fish centerpiece?

My fiance has a love for fish. its a huge part of his life so we decided to mix my love for roses and his love for fish for our centerpiece. our plan is to put a beta fish in all our centerpieces with a floating candle on top. the roses will be submurged in the water with the fish. Any one have any ideas how to do this without harming the fish? its pretty much a set plan but i just want to make sure we dont harm the fish. any ideas?

You know how not to harm the fish?  DON'T DO THIS.  Really.  Do a quick search for all the thousand other threads where people thought this was a good idea and you'll quickly see that it's not.

  • Fish are living creatures, not wedding decor.  You won't get any support for your idea here.  I know you think it sounds like a cute idea, but there are so many things you aren't considering.  I hope you will reconsider.
  • Is this a joke? This is like the third one this week?

  • Dead fish and dish poop do not make cute reception decor.

There isn't a way to do this without hurting the fish.

I was thinking the same thing.  This used to be such a huge fad, but I thought it died (along with many hundreds of fish) years ago.  What's with this new surge of people wanting to use live animals as decor??

As an aside... OP, don't do this.   Animals, even a goldfish or a beta, are not decoration.  If your fiance loves fish, make sure to take some engagement or wedding photos near a koi pond or something.   Don't put out live fish on your reception tables.
  • All of the above. Plus, I'm not a fan of fish.  I think they're kinda gross and I really don't want to be eating where I can see one.  I'd probably lose my appetite and be really grossed out by it, especially if it happens to die while I'm there.

If your FI loves fish so much, I'd think he'd already be familiar with how sensitive they are to their environments, and what a bad idea this is.
  • I think it's a cute idea, I dont know if you can do it with the candle though. I have seen vases where there is an inner and outer vase so you can put the flowers on the inside and the fish on the outside. Or you can put a smaller vase inside a big centerpiece so that theyr'e separate. As long as they're separate there's no harm in it. Just skip the candle and maybe put little votives around the it.
  • Live animals are not props.  We've already covered this topic this week.

What do you think about using kittens in centerpieces?

    Hahahhahahahahahhaha. Best TK post ever.
  • Sorry about the soda. I know that hurts ; )

  • I encourage you to pass on this idea.  There is really no way to execute this without risking the life of the fish.

Aside from the obvious animal safety issue, what happens if the fish dies during your wedding reception?  A belly up beta is NOT cute in your wedding photos...neither are those long strings of poop fish seem to always have.  Really appitizing for a guest, I'm sure.

  • This is a really bad idea and everyone has covered that.  Just for the sake of seeing the idea through - WHAT on earth would you do with all those beta fish if they all live?  Who is going to take them?  It isn't like someone can say - hey I have an aquarium, I'll take a couple of them.  Can't do that..

OP - please please please do not do this to living creatures and please do not make your guests look at fish poop and potentially dead fish during dinner.  This is a really bad idea.
  • Why not just get married in an aquarium?  That way you will have fish around (that are properly being taken care of by professionals) and then you can just use roses as your centerpieces.

But like all the other PP said, please do not use live animals in your centerpieces.

  • Ditto PPs. You can have fish in proper containers, like if your venue actually has fish tanks already or would be willing to accommodate you bringing in your own fish tanks and can provide someone to care for them. I would not use them as a centerpiece idea.

  • A friend of mine had goldfish as her centerpieces in 2005, they all lived, and they kept them all. Because she loves fish, and likes to have them as pets. However they kept the fish separate from the rest of the decor.

So perhaps set the bowl on a bed of roses, rather than submerging with roses. Surround with tea lights, rather than floating a light on top of the fish.

And remember, you now have a bunch of fish to see to after your wedding.

  • The thing to remember about Bettas (vs. goldfish) is that you can only have ONE in a tank if they are males, (which all the fancy decorative ones are, females are little and plain).  If left together, they fight, sometimes to the death or until one is so stressed that it end up dieing pretty soon.  Very horrible....

So even if you plan to take them home and love them as pets after the wedding, you'd end up with 6, or however many tables you have, seperate little tanks in your house!

    FTFY.

This is a horrible idea.  Why would anyone EVER want to do this to fish??  They are living animals....and this is a cruel idea.

I just had another thought actually, for those who like the idea of having something pretty and living on the tables:

It's like having a live animal centerpiece BUT IT'S NOT:

Cruelty free,  Robot Butterflies!  Cool, right?

They're battery operated. And pretty cheap.

(Oh dear, it's so realistic I actually feel sorry for it even though it is made of wire and thin plastic!)

OP:  I LOVE this idea!  Forget all the haters.  It can be done in a really good way.  I just searched the negatives as to why people have been such a downer to you,  but there are several sites that show the "right"  way to do it.  I never thought of this idea before and when I explained it to my fiance,  he loved it too,  as long as it is done in a way that won't be harmful to the fish.  Like I said,  search the "right"  ways to do it as there are plenty!  Thanks for the cool idea!  What a neat thing to share new life after your wedding by keeping the fish as pets and watching them grow,  as the way your marriage does.  I love this.   :)
