AWing one whiny little baby chicken

Hi all.  Thought I'd post a pic of the most recent hatch we had.  Only one egg out of the ten ended up being fertile, but he made it to hatch.  Man he's a whiner though, constant peeping!

  • How adorable!  What breed is that?  All the chicks I have had were the white fluffy ones.

  • Correction - not that your little cutie isn't fluffy, but I mean the typical mental image that the word "chick" conjures up.

  • Thanks everyone! I'll let him know people think he's cute :p. He's a Cuckoo Marans. He'll grow up to have black and white stripes like a prison uniform. Jailbird!

  • Kristan just officially named him Oreo.  We went out and got him a girlfriend at the local feedstore, so now he's too busy cuddling her to be loud and whiny.  Whew!

  • aw...but babies are fun.

You have me very intrigued by chickens right now. FI said "Fine, you take care of them" last night. So I'm thinking about it. But I def. don't know anyone here yet to watch them if we go away. .. I was thinking of getting 2.

Wait, you called this one a boy. Are there boy chickens? I thought the boys were roosters.

So cute! I went and saw my dad's chicks when they were at that awkward stage between fuzz and feathers. They were so ugly, but I couldn't stop staring because they were oddly cute. Edit: because autocorrect is awful

Damn those awkward, ugly, rich chickens!

What do you do with ducks when you raise them? Are you supposed to eat them? They are advertised at Tractor supply this weekend too. I love the idea of ducks, but I'm not sure I get the point and I don't want to eat my new friend eventually.

You can actually get ducks for eggs too. I don't like how they taste fried, but they make some freakin amazing scrambled eggs! You have to get a laying breed though.

Lol I didn't even know about the soccer guy, actually. I picked it from Hawaiian mythology. Their goddess of fire and volcanos is a fiery redhead named Pele. Almost every story she's in involvesher getting pissed off, destroying a village or two, calming down when she notices a hot cheiftan's son, seducing him, marrying him, then walking out after they have a kickin wedding night. Sounds like the good life ti me!

</div><div>Hahaha!  I just admire the mythology.  I think if I was asked to come up with a goddess, that's pretty much what I'd make up.  I've had variations of screen names with Pele in it since I was 20.  </div><div>
</div><div>But hey, this soccer guy looks pretty badass too, now that I'm reading about him!</div>

Oreo is a great name. What an adorable little chick :] That post made me smile and "awww" pretty hard.
  • They are way too cute! He literally looks like he's holding onto her. This makes me so excited for when me and FH have a yard big enough to get our own chickens.
  • So this chick will become a rooster? or are there male chickens that arent roosters?
