How warm do you keep your home?

I am always cold; H is always warm.  During the times when we are awake and at home, we keep our thermostat set at 67 or 68 degrees F and I am always wearing a sweater and a blanket or two.

At what temp is your thermostat set?  Is that warm enough for you?  Too warm?  I am curious (yellow).

Re: How warm do you keep your home?

  • No central heating in our place (or most of Chile), so I can't answer. I'm pretty sure at my dad's it's usually 68/69ish though, and that combined with a sweatshirt and slippers is fine for me.

Sarah, you would do well in Chile. We bundle and suffer here too. And people like your FI drive me insane - I'm not saying you need to wear everything you own to keep warm and avoid using technology, but at least put a sweatshirt and long pants on and see if you really need to use energy or not.

Oh, he drives me insane, too. But we just got our first heating bill in this new apartment, and I think it has sobered him up a bit. When he came home from work this morning and went to bed, he actually put pajama pants on. I'm so proud. :)

  • We're like you guys - I'm always freezing and he's always hot.  During the day if we're home we set the heat at 68 but when we go to bed we up it to 70 or 72 depending on how cold it is outside.

  • The thermostat is set at 70. DH is comfy, but I am always in my fuzzy pants, sweatshirt and thick socks curled under a fleece blanket. It sounds really bad, but he's always hot and I'm always freezing and we don't need an outrageous heating bill, so I deal with it.

  • In the summer, 70-72, depending on how hot it is outside. In the winter, 73-75. I'm usually cold, Rick's like a human-furnace

Ha, yep, me too.  The sexiness is not to be believed.

We have a timer so the temp drops to 55F when we're not home and I think to 60F at night while we sleep.

  • We usually keep ours set at about 74 in the winter... we'll crank it up a bit during the night when it's buttasscold like it is right now. But we also have an apartment with gas/heat included in our rent. If we were paying for the gas, we'd probably keep it at around 70 and I'd just wear my Snuggie everywhere at home, rather than just while I'm lazing on the couch. :)

In the summer, we rarely turn on the A/C but when we do we keep it at about 70.

Haha, DH has been grouchy about my grungy-looking warm jammies lately. I tossed him a VS catalog and told him to stop bitching and start a revolution!

Maybe I'll get something cute and warm for Christmas :)
  • I am always cold, and at the house I grew up in the heat rose so downstairs was always freezing. Before the snuggie existed, I had a polar fleece one-piece that I would rock on the weekends in high school. My parents gave it to me for Christmas one year.
  • 65 or so.  Unless it's SUPER cold outside.  THen I'll crank it up to 70.  But if it's nice out 40F or warmer outside I'll leave it at 65-68 and put a sweater or blanet on.  I'm all about energy conservation and keeping the bills low.

  • Ours is set at 72, but we have good insulation and windows, so it doesn't cost much to keep it that way.  In my old apartment, I had electric baseboard radiators right below really shitty windows, so I was paying almost $300/month for heat and was still freezing.  It sucked.

  • We keep it at 68-70. H is usually not cold, I'm pretty much always cold. But this house we rent is old and drafty. Plus we just had furnace/thermostat problems, so now we actually have to set it 4 degrees above where we want it. Something is off. So if we want it 68, we set at 72. At night we keep the temp at about 58-60 degrees. I generally always have on long sleeves, sometimes a sweatshirt on top of that, long pants (usually yoga pants) and a blanket. Bonus when the cats curl up with me, more heat generated!

  • we have a pellet stove in our basement.  best thing ever.  i highly recommend them to anyone.

we set it at 85, which puts the upstairs at anywhere from 68-72, depending upon how cold it is outside.

we heat our entire house (ranch) all winter for less than $1000K.

when we had oil heat, we kept the thermostat at 66-68.
  • We keep it at 70ish when we're not home and I turn it up to 74 or so when I get home, and then we sleep with it at 71. Last year we slept with it at 68/69, but it's colder this year.

We're getting gas logs for Christmas, so we're about to not have to use the heat anymore.

Summer: 68 pretty much all the time.
  • I work from a home office and DH is often home during the day too so unfortunately we have to heat and cool day and night.

Winter: 70-72 during the day and 67 when we go to bed.

Summer: We were doing 72-74 during the day and 66 at bedtime. But we had to put it down to 66 HOURS before we wanted to go to bed to get the bedroom cool. So last summer we bought a separate portable AC to go into our bedroom at night and that's really helped with comfort and cost.
  • 66 or 67.  i am usually doing something and comfortable or on the couch with a blanket and comfortable.
  • We keep ours at 72 and there are times when that is not warm enough. We might push it to 74 today since the wind chill is 15 degrees below zero.
And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image
  • Dead thread probably, but I keep the thermostat upstairs set at 62 in the winter, 77 in the summer. Yes, I'm cheap. But, I keep the thermostat for my tile floor in the bathroom set to heat up to 82 for the time when I get up and shower.
  • My heater isn't working properly right now, so we've been using our fireplace nightly and throwing more stuff on it if we feel cold.  I have no idea what temperature it is in my house.  Depending on how many appliances are running and how big the fire it, I'm guessing less than 65F in our living room, cooler everywhere else?
  • We have been keeping it at 69. Neither one of us is home during the day, so it doesn't make sense to have it on any higher than that. We originally had it on 72, but even though I am usually cold, I would wake up so hot and stuffy in the middle of the night. And even wake up in the morning with a headache. So once we lowered the temp, both of us seem to be doing much better.
  • 68, day and night, summer and winter. I'm usually in a blanket and socks and warm somethings in the winter, J will have on shorts and be barefoot. Yesterday, he actually wore jeans. I was floored.

In the summer, the vent in the living room is closed; in the winter, the bedroom vent is closed. The 2 rooms we don't use are always closed.
