If you've really discussed marriage, the future, finances, kids, etc then be an adult about the ring.  Is he ready? Only you two know that.  Discuss it...budget, what you like, what he likes, etc.  Then he'll make the decision to get what he thinks would work for you.

You should start with a budget - how much is he willing to spend? Start there and discuss it with him. I wouldn't drop hints personally because I'd rather just talk to DH about things rather than try to be sneaky about it.

As far as picking out what you like I can't really help you there - just look at stuff and if you like it then bookmark it.

Also just because the two of you have started talking about marriage doesn't necessarily mean he's ready right now to get married

we've discussed everything and are totally compatible. as for being ready, i'm not expecting anything for another 6 months or so! and his taste sucks, he likes t-shirts and jeans. old t-shirts. i don't trust his style which is why i need to figure out what i want.
anyone have any advice on how to figure out what ring you want? all i know is i want it to be platinum and big!

thanks sapphire. i absolutely agree that we're not ready to get married yet. honestly, if he asked today, i'd say no. we need a little more time. but i hate being unprepared, so when he does ask me what i like, i don't want to say "i have no clue!" - god only knows what i'd get then!

Go look at stuff - DH and I picked my ring out together at a jewelry store

Also if those are your requirements it might take awhile for him to save up enough money to satisfy you

talk to him and find out how he wants to go about it. Does he want to pick it out by himself? If so, then maybe just tell him a few things you like/dont like (stone shapes, etc). If he is willing to have you give him more help-then go to some jewelry stores! You could go with him or just by yourself. Trust me, it helps SOO much to try a few on.
My bf and I are at a similar spot-starting talking engagement seriously. I went into some jewelry stores the others day (bf knew and said to go ahead). I kinda knew what I wanted, but I was surprised at some rings I would have thought I liked, that-as soon as I put it on my finger, I knew it wasnt for me!

So bring it up, find out what hes thinking...if he wants to do the picking out, but wants some input, Id recommend going to some jewelry stores together.

    Pretty sure you're a troll.

    In case you're not --

    Seriously?

You're making a horrible first impression.

You don't sound at all excited about your relationship or your BF.

You sound excited about something expensive and sparkly.

Go buy yourself a right hand ring.

I'd wait on the whole marriage thing until you have your priorities straight.

wow. thanks to the people who have actually tried to help. and for those of you judging, shame on you! i'm the only one in this relationship and it happens to be great. i love my boyfriend uncondtionally even though i wish he dressed better. what woman doesn't wish that something was different about her man? that he picks up his socks, or cuts his toenails over the toilet, or do the dishes. i came on here to ask for advice about finding a style of ring, not for people to judge my relationship or me. ps. i'd like it to be platinum and big because he can afford it. if it isn't, i'd still say yes...every girl has her dreams. stop crushing them!

Hey, I'm only going on what you write

You came here asking how to pick out a style and then you go to say that you just want it to big and platinum for no other reason than that he can afford it. In my mind that says you just want a big sparkly ring to show off to your friends - it could be hideous for all you care as long as it's big and sparkly and expensive.

Seriously, go try some on. What would you say your fashion asthetic is? Why do I keep ending sentences with dangling prepositions? If you find that you frequently wear things that most people would not, you are likely going to want something unique. If you like vintage then maybe he should look at estate sale rings. You need to know what you like too!

PS-- My FI is not the best dresser, but he did an amazing job with my ring. He really knows me, and knew that I wanted something a little different, but timeless at the same time. And in terms of size, that really depends on your hand size. I am frequently asked how I have a 2 carat diamond, it isn't I have small hands. You need to look at cut and shape on YOUR hands. And because it's pretty:

    In the box by itself

That just screams of greed. My FI could have given me a 10 dollar CZ ring and i would have said yes. We talked about budget , what i liked , what he pictured , and we went togetehr numerous times. Things i loved on paper looked hideous on me. Platinum is overrated in my opinion - not saying it's not worth it just get off the bus now. Bigger is not always better - especially on everyone's hand or budget. And just because your BF can afford it dosen't mean he should have to or even wants to spend that much. My FI wanted to spend 3x what he did but i told him it's just a symbol of our commitment , and i would rather put that towards our future together. We found something perfect , together , and he still surprised me with the proposal.

Stop making it about the ring , and more about the relationship and possible lifetime commitment it should be about.
