Adding Straps to a straplless gown?

Have you seen this done before?  If so, where did you get ideas and where do you get the fabric?

    Sure all the time.

Can you post a picture of your dress?

You could purchase something like this from David's Bridal

Here is the dress.  I love it strapless, but I am always tugging on the dress AND my husband HATES strapless (this is for a vow renewal):

If you're tugging on it, then it doesn't fit.

    Straps won't help, necessarily.

I'd suggest going to a seamstress and having it altered.

This.  Fit is your main problem and the reason for you tugging on it.  When a dress is altered correctly and fitted to your body you shouldn't feel the need to tug on it at all.

Also, to be honest, I don't think straps would work well with your dress.

  • A good seamstress will be able to fix the fit problem and give you advice about straps.

  • I have to agree that straps would probably not be ideal for this dress. Fit is definitely the issue and once someone alters it, then you shouldn't have an issue with it needing to be moved all night.
  • Agree with PPs that you must get the dress fitted properly before you do anything else to it.  However, I disagree with the PPs who said that you wouldn't be able to add straps to that dress style. In my case, I had a sweetheart neckline on my strapless dress and added a halter to it because, while I loved the sweetheart look, the gap between the top of my gown and my chin was so bare, it needed something and I didn't want to wear a lot of jewelry. The gown was altered perfectly for my body so I would never have had to tug at it if I had left it strapless, but I loved how it turned out with a halter strap anchored well away from the center so as not to impact the sweetheart look. Here are before and after photos:

My seamstress made the halter strap with fabric from the bottom of the dress since i had it shortened also.
  • I think the only strap that would work would be a halter strap. But, I agree with everyone else.  If you are tugging on it, you need to get it altered correctly.
