  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? After junior prom at my first boyfriend's house.  I was 16.

Did you ever get grounded? Yes.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: Spanking until I was like 4, and then I was sent to my room after that.  When I was a teenager, they took the phone away and gave me extra chores.

If you have children, will you do the same? I won't spank.  But sending to the room and extra chores REALLY did the trick.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? Actually it was in a back alley...haha, behind the school. I was 12.

Did you ever get grounded? Oh boy did I ever. I got grounded for looking at boys! lol

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: They spanked. With their hands, belts, hangers, and wooden spoons. Later in life, my mom used spanking as a threat of embarrassment to get me to behave.

When I was in middle school (11 or 12) my mom wanted us to take a picture with santa claus. I said no, because at that very instant the most popular girls in school were in the store right next to the santa booth. She then threatened to spank me right there in the mall. I had 2 bad options. Yeah...lucky me!

If you have children, will you do the same? It will be hard not spank, but nowadays, it's frowned upon. Aaron was also brought up with spanking. I don't think we're messed up so a little one here and there won't hurt anyone.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?
    A friends house, I was 14.

    Did you ever get grounded?
Yes, and they didn't play around.  They grounded me for months at a time, not weeks.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:
My parents were spankers.  They thought time outs were a joke.

If you have children, will you do the same?
No kids yet but we'll probably spank.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? In the kitchen of the church hall (we were setting up for an event my choir was putting on). I was 14.

Did you ever get grounded? No.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: When I was really little, I remember being sent to my room, and I know I was spanked a time or two. Once I was older, I behaved pretty well, and any punishment was usually just my parents telling me that I'd done something wrong and that they were upset/disappointed, which made me feel bad enough.

If you have children, will you do the same? Probably. I think that spanking can have its place as a last resort punishment - not the first thing we'd do if a kid messed up, but something that could be used as the "this is super serious, I'm not joking around" threat in extreme cases. And obviously I think there is a difference between a swat that stings a little and beating your child, and we would be opting for the former rather than the latter!
  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? At a friend's house. I was 13.

Did you ever get grounded? Only in extreme cases. I was a pretty good kid most of the time, I just had my off days - especially as a teenage girl. My mom would ground me and take away television.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: My mom's favorite punishment was to "walk the block". We lived in a neighborhood that was a big, mile-long circle, so if my siblings and I were having a huge fight, she would send one of us one direction and one the other to walk the block and cool off. She would also send us out to walk the block we were just being pains in the butt in general.

She laughs about it now because apparently she used to worry about what would happen when we would run into each other on the route. I think she expected us to have one of those cartoon, dust ball fights and then come home.

If you have children, will you do the same?Well, I don't think so, just because what are the chances of living in the perfect neighborhood to have that for a punishment? I'm a fan of time outs, privilege removal, etc. But I do think her method was effective because it got us to disengage from the situation and come back with a clear head.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?
    I honestly can't remember...obviously it wasn't that memorable :-p

    Did you ever get grounded?
I think once, but it was only for like a day.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:
When I was younger, I had to go stand in the corner or have time out.  When I was older, I got things like the phone and internet taken away.

If you have children, will you do the same?
    I'm not sure yet.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?  I was 14, hallway at school. I think I bit his lip...

Did you ever get grounded?  Temporarily, for a day or so. When I turned 18, my dad would take my keys/car if I missed curfew since the car was technically under his name.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:  When I was little, my dad would put me in the closet instead of hitting me as time out, for around 10 mins. When I was older, he'd take away my keys/car until I finally bought my own car under my name..

If you have children, will you do the same?  I don't have children but when I do, I would put them in time-out when they're little and will take away their most prized items (video games, cell phone, etc) when they're older.
  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?  basement.  16

Did you ever get grounded? no.  My mother didn't like how much time I spent in my room, so grounding didn't make much sense.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:
spanking when I was little and occassionally time out.  Once I wasn't allowed to watch tv until I apologized for something.  When I was older my mother threatened to fine me if I didn't come out of my room.
If you have children, will you do the same? We're not planning on children.  Dogs are better.  Noopy gets a 2 minute time out in his crate if he barks at the guinea pigs.

Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?  I was 13 and it was in my parent's kitchen! (My first real bf)

Did you ever get grounded? Not really.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: I think my parents really struggled with discipline...they didn't really have a set form of punishment. I do remember getting the soap in the mouth for talking back when I was like 5, though!

If you have children, will you do the same? DH and I plan to have a firm disciplinary style - plenty of positive reinforcement but our kids will know what's expected of them and will have boundaries in place. I also believe consequences should be in place swiftly and should be directly related to the offense to make it hit home more for kids.
I also believe in setting kids up for success, not failure, so part of this obvs rests on me and DH as well. But for the inevitable rule breaking, we'll be firm but fair.

Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? At a classmate's birthday party during a game of truth or dare, I was 12.

Did you ever get grounded? I can't remember ever getting grounded, I never did anything that would warrant that :-P

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain> I remember only getting spanked once. My parents would mostly just take things away or tell my sister and I that we couldn't go out somewhere.

If you have children, will you do the same?  I think so. My parents really weren't all that strict and they let my sister and I watch a lot of the movies/tv shows that our friends' parents wouldn't let our friends watch.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?  In a truck.  I think I was 16 or 17.

Did you ever get grounded?  No.  My brother and I were pretty lame growing up.  We spent most of our time working, going to school, or at school related activities (band, cheerleading, etc) so my mom never really had anything to ground us from.  Plus, we never really did anything to warrant grounding.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: When we were little, a light spank followed by time out.  Time out is VERY effective if done properly and consistently.  I hated time out more than anything...it was so boring.

When we got older, our mom would just tell us to go to our rooms, but half the time we'd already be on the way there anyway since we knew when we needed time to cool down.

My mom never took our cars away because then she would have to drive us to/from work, school activities, etc, and she worked full time so it seemed like more of a punishment to her than to us.

If you have children, will you do the same?  Probably.  H was also raised in a spanking family.  I don't believe in beating your children, but a light spank followed by a boring time out is fine with me.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?
I think it was 7th grade, so 13 or so (or however old you are in 7th grade). It was at a movie theater.

    Did you ever get grounded?
Oh yeah. I was known for sass and backtalk. It got me grounded quite a few times.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:
Spanking for awhile, but I must have a hard butt because it never hurt me, but it sis hurt my mom's hand. So then she tried tobasco sauce on the tongue every time I cussed at her or talked back. But I got immune to that too and would just stick my tongue out at her. Finally she just sent me to my room, where I had all my stuff to play with anyway.

If you have children, will you do the same?
I won't be having kids, but yes I would do the same.
  • First kiss? I was 16 because I had just started driving alone and went over to my BF's house where the kiss took place.

Get grounded? Oh yes, my teenage years were mostly spent grounded. Not that I did anything to get there but my mom was crazy and didn't allow me to go out of the house and be away from her. Not so smart on her part because when I finally got out of the house I would do anything and everything that was bad. When I finally went to college I went crazy...I'm surprised i'm still alive (not joking).

Way of punishment? Spanking with hand, belt, or 'switch' until I was in high school. I would be smacked in the face or on the head randomly after I hit high school. Sometimes I would get punched but that was only after a fight had been started.

If I have children will I do the same? Hopefully i'm unable to have kids. If I do, I will spank but I won't take it to the extremes like my parents took it. For instance, I won't stand behind my daughter as she is trying to ignore my taunts and hit her in the head repeatedly to start a fight. When she does try to fight back or walk away I wouldn't punch her and tell her i'm going to end her life.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?
At the skating rink. In a game of "suck-n-blow". I was 15.  Yeah, way cool.

    Did you ever get grounded?
    All the time!

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:
Spanking when I was a kid, then taking things away when I was in HS.  At first it was things like my vehicle.  Then they realized they would still have to drive me to ALL my school stuff, so they then would take away the phone and ground me.  I always had a backup phone though and they never knew about it.  I would just plug that one in and make sure to talk after hours.

If you have children, will you do the same?
I will spank some, nothing like beating though. And grounding/taking things away.  Living out here in the boonies makes it hard for taking the vehicle away, but strict curfews will help I think.

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you?  Outside the AMC.  I was 16.

