Also, how early is to early to send save the dates

I'm having a 'destination' wedding in New Orleans in February and none of our family/friends lives there. By word of mouth most know that it's in February and in NOLA and we want people to come.

That being said the hotel block discount 'expires' December 22nd (60 days before our wedding). . .when should I send the save the dates?

I was originally thinking September.. .but it seems SO far from the wedding

However, I don't want to run into Holiday stuff since folks will have to budget to make the wedding.

  • You can send save the dates 6-9 months in advance and wedding invitations usually go out at the 6-8 week mark.

New Orleans in February is event after event, in addition to being a popular month to visit anyway, so I highly doubt you are going to be able to negotiate a "normal" date (I.e. a month) for the hotel cut off in the desirable areas of the city, best case scenario you may get 6 weeks.  In fact, most local planners advise running your date past the Visitors and Convention Bureau to see what else is going on before booking things.

My NOLA friends who expect a lot of OOT guests have a wedding website with the hotel info and clearly note the cut off date, then include the website address at the bottom of the STDs and so people will have the info to book the hotel.  I typically receive STDs 6 months in advance of the wedding, so I think August-September would be fine.
  • Thanks everyone for your help. We already have the wedding website up and running so I'll plan to order the save the dates in July starting a new job in august with a September mailing date.

I don't particularly think you should worry about save the dates being too early. Since everyone will have to travel (and save up for it probably) it wouldn't be a bad idea to give an earlier heads up. I would think September would be the latest you would want to do save the dates!

Traveling to your wedding may very well be the equivalent of a "vacation" price-wise for some people. If i were in your situation I would send those out in the next couple months.
