"type" of shower?

Hi ladies!

My mom's lovely and very generous friend has offered to throw me a shower this summer, and I've accepted! I'm getting together with her in a couple of weeks so we can figure out the exact date, and she asked me to think about what "type" of shower I'd like. I was pretty confused, so she explained that some people have theme showers, like all kitchen stuff, or an alphabet shower where everyone brings a gift beginning with a different letter, or a big gift shower in which all the guests pool money for one big gift. She asked me what I'd like most, and I honestly don't know. I feel a little weird requesting one type over the other (wouldn't it be rude to say "I really want you all to pool your money together and buy me x").

Does your shower have a theme or style? Did the host seek your input on types of gifts and that kind of thing?

Re: "type" of shower?

  • I've never heard of theme showers to be honest with you. Personally, I think it sounds a little weird. If someone asked this of me, I'd just tell them no theme. Just a regular bridal shower.

  • ive never heard of a themed shower.. so i went and Google'd it and i found stuff about themed showers, however it wasn't about the types you've mentioned...

it was about like a tea party or a beach theme... normal themed party things

I think theme showers are something from our parents' generation and aren't really that common anymore. I did have one hostess ask me if I wanted a theme shower and I told her no, just a regular shower would be good.

  • I have heard of this before, a friend of mine was telling me they do "themed" showers in her hometown, she is from a very small town. I had never heard of it before. She said they sometimes do appliance showers where everyone brings a giftcard to an appliance store, or a bath and kitchen shower so all th gifts are for the bathroom and kitchen... if you aren't comfortable with it, tell her you really appreciate her thoughtfulness but would be happy with whatever anyone wants to give you and there is no theme necessary. Hopefully she will get the hint. Good luck!

  • I've heard of them, specifically crystal showers, but I am not a fan.  I want to be able to buy whatever I want and can afford.  I'd just have a regular shower if I were you.

  • Like PPs said, I have heard of themes as in decorations and whatnot, but not as in what to buy. FSIL is having a Twilight themed shower, and FMIL is furious because she thinks thats childish and not appropriate for a wedding (can't help but actually agree with her there). I think telling people to pool money to buy you a BIG gift is ridiculous.
  • I'm having 2 showers, both themed :P
One is a Pampered Chef shower (for my family in my home town). My sister is a consultant and I LOVE PC (so does FI) so it's awesome. It
The other is a Honeymoon themed bridal shower (for my friends/family in the city); the decor/food/games will suit the theme. I have a HM gift registry set up but they will also have an inspiration board/list for HM related items to purchase (if they wish). It's just a fun way to make it different and ppl can still buy whatever they want; it just kinda gives them guidance in terms of what the couple/bride wants and/or needs. Plus, a HM themed shower can provide a plethora of "fun" gifts too ;)

  • I have never seen a "themed" shower per say, but I'd say our theme for my shower is very rustic and outdoorsy. Here's the pinterest board for it that my MOH put together:  http://pinterest.com/crlpinchuk/cassi-s-picnic/

I am so excited! She did such a great job!
  • The only one of these I've ever heard of is a lingerie shower.  And I figured that was kept exclusive for more intimate showers of only close friends.  Otherwise I thought they were all "regular" as far as gift giving goes.  I'd stick to a regular one so everyone knows what's going on haha
  • Thanks, ladies! I'm definitely just looking for a "normal" run-of-the-mill shower with my closest friends and relatives. :) I'll just tell my mom's friend that.
