XP: Time off work for wedding?

Hi, all - I normally post on the Vegas board, but wanted to get your insights :)

I'm curious how much time everyone did or will take off work for their wedding.  I might ask for three weeks off, which is making me nervous.  I currently have over 5 weeks of vacation, I just feel awkward being gone that long (I work for a large retail company).  Granted, our timeline is like this:

Week 1: travel to FI's home country (Canada), spend a few days with his friends/family, host his going away party
Week 2: drive back to my home town (4 day drive with stops), unpack/settle in, do last minute wedding things
Week 3: wedding/honeymoon in Vegas, plus 2 days home to settle back in

Did anyone else take this much time off?  TIA :)

I'm taking the Friday before off and then two full weeks after (honeymoon.) So, 11 work days off.

If I had over 5 weeks of vacation, I'd be taking more time off too! :)

We work for our vacation and I'd say if you have the time, than take it off 3 weeks!  Your employer will manage without you while you're gone and will probably appreciate you more when you come back.  You've earned it and you deserve it!  Enjoy!

I think your request sounds more than fair given the amount of travel and other stuff you have to do.

Personally, I took the Thursday and Friday off before the wedding ton finish up last-minute stuff... the wedding was on Sunday... took Monday to relax/see family/pack for the honeymoon... spent Tuesday - Sunday in Mexico, arriving early the following Monday morning... and then went back to work on Tuesday. So, in total, 8 days of vacation spread out over essentially 3 work weeks.

If I hadn't been new to the company at the time, I would have probably asked for more time... but they were already making an exception to their 3-month waiting period for vacation... so I didn't push it ;-)

Thanks, ladies!!  I've never taken more than one week off work in my entire career (8 years).  I definitely want to take full advantage of the time and make sure I'm not adding extra stress by trying to be back at work the day after traveling.  (It always seems like there's so much to do after a trip - grocery shopping, laundry, etc.)

I'm sure my boss will understand, it's just not "normal" to take more than a week off at my (very large) company :)

That sounds reasonable to me- I am taking a little over 2 weeks off (the week before, and the week after, and then the Monday after that)

I figured having that much time away from work would be good for me anyways

I think your request is more than fair considering what all you're doing, and you earned it fair and square! As long as you're putting it in WAY in advance, I don't see a problem.

I had planned on taking a full week off before the wedding and two weeks off after (honeymoon Tuesday to Tuesday and use the rest of the week to put my life back together after the wedding craziness), but unfortunately that just couldn't happen. I'm taking Thursday and Friday off before the wedding, the full week after, and through Wednesday the last week. If I could take 3 weeks I'd be all over that!

Like PP, I think you're fine with taking three weeks off.  That's how long I'm going to take off - one week before the wedding and two weeks after the wedding for our honeymoon.

Wow I feel bad. I took four days off!! Three before wedding and the Monday after... We are going to wait to do our honeymoon. I wish I had taken more time to get the house back in order and get stuff cleaned up to sell though.

I am taking 18 days off (3 days driving to MN, 4 days to get ready for wedding, then a week to visit family & travel back home, & 3 days to be home). I think if you have that much time off TAKE IT!! You earned it.
