black tie optional vent

If one more person asks what the preferred attire is, and i say well its black tie optional, and they respond with but my husband/ boyfriend/ I don't have a black tie, I'm going to throw a fit. I even got asked, "But your fiance is wearing a red tie. Why do i have to wear black?"  AHHHHH!!!!

Re: black tie optional vent

  • I'm sorry to say it, but by asking for "Black Tie Optional," you've invited these types of issues.

"Black Tie Optional" isn't a dress code. It's an infuriating cop-out that stresses out guests. It's as if the hosts are afraid of not requesting a dress code out of fear of the guests showing up in polo shirts, but don't want to exclude people who don't own black tie attire, so they say "Black Tie Optional."

You've further complicated matters by not adhering to black tie attire yourselves. You've stated that your Groom is wearing a red tie. That kicks him out of black tie attire...which requires....yes...black ties.

Can you see why your guests may be confused? Events should either be Black Tie or not.

  • Just tell them when the ask that they can wear whatever they want.  Because they can.
  • Remember, every wedding is black tie optional unless black tie is forbidden.

If your FI isn't wearing black tie, then your wedding is not black tie. I see your wedding isn't until June so please don't put this on your invitation. If you want your guests to dress super fancy, sent out super fancy invitations and hold your ceremony after 6pm. That should do it.

</div><div>It really should be stickied. So many people don't understand what they're getting themselves into when they start talking about tuxedos.</div><div>
</div><div>Of course, hoping that people will read the sticky is wishful thinking...</div><div>
</div><div>Until then, I'll carry on my crusade to sound like a broken record on these forums.
