Oh Great - Now What?

How come every time I come on here it's to share crappy news?

So, that dog-walking job at the animal inn I'm loving so much? Too good to be true. A week ago I was walking a beautiful golden retriever when she bolted on me - she must have seen a squirrel or a bird - and I wasn't prepared for her to run. When I gripped her leash as she pulled, I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder and back, then my arm went numb. Luckily, I was in enough pain that I wrote up a report so that they would have a written account of my injury.

Long story short, after 2 ER visits and one misdiagnosis, I have been diagnosed with a pinched nerve and neck strain. I am out of work until further notice and am being sent to see a spine specialist. Whether or not I am compensated has yet to be seen, but the good news is that the company is responsible for my medical care and prescriptions because it is a work-related injury.

Sweet, right? I finally land a job I love and I can't even go.

....How was your weekend?

Oh, Bside that sucks! I'm so sorry to hear that you got hurt and can't go to work. Is there a timeline when you might be able to go back?

Oh Bella, that stinks! I'm so sorry that you were injured and now can't go to work. Hopefully you will heal quickly and your work will be understanding. Thank goodness your expenses are covered!

That sucks! I've had a pinched nerve before and you know what worked like a charm? 3-4 days of laying on my couch medicated with painkillers and muscle relaxers. I get muscle spasms every once in awhile and that's the only thing that helps. I hope it all clears up soon!

Oh Bella, that sucks! I'm sorry you have to go through this. try to just rest, and relax. Maybe see if there is a message school you can go to for a cheap neck and shoulder rub, it might help with the strain. I hope you can get back to your job soon!

You guys are super sweet =) Thanks for the well-wishes. I'm sorry I keep dumping bad news on the boards. "One step forward, two steps back" seems to be the theme for the past year!

Hazel - no, there's no timeline. The doctor at the ER said she wanted me to see the spine specialist before making any decisions about going to work, because it is a neck injury and those can become quite serious. She said it probably isn't a surgical matter, though.

Liv - A little bit of both. I'm in a lot of pain, and what I do is so physical that it's impossible for me to work while in a sling - which I still wear because it takes the pressure off my neck. Also, they don't want me to risk working and hurting my neck even more.

tiger - they've perscribed me steroids and Percocet ;) They gave me the hard stuff when I told them that no over-the-counter pain killers were doing the trick (this is true - I tried everything from extra strength Tylenol to Aleve to Motrin and I'm still in constant pain).

That does suck!  But it is a work injury, so it should definitely be compensated.  I have bad arms because of a work injury. :(  But they did pay for all my medical expenses.  And then they gave me a check for loss of use as well... I'd rather have full functioning arms any ol' day of the week.

Hopefully this is just temporary and you'll be back at the job you love soon! :)

Aw B, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope that it is just a sprain and will go away with a little time and medicine. Also I'm proud of you for filling out the paperwork, because so many people don't and get stuck with huge bills. Hang in there!

Aw, Bella, I'm sorry.  Here's hoping that the pain goes away soon and that you get paid while you wait.

That sucks sorry to hear that! As someone who JUST went through a workmans comp claim - most states after you cannot work for 3 or 4  days straight - you can apply for temporary disability pay as long as you go through your employers claims adjuster. Every employer has to have it posted or given to you so I would advise asking about it and checking out your states webiste about their rules and regulations and forms regarding it. *hugs* Hope you feel better.

Sorry to hear that, Bella! Even after it heals, be careful. I had a pinched nerve in my shoulder (that's what I get for taking gymnastics at age 30) and if I'm not careful, it will still bother me from time to time. Nothing terrible, but I try to go easy on it.

    Oh poop. This sucks!

    I got you these:

Oh- and I second the TTD (temporary total disability) that tafft mentioned.
According to NJ- "If an injured worker is disabled for a period of more than seven days, he or she will be eligible to receive temporary total benefits at a rate of 70% their average weekly wage, not to exceed 75% of the Statewide Average Weekly Wage (SAWW) or fall below the minimum rate of 20% of the SAWW. These benefits are provided during the period when a worker is unable to work and is under active medical care."

Check out the website here- http://lwd.dol.state.nj.us/labor/wc/workers/benefits/benefit_index.html

That really sucks... I hope work pays you back.

You should try one of those warming neck pillows. BF got me one for stress. Its shaped like those neck pillows people wear on planes, but its filled with rice and herbs. (mine smells like lavender and chammomile)

The heat feels good on my muscles, not sure about how it does with nerve pain, but the smell is relaxing :)

Oh noes!!! Hope you feel better hunny. A coworker of FI's did the same thing last week playing basketball and will be out for awhile. It's a good thing they are paying for your bills though. I 2nd checking out what type of disability you can get for the time being, it sucks to lose that pay. I wish I would have filed for disability or something when I was off for a month. Until then, enjoy this time off and get better. It's summer, perfect time for no work :)
