Photography

Ugh. I've been putting off writing papers, and looking at photographers. I have no idea what to look for in a package! I'm trying to stay pretty cheap, but I don't know what deals I'm getting.

So, for all you ladies that have your photographers, what does your package look like, and if you don't mind sharing, what was the cost?

I know cost is going to vary with location, I'm just curious!

Re: Photography

  • Our package includes 8 hours with 2 photographers, all images edited on a DVD with copyright release, 8 various sized prints, and a website for our guests. The only thing I don't like is that it does not include a proof book or photobook, but we were told its bc we get the DVD. THe cost is 2995 plus tax which i dont mind paying bc our photog is amazing, and its the going rate for the area anyhow, although most other photogs include a proofbook.
  • Here is one photog's package. I like her work, but are these good deals?

    The Babybird Package: $800
    6 hours of photography coverage
200 edited images on a DVD
full re-production rights to all 200 images
online photo gallery w/ password protection
    complimentary engagement shoot

    The Songbird Package: $1150
    8 hours of photography coverage
350 edited images on a DVD
full re-production rights to all 350 images
online photo gallery w/ password protection
    complimentary engagement shoot

    The Lovebirds Package: $1350
    8 hours of photography coverage
    2 photographers
500 edited images on a DVD
full re-production rights to all 500 images
online photo gallery w/ password protection
    complimentary engagement shoot

I'm thinking about the second package, but I'm not sure. What do you ladies think?

    Thats my package.
I'm paying around 200 more than that for travel fees.

It's a lot more than I wanted to spend, but that was honestly the first photographer I LOVED. Others I contacted were just sort of meh, but I loved this one. Even more after meeting with them.

I think the second package you posted would be okay, but might be worth it to get the second photographer in the third for just 200 more. If you have a large wedding party/family, it can make things run a lot smoother. One photographer can stay with the girls while one stays with the guys so they never really miss anything pre-wedding. Also, if you have a lot of guests, it will be more likely for you to get pictures of everyone there.

  • 8 hours of coverage, and we can add on that day for $100 extra an hour, post-production editing, online gallery, hi-res printable disc (she waives copyright or whatever, so we can print), $100 credit towards whatever else. An album, etc. $1500.

  • We're getting engagement photos, eight hours of wedding coverage, unlimited locations, all images retouched and placed onto a high resolution disk with permission to print, and online gallery for friends and family to view and order prints. This cost us $1120.

I think you'd be fine with the second option. But like PP said, if you have it to spare, $200 extra for a second photographer probably would be worth it.

  • our package cost $2500 and it includes our e-session with a cd of all the pictures and unlimited coverage of our wedding day with a cd of all the images. I will say, i didnt go with a photography company. I went with an independent photgrapher that works out of her house. I also looked at every single picture she has taken that is on her site and her blog and i really loved the way they looked. She takes amazing pictures and that is something that I wanted to say about my wedding pictures was wow that are awsome! Some packages offer more things for the price i got but I paid for the photographer that I wanted because i know i will get the pictures i want. =) HTH

  • I will say i dont know if i like the certain number of photos on the disc...i mean you might not like some of the ones she takes and you only get so many on a disc...and maybe its just me but i like pictures...i take them all the time so i like alot of pictures and 300 doesnt seem like alot to me...we had around 300 for our e-session and i probably only have 10 or so favorites...and maybe its just me....but i would want as many pictures as they are going to take..except the ones where your eyes are half closed or your mouth is full of food or something =)

Ours is $2400.  Husband & wife team.  10 hours of coverage.  Private Online Proof Gallery.  All edited Hi-res images on DVD.  $100 credit.

Our e-session was extra, $250.  1-2 locations.  All edited Hi-res images.  Guestbook.  $40 credit.

All albums are extra, which we liked.  A lot of the photographers we looked at had them included, but we're not sure what we really want, so we didn't want to pay for something we didn't want as part of a package.  I've seen photographers from $1000 to $10,000.  So I guess it depends on what your budget is and what all you want.

EDIT: we added cost to ours by having 2 photographers.  It was something I really wanted.  If we went with 1 photographer, we could have gotten a lot more bang for our buck.

