't like a bag of candy to take back with them? :)

I did the shot glasses that were personalized there were none left behind at least at the reception. I have people ask me if they could have another so they could have two at home. But almost everyone came from California so idk..

    Candy is the best favor.
I would go out an buy a bunch of those little organza bags. Buy the personalized M&Ms in your colors.
    OR
I would buy those wrappers that you can put on a full sized candybar.

Either of those options should be able to keep your favors under a buck a person

I totally agree!!  Especially since this is destination wedding, people probably aren't going to want to cart back something.  I think if you just show them a good time, the rest will take care of itself :)

MIZLYNN--We have the same wedding dress!!!  It's gorgeous :)  Also, I am having my reception at Maggianos!  Happy Planning!

I was going to go for something edible but then I worked out that most people will still have to cart them around all night after the reception unless they return to their hotels to drop them off! I did not think this was a great option as I would personally hate to carry something around whilst visiting bars/clubs and would hate the cost of a cab just to return to my room to drop off something.

We have decided to give a poker chip to the casino where the reception will be. i figured it would be a good after dinner activity for us all to go down tot he casino floor and have a bet or two together.

Go to matrimonychips.com if you are interested in getting custom poker chips with your names and wedding dates. it's a cheap, cute route to go. It was one of my favors along with dice and such. You dont gotta do the whole vegas thing, but just an idea. I also recommend doing a mockup and not proceeding to order and then they might send you a coupon code to get a great deal on them in your email.
