Wedding pies?

Has anyone ever done wedding pies or seen it done at a wedding? We are having a fall wedding and our thinking about doing pies instead of a traditonal cake. We are just trying to figure out the logistics. My venue said they would cut it but they thought that our guest might not think a piece of pie would be very pretty plated. I was thinking of having a table to display the pies and then after the "pie cutting" ceremony have the pies sliced and the guest go up and take the kind of pie that they want? I'm just not sure how that would work? Any advice?

Re: Wedding pies?

  • Hi! We are thinking about doing that too for our barn wedding. I think it gives guests a nice variety of different things and its unique! We originally wanted a fall wedding and thought of doing pies and cider donuts for something festive :)

  • I've seen reviews / posts in the past about brides using Achatz Handmade Pies in Ann Arbor.
  • We did wedding pies! We went through Achatz (though in Chesterfield).

We decided to do a 3 pie display (10''). We did a typical "cake cutting" at the display. We purchased large sheet pies of 4 different varieties. Our venue cut the pie and passed out some of each flavor to each table. It worked out great. Our guests loved it, especially having so many different types of pie (I think we ended up with Michigan 4-berry, French Silk, Florida Key Lime, and Raspberry Cream). We both hate cake so we loved it.

Achatz has lots of really pretty displays you can rent if you want more to display. Our venue had something available so we just used that.

The only thing I would consider (if you are using Achatz, and I would recommend them, they were fantastic) is that they are closed on Saturdays (Jewish company). Our wedding was on Saturday but thankfully our venue did not have a wedding on Friday and was able to keep them refridgerated for us.

We didn't get a picture of the 3 displayed together but here are a couple of us cutting and then the pie plated. Frankly I don't think anyone is going to care how it looks on a plate. As long as it tastes good people will be happy :)

  • We weren't allowed to do pies, cakes only. But we did a similiar idea with torte cakes. We had about 13 cakes on one table, each had a knife to cut their own piece. So we didn't have the staff serve the cake because we wanted people to be able to choose their own flavor since there were so many to choose from. We just made sure to put a lable next to the cakes so that people would avoid just taking a peice to "try out." Also- you should make sure that the serve yourself cake part is announced otherwise the guests may not know. Our cakes were all gone by the end of the night.
  • Thank you for your help. We have decided to go with pies! I'm so excited. I think we are renting the stands from Achatz. Acaponi87, your pictured really eased our fears of the pies slices looking nice. We are gonna go with the sheet pies in the back with a 4 pie 10 in decoration.

<div>I'm curious, <span style="font-size:11px;line-height:14px;">kmschwartzkopf. Who wouldn't "allow" you to have pies? Your venue? (What was their excuse?) Your parents?</span></div><div><span style="font-size:11px;line-height:14px;">
</span></div><div><span style="font-size:11px;line-height:14px;">Your cake solution sounds like it worked out well though.</span></div>