  • I agree with littlepixie. The photographer putting a limited number of pictures on a disc seems very strange to me. I had around 200 photos just from my engagement session. I'm using the same photographer my sister had for her wedding, and she had at least 750 photos from the wedding. That would be a warning signal to me.
  • We will either buy her socond highest for $1599

She had really fair prices and I really like her and her work. Most of the prices for that kind of coverage were  around 2500 to 3000 in my area

  • Mine has all day coverage
    2 photographers
"Crazy Booth" aka a white background and tons of props for the sit down pictures
    1,500 credit for an album
    All photos retouched
     copyright release for all photos
    High-Resolution photos on the disc
    all for 4,500

  • Photography is the only thing we are really putting a decent (for us) amount of money towards. I found a "new" photographer (craigslist) in the area and this is what her package entails (SON OF A...I haven't booked her yet and just saw her prices went up. CRAP.):

    $550 + ~$50 for travel and $45 for taxes
    4 hours of coverage
    1 photographer
    Online private gallery
Image wrapped DVD with copyright release (all imaged in color & BW)
Coffee table book (40 pgs, 11x8.5 image wrapped book)
All imaged are color optimized and lightly air brushed

I shouldn't be complaining about $650, but I was thinking it would be closer to $500....bah.

  • There is nothing wrong with getting a limited number of photographs on a disc. If you love their work and know that they only hand pick the best of the best photographs then you shouldn't have a problem. Also the time it takes to edit images can become time consuming. So phtoshoping 200+ images can be no easy feat. Especially when the photographer has multiple clients wanting the same thing. Can you even imagine trying to sort through and edit/ enhance all those photographs?

This is what we are getting:

    the he $2800

    • SIX hours of continuous wedding day coverage
    • 2 photographers *
    • DVD *
    • Choose ONE portrait session:
® Engagement Session, ® Bridal Session, ® After Session (we are getting the engagement session)

    the nitty gritty
    * 2 photographers = Melanie Grizzel + an additional
    professional photographer
    * DVD = 500-600 digitally-enhanced, high-resolution,
    print-ready images
    * All portrait sessions include:
    - An environmental portrait at the location of your choice
    - online proofs for viewing and ordering for ONE YEAR

  • See, I was worried about the amount of images as well. It just doesn't seem like a lot. But then again, it kinda does. humph. I don't know what to do!!
  • Mine is $1400 because we took the e-pics out of the session (since FI's family friend was supposed to take them)

8 hours coverage with 2 photographers
Dvd of 500 Hi-Res images retouched and all that jazz
    Full copyright
    Online album for 90 days

  • I wouldn't be worried about the number of images on the disk. I don't think they mean "We are only going to take 200 images", it is probably more of a "We'll pick the best 200 out of your images". Trust me, that is a lot of photos! If you like their work and have had an opportunity to view at least one of their full wedding albums (they should have something like this for you to look at so you can see the variety/quality of images you can expect to receive. I'd look at more than one if it is available).

  • Considering my total wedding budget is only $2000, I knew I had to do something crazy for the photographer. I went on craigslist and found a student photographer from a nearby university who will do 5 hours of photography for $100. I do have to pay for her travel expenses and hotel if she needs one. She doesn't print the pictures, but she does retouch as many as I need (within reason) and then sends me an entire disc of photos that i can print myself. (i'm going to print from MPIX)

She takes awesome photos and she's cheap!  One major thing I wanted was a disc of photos that I could further retouch if I wanted to. I'm so excited about having her. I'm also going to have my aunt take some photos (she's not a pro either, but she's really good)

having a student photographer might not be fore everyone, but being a photographer myself, i know how important it is to build the portofolio - and I don't mind helping her do this.

I think it ended up $2,300. He upgraded our album to a really nice 12x12 one and gave us digital rights ($300 value) since he did my sister's wedding when he was just starting out and we really stressed we were on a budget.

  • Ours is 2,000.  It is his basic package, with all day coverage, all images in full resolution on disk, and he is traveling 2.5 hours for all but free (just compensating him for gas).  I am super excited, his work is wonderful.
  • We hired a friend of a friend who is starting a wedding photography business.  We're getting all day coverage and all of the photos and rights on a high res DVD.  She's charging us $500 and I couldn't be happier!  We won't get any prints or coffee table books but I'm totally OK with that.  Her work is awesome and I would honestly rather put a book together myself after the wedding.  Good luck finding a photographer!
