WWED? Sending a gift when not invited.

A couple that FI & I know are getting married soon.  We've known the bride for nearly a decade and her FI possibly half that.  She was super supportive when FI & I opened our small business several years ago and helped us out quite a bit at the time.  We have mutual close friends and have hung out a few times this year, but aren't super close ourselves.

I was wanting to buy something small off of their registry I found on-line, but I don't want it to come across as fishing for an invitation or anything - I'm just genuinely excited and happy for them.

  • Ditto CMGr.  But if you are afraid that it will look like you are fishing for an invite, just send the gift the week they get married or directly afterwards.
  • I would send the gift after the wedding.

  • I agree with others. Send after wedding so they won't be in a position where they are worried they should add you to the list if you aren't already invited

Agree completely. I think sending a gift is a sweet gesture and doesn't imply that you're fishing for an invitation. But if I were the bride, I might worry that perhaps I should have made room for you on the guest list. To err on the side of caution (just to avoid possible anxiety for the bride), wait to send the gift until a point when the bride knows that you know you're not invited, such as one to two weeks before the wedding or right after.