Did you ever get grounded?  A lot.  I'd just go up to my room and read.  Anything longer than a couple of hours and my mom would forget.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain:  Spanking

If you have children, will you do the same?  Probably.  I think DH will favor a more psychological form, though; he jokes about getting a picture frame that comes with a picture of a kid.  Then if our child is ever really bad, DH will warn him that he'll end up just like his brother.  Then when the kid says, "I don't have a brother," we'll show him the picture.

I'm not sure that he'd actually do something like that, but I think the kid would be pretty well-behaved after that!

  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? in my then-boyfriend's sister's room...we were 15 :)

Did you ever get grounded? My mom tried, but it's really hard to ground someone who spends the weekends on the other side of the city and when my mom worked a million hours a week and wasn't home much...

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: I got spanked maybe twice ever, they were serious indiscretions...most of the time my mom would just yell and guilt me...

If you have children, will you do the same? I use time-outs or taking privileges from my daughter, although it doesn't always work...and my son is really too young for disciplining past saying no...
  • I am surprised how many of us were spanked. However, I think the kids of today are less likely to grow up the same way.

Which is a shame, because we were actually quite well-behaved.  I say I was grounded a lot, but that was mainly because I was always in trouble for having a messy room.  My mom talks about how she used to get compliments all the time for having such well-behaved kids, because we all knew that as soon as she pulled out Scary Mommy Voice (you know, the low, gritted-teeth one) that we were going to be in deep shiit when we got home, and we'd shape up immediately.

  • My parents can be proud that they had well behaved kids. They were strict to an extent, and they nipped all our bratty tendencies in the butt when we were little....for instance, it drives me batty when a couple lets their kids run around a restaurant like it's a playground. My parents would NEVER let us do that. And if we started crying at a restaurant, they'd tell us to stop or we'd leave. If we didn't stop, guess what? We left. We learned real fast that crying for what you want doesn't get you anywhere.

See, I think that's the biggest problem: parents who make threats and then don't follow through.  Kids can figure out REAL quick when you mean business and when they can just do what they want anyway.  I saw a mom at the grocery store the other day who said, "We're leaving," and the kid was still dithering in the store.  (Older kid, maybe 12 or so.)  So she turned around and left.  It was all I could do not to applaud.

I can see us being strict with them as younger kids, then morphing into permissive hippie parents once they hit puberty.  Because the only way to rebel against permissive hippie parents is to be a total square.  :D

  • I feel like my parents were pretty relaxed as long as things were within the limits of what was ok, but they were very clear about where the line between ok and not ok was and made it clear that not ok had consequences. I think that's a great way to end up with both good behavior and a good relationship with your kids because 99% of the time, my parents were focused on having fun with me instead of doing constant little disciplinary actions for dumb things. I hope to do the same with my kids.
  • Where did your first kiss take place? How old were you? In my backyard after seeing The Mummy.  I was 13, I think.

Did you ever get grounded? Maybe once or twice.  Never for more than a day.

What was your parents' way of punishment? Spanking? Time out? explain: When I was little I was spanked.  I was actually a pretty good kid, so after about 5 or 6, I didn't get punished too much (at least that I can remember).  My parents would just let me go if I was crying about something, or tell me how upset and disappointed they were in me.

If you have children, will you do the same? Probably.  I don't have a problem with a swat here and there when you really mean it.  I also don't plan on taking crap from my kids.  I worked in retail for a while, and I saw plenty of moms who needed to step up the discipline, and I am determined to not be that person.

That would be because every kid nowadays knows that "Oh, if Mommy or Daddy spank me, I can call CYS..." and gauging from the way alot of kids around my area act, their parents don't really do much, and they have no respect for anyone, including themselves...which is one reason why we've got "Teen Mom" and such...some parents just don't teach their children! (Now, granted, I'm not going to say that kids don't make those choices on their own, but some of them don't know any better...)
All things considered, I was actually a pretty good kid...
  • Oh god, I remember one time when my mom was really angry at me and "shoved" me and I happened to hit the wall. And no, it wasn't hard at all....but I remember I was about 15 or 16 and my best friends who hated HER parents was all "Oooh, we should totally call Child Protection Services." I never did because I would have been afraid of what would have happened after that.
