Sash for BM Dresses?

So our BMs are wearing this dress from jcrew factory:

We think it needs a sash, but we can't seem to find one we like.  Our colors are fuschia and lime.  We are looking for a simple ribbon sash in lime or white or a thin sparkly silver sash, and ideally we'd like to keep it around $20 or less.  Any suggestions for some great sashes at reasonable prices?

Re: Sash for BM Dresses?

  • My bridesmaids wore JCrew. They just used a 1.5 inch wide spool of ribbon in a color that "matched" the dress. We got it at our local craft store. Each cut off a length and we tied it around the back in a bow. Less than $20 total for all 5 bridesmaids

I tend to think women tend to look "blocky" with a noticeably different colored belt or sash around the waist. Try it with ribbon in different colors and see what you like. Take pictures and see how it photographs.
  • I was thinking about using ribbon from the craft store, but I was wondering how we could keep it from fraying.  Did you do anything special to seal off the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying?

We didn't...and TBH, I would never have noticed if it frayed.

But in the past I've used a bit of clear nail polish (or clear-drying glue) to seal off the ends.

Cut the ribbon to the length you need and simply fold up the bottoms of the ends of the ribbon (the cut part) just enough to allow you to sew it together.  This will prevent fraying.

Also, I would check out Joanns and see if they have Fray Block.  I think it is a type of clear fabric glue to prevent fraying.

Finally you could just cut the ribbon at an angle or in an inverted V to help prevent fraying.

  • Thank you for all the tips!
  • You could hem the ends or coat them with nail polish or purchase no-fray liquid at a craft or fabric store.
