Menu Choices on response cards?

So I've read that people think that having a menu choice, i.e. steak or chicken is tacky to put on a response card, however my vendor needs to know for our sit down dinner. She even went as far as to suggest that we put somethimg to the effect of:
Mr. Jones   __steak                    Mrs. Jones     ___steak
                                 __chicken                                        ___chicken

Help! Also if I'm giving a meal choice do I have to provide a small menu description as an insert in the invitation?

Re: Menu Choices on response cards?

  • I provided 3 entree selections on my response card, I don't think there was anything tacky about it ... I even went so far as to personalize the line with the invited guest names ...

  • I don't find it tacky. Some venues need a count in advance, so putting it on the rsvp card makes sense. We had tableside ordering, otherwise I'm sure we would have done this.

My only advice - listing only chicken and steak is not specific enough. They can be prepared many ways. For example - beef tenderloin? I'm in. Beef wellington? No way.
Same thing with the chicken. A brief description would be super helpful.

  • Its not tacky, in fact, the lady we are working with for our reception suggested we do it. We are doing a sit-down dinner as well.  We were as specific as we could be in that little space. We, too, have to give a final count 2 wks prior so we can put the appropriate amount of money down.
  • Not tacky! I had four choices and did something like this (dont have them in front of me right now)

Please indicated number of guests per selection:
    ___ chicken ___steak
    ____ fish___ eggplant

  • oh! Gotta add - very as specific as possible with the meals. Like another poster pointed out. Listing "chicken" isn't going to go with people. "Chicken marsala" or whatever, is the best way to go.

  • I honestly don't think I've ever been to a wedding where I DIDN'T pick my food choice on the response card - unless of course if it was a buffet or there was only one food choice.

  • Some places offer table-side ordering, so some people may view choosing a meal ahead of time as tacky.

  • The most formal reception offers "French Service" where the waitstaff takes your order table side.  However, it's not feasible or affordable for some.  So, it immediately tells your guests that it's not a black tie affair, if you have a menu selection on the RSVP card, but it isn't tacky.  Just one step down on the formality ladder.

We did it, and I needed to know by name so that I could coordinate escort cards.  Photos in my bio under paper, and screenshots/templates in the templates section.

  • I have the two meal choices on our RSVP. I had them "initial" their choice so I could get a sense of who's having what, but our venue just needs a head count of how many of each and they double check during the reception what people want, and understand that the choice may change last minute so they take that into account.
