71?

Does anyone know what's the symbolic meaning behind the number 71?  One of my friends gave me a check for $71 as a wedding gift, and it seems like too random a number to not be some sort of tradition.  My friend is Punjabi.  Google has given me a bunch of random math stuff (my friend is not very math-y), and one obscure reference to the deity Indra living for 71 eons, but I'd love if someone could enlighten me more.

Re: 71?

  • Hmm.  The gift giver isn't a Christian, but that's a good idea.  Maybe he looked up Christian number symbolism when he chose his gift amount.  Thanks!

    Your welcome.

I was going to ask you if the giver was Christian. Your Catholic, right?

The second one talks about how the Anglican church is different from the Roman Catholic Church, etc.
  • Yes, I'm Catholic.
  • I know! He had $72 in his account :)

  • Just curious, did you have any other mutual friends with this person who gave $70?  They may have done it just to one-up someone.  My aunts and uncles all decided to give us the same amount in their cards, and they all gave $250, but the jokester aunt and uncle gave $251 just to give the most.  We did the same thing to friends of ours that got married a month after us.  We had already joked about giving them back their exact same gift, so when they gave us $200, we put $201 in their card.

  • No, no one gave $70.

I remember a post a few months ago about someone getting $18 from a guest, and someone else said that $18 has symbolic meaning in the Jewish tradition.  I was wondering if 71 had any special meaning, or is it just something my friend pulled out of the air (or symbolized how much spare money he had in the bank).
  • I was about to mention the multiples of 18 in gifts at a Jewish ceremony.

I'm no math expert, what is the base number or mulitple of
  • My first thought was that it was a multiple of 18, as that is customary in the Jewish tradition.  But my calculator told me that it is not a multiple of 18.  I am actually pretty sure that it's a prime number (but I could be wrong).

  • Maybe it's the highest prime number he could afford to give.

Someone on my club board, I think, said her grandmother sent her a check for $287 or something random like that. We figured it was what was in her account at the time.

the "weirdest" number I got was $160 in cash, and I figured it was because they had all 20s and no 10s. But everything ended in 0!

That was my first thought, too.

And, yeah, it's a prime number.

I hope you're kidding about needing a calculator to count by multiples of 18. Wow.

  • Perhaps it has something to do with Hindu Numerology. I've noticed that a lot of Asian cultures follow numerology. I used to work in a cell phone store and dealt with a lot of Asian clients (Indian, Chinese, Japanese, etc.). When I would assign them a new phone number, many would request (and even pay more for) a phone number with certain numbers that were lucky for them, or they would want to change phone numbers because they were unlucky for them. Perhaps your friend chose this amount because he was wishing you luck.

<div>Ummmmm...yeah, I did 71 divided by 18 in to my calculator.  I didn't realize that was a terrible thing to do.  It's not like 71 or 18 is a simple number like 2 or 5.</div>
