Engagement pictures--hair and makeup?

I'm preparing for our engagement picture session in a month and I'm trying to decide whether or not I should get my hair and makeup professionally done. I live out of state from where we're taking our pictures, so any salon that I'd go to would be a shot in the dark...I'm just afraid of having a bad hair day or something! What did you guys do?

Re: Engagement pictures--hair and makeup?

  • I had both done professionally.  It was a great way to "try out" the MUA I was considering as well and I ended up booking her for my wedding on the spot.
  • I did my own hair, but for makeup I went to a Sephora in the mall. If you buy a $50 gift card, they will do your makeup for free. I've since had it done again, and both times I was blown away by how good they were (2 different girls). I'm pretty sure MAC does the same thing.
  • I opted not to have them professionally done, but it was a definite gamble on the hair, especially since mine is EXTREMELY CURLY!  I just started using this new product called BB Cream from Garnier, and I used it for the Engagement session...it worked so well we hardly had to do any touch ups to my face!  You should check it out...super affordable and worth a shot rather than paying for a MUASmile

  • Just got my pictures done yesterday!  It was 95 degrees and humid, figures!  I got a haircut and highlights that afternoon (but let my hair airdry, as it's curly, so there's not a lot of styling that could be done).  Then went to MAC and had a makeover ($50 if you buy makeup).  The MUA did a fabulous job - I was so pleased.  I am curious to see how the pics come out, as I read later that they use mineral makeup with SPF, which doesn't look so hot with flash photography.  I'll find out next week when the pics come back!
  • sunshineinne I'm sure your pictures will be lovely!
  • I didn't get mine professionally done. I'm honestly glad I didn't because it was super windy the day we took our pics and any hairstyle I had paid for would have just gotten blown out anyway. I think if you like the way you do your own make-up, there's definitely no reason to get that professionally done. I might consider getting my hair done, but like I said, I didn't and I think it looked fine.

    Vacation
  • I did have my hair/makeup done by the same MUA who did my wedding. But then, we got rained out. We rescheduled for the next week & I didn’t have the money to pay for it all again, so I tried to recreate it myself. It came out pretty good, but was stressful. Of course, it wasn’t as good as when she did it. I do recommend getting it done by a pro.
  • I had the girl who does my nails do my makeup since I saw her a few hours before the pics were to be taken.  She is amazing at makeup and I was really happy with it.  I did not get my hair professionally done, I just straightened it and I was very happy with the way it looked in the pics.
  • I decided to get my make-up professionally done but not my hair. I was nervous I wouldnt like it so I just scheduled the appt early enough so I would have time to fix it if I didnt like it. In the end, it looked really great but unfortunately our pictures got canceled due to rain :( Our engagement pics are rescheduled in 2 weeks and Im still debating if Im going to spend the money to have my makeup done again.
