Stupid question re: makeup

How did you "learn" to do your makeup?  Did your mom or older sister or someone teach you?  Or did you just play around and figure out what worked for you?

I'm completely useless with makeup.  The women in my family hardly wear any, so nobody ever gave me advice.  I never feel like I know what I should buy, or how to put it on without looking like a cheap hooker clown.  My daily routine is a bit of foundation, mascara, and chap-stick.  Sad.

With that, do you know any good blogs or websites to learn about makeup application? :)

My mom taught me a few basics, but mostly its just trying different things, plus some help from friends, makeup-counter ladies, and beauty magazines. Though beauty magazine advice seems to only have a 50/50 chance of being accurate!

The only beauty blog I follow is beautyaddict.blogspot.com. She only posts sporadically now, but there are HUGE archives full of great product reviews and recommendations. Not much help for techniques, but she links a lot of other blogs, so I imagine you could find something there.

I watched a lot of videos on youtube by these chicks:

Before I was allowed to wear make-up for purposes other than dance recitals, my Mom bought me books on how to apply make-up.  I think I have two from Kevyn Aucoin and one from Bobby Brown.  Those were very helpful and had step by step instructions on the basics of make-up application.  I highly recommend them.
I did watch a couple of youtube videos to learn how to do a smokey eye and I still don't think I have it exactly right. Posted by lovethebeach16
I can't do a smokey eye either! I invariably look like a racoon, though I'm beginning to think that's my face's fault (very round eyes, very bad dark circles).

btw, you look gorgeous in your wedding pics!

Actually I just saw this http://kevynaucoin.com/make_up.php. They archive make-up lessons from the books he wrote.  Hope these are helpful for you.

Sadly, it took me a really long time to learn anything other than stage makeup. I kind of experimented with toning down elements of stage makeup (specifically, the contouring on the eyes) until it looked good on me.

I did a lot of research before the wedding (before deciding to hire a pro), and found some really great tutorials on smashbox.com.

I'll check those out, too, Psy and Opal.  Thanks :)

I kind of played around with it till I found something I thought works. I always wear foundation and most days I wear a neutral eye shadow. I wear mac foundation, eye liner brushes and Merle Norman eye shadows.

My mom wears no makeup. So she's clueless. It's funny, but I recently realized that Seventeen magazine taught me how to do makeup, lol. I read it when I was a teenager and got all my tips from there... other than that I just experimented. I've heard that YouTube is a good resource.

Do you have a Sephora anywhere nearby?  I went there and had the makeup "specialist" teach me how to do makeup, complete with smoky eyes.

I studied and lived by Face Forward by Kevin Aucoin. Other than that, I learned from Cosmo and reading stuff online.

I'm currently learning too Kiki.  So far I've been adding in a new step every couple of weeks and going to the store and asking them how to apply it and what color I should get.  So far I've gotten concealer, mascara and eye liner.

<div>Ditto this, as well as just trial and error. I'm a big fan of Petrilude on youtube. His friend 'xsparkage' is more for teeny boppers, but it might be a good place to start if you are just learning. All the gurus on youtube use Mac and other expensive brands, but you can use cheaper stuff instead, no biggie.</div>

I'm bookmarking this thread because I suck at makeup. My mom still wears the same blue eyeshadow she wore in the 80s, so at least I knew not to follow in her footsteps. My fave eyeshadow comes with instructions, seriously.

    Thanks for asking, Kiki!
In high school, I just followed the diagrams that came with the products (mainly Maybelline and CoverGirl). I'm now using Bare Escentuals, and their introductory kit comes with a booklet as well as a DVD. The store does a makeover for you, too, so you see how much/little product you actually need. One thing I always thought was useless, but is actually an awesome product:  primer. Bare Escentuals has a good one, and so does Too Faced. Clinique's counter will also do a makeover for you, and I've liked their products.

    What does primer do?

I love primer!  It keeps your makeup on all day long, and it smooths and evens out your skin before the foundation goes on.  Smashbox does the best primer, in my opinion.

Sorry, had to go pick up my new car (!).  I like the suggestion of going to Sephora- I always feel all happy looking at the products in the store.  I only buy perfume there, but next time I go I will ask one of the specialists to help me out.

I'm so glad I'm not the only adult woman who has no idea how to do my makeup.  It's not a skill you're born with!

Too Faced's primer, Primed and Poreless I think is the name, is tinted a little and it literally makes your pores disappear. On occasion, just running errands, I 'd put just that on (it would also even out skin tone).

It's REALLY good if you're using powder/mineral makeup - it helps it "stick" to your face.

Bare Minerals primer is clear, but takes a lot less to cover. Basically, at the end of the workday, everything looks almost the same as when I left the house - very little fading.

And the easiest mascara I've ever found to apply is L'Oreal's Telescopic. It has a thin, skinny wand and you can reach all lashes with it and it extends them nicely. Good eye emphasis.

My sister taught me, but I still suck at it. So one day on my lunch break, I went to the MAC counter at Nordstrom and had someone give me a lesson. I still suck at eyeliner, so I just don't do it; I just don't wear make up very often. Too hot here in the summer. Foundation will slide off while I wait for the bus.

My mom always wore makeup daily, so I've been wearing it daily since I was in seventh grade.  I'm one of those people who refuses to go anywhere without some makeup on, concealer at the bare minimum. I also went to Mary Kay parties when I was younger and that helps a lot too!

Now a days, I've been really scouting to find the best products.  I try on a lot at Ulta and have just been trying to find what works best for me.

I am pretty sure I was born wearing a smoky eye!  I loooooove makeup and worked for Chanel Beaute' for 5 years.  I never had any professional training up until they hired me and of course I learned a lot from their training.  Most of my tricks came from just playing around with colors on myself all the time or trying to replicate pictures I liked in magazines.  When I started working with the professional artists I realized their taught techniques were things I was already doing on my own.

Practice makes perfect and you should just play around with colors on yourself first and eventually you'll notice what colors look best on you.  I always say that the key to a perfect, flawless face starts with your skin.  Take care of your skin, make sure you have a great foundation, powder and concealer that match your coloring perfectly.  After that, everything will look good.  I also do my eye makeup first and then I remove any eyeshadow particles that fall under my eyes with makeup remover.  I apply my foundation, powder, bronzer & concealer last.

Sephora is a good place to start, but to be honest I would look at going to a MAC counter.  Sephora folks are usually more salespeople than makeup artists, but MAC is all makeup artists, all the time.  Plus their stuff is really good.

My little brother's girlfriend is a MAC lady, and she not only did my makeup for my wedding but she's a fantastically talented makeup artist.  She's in the process of teaching me how to apply makeup.  Because I also am clueless.

I like the ideas of checking YT for vids.  When I was a kid my Mom took me to Merle Norman to get the basics.  Visited a few make up counters a long the way, too.  MAC was the latest, but due to "budgetary cutbacks" my make up comes from Walgreens these days.  :)

My ex-boyfriend's mom taught him how to apply makeup. Why he would need to know, I have no idea. She also made sure he had tampons in his apartment "just in case." I never understood their relatonship.

My mom might have taught me a few things, but not much. I learned mostly from trial and error and I still don't wear a ton of makeup. I have yet to find a lipstick shade that looks good on me. I alternate back and forth between two eyeshadows based on my outfit. I can't do a smokey eye to save my life. :(

ETA: I wish I could learn how to do more things with my eyeshadow. However, every time I try to do something dramatic I end up looking like I'm doing a throwback to the 80's or am trying to dress up like a street hooker.
