fee for wedding officiant

we asked a retired judge to marry us. he never asked for a fee since he married my fiance's parents, but it wouldn't be fair of us to take him for granted. we are occupying his and his wife time for at least 5 hours (we're getting married on a lake cruise). I'd like opinions or ballpark ranges on how much we should "gift" to him for his time. thanks.

Our officiant is a Reverend and he is charging us $300, which includes 2 planning sessions, the rehearsal and the wedding.

Ours is $200 which includes the ceremony and rehearsal. I'd say no less then $100, but I think $200 would be fine.

I had an old timer pastor tell my mom that $200 was sufficiant if they didn't ask. Our pastor is refusing payment because as members of the church, it comes with membership. We are making a donation to the church instead.

the typical donation for a Rev. at our church is $150-$300.

wow...in BC Canada...if you have a justice of the peace, or officiant do it, they can only charge $75 + travel fuel...

Ours cost 350$, but that includes the rehearsal and several counseling sessions.

Mine is going to be less than $200 with travel (he's coming from an hour away) I'm planning on giving him about $300 or more though, as he has very reasonable prices and I feel bad that he has to travel back and forth for the rehearsal and the wedding.

my gosh that is alot...i'm using a judge and it's normally 100 but since he has to drive out of his way it's 150

Wow, I am using a Minister who is a regular customer at the restaurant my FH works at. He's a nice guy and said that he doesn't charge anything for weddings because he doesn't think that it is right to charge for that. He also requires that we meet with him at least 5-8 times before the wedding for pre-marital counseling (We are meeting with him every two weeks until October, so it will end up being way more than 8 times, we've already seen him 3 times). Based on other rates I got in the area ($100- $350) we are going to try and give him as much as we can, but it will probably be around $100.
