Vera Wang "Black" Collection for "Big" Guys?

I am in love with the Vera Wang Black Collection grey tuxedos from Men's Wearhouse.  However, the woman at the store told me that this particular tux is a slim-fit, ala Daniel Craig's suits in the most recent Bond flicks.

The problem is that several of the guys in the wedding party are big boys...300-325 pounds.  I am worried #1 that they won't be comfortable in the slim fit style, and #2 that it won't look right on them.  My hope is that as long as they are the right size that they will be accomodating for the fellas, but there is no way for them to try the style on before we commit!

Has anyone chosen the "Black" collection tux and had larger guys in their wedding party?  What did you think?

  • Have you asked the gentlemen about price point for the tux? You should have their comfort in mind above all else.

  • My DH has the opposite problem- he's very tall and super-skinny.  Men's Wearhouse does not carry his size.  We found this out by going to Men's Wearhouse and asking to try on a bunch of different sized tux jackets.  To get anything in extra-long, we had to go up two whole sizes from what he wears, and the jackets hung on him like a kid wearing his dad's clothes.

All by way of saying, can you take one of the groomsmen to a MW and see if they can try on some samples?  You can see if the jackets fit appropriately or not.  I don't see why MW wouldn't let you do that- we certainly didn't have a problem.

All that said, tuxes really should be black; if you're set on grey, I really recommend grey suits instead.
  • We are going with the Vera Wang Black Collection for our guys but in black. They told me at the store that they have a regular fit and a slim fit option for that tux. We mostly chose this tux becasue my FI is very tall and slim and the "slim fit" fit him very nicely. The regular fit  option in the vera is not as slim , but more tailored, so if you're "bigger" guys get their correct size then they will look fine. We also have a few bigger guys in the party and they are happy with the tux choice.

I may be against the curve, but I think grey tux's are fine. Good Luck!

  • Thank you everyone.  I personally think the grey looks schnazzy and if it makes everyone feel better, since the apparel I am talking about looks like a "suit" I will call it a "suit" ;)

Let the guys have an opinion. If it's "slim fit" the 300 pound guys might not be comfortable regardless of size. My 6'5" groom went to Men's Wearhouse without me and picked a tux that he was comfortable in and that all of his guys agreed on. He brought a picture in his iphone of my sister in her bridesmaid dress, so that they could coordinate.  Let the guys be comfortable, pick their own price point and don't be so picky about a color scheme.
  • We went with the black version of the Vera Wang tux for our guys (although we did consider the grey). One of the GMs is a bit bigger, about 6'1" with "more around the middle than Coach T would be happy about" (his wording about his old football coach lol) and the regular cut fit him fine. FBIL got the slim fit because he's smaller, and that worked nicely.

Can I ask a question about the grey tuxes? Why does it matter? I understand following etiquette and tradition when something is rude, but I don't think this falls into that category. Sure, they might regret it later, which is perfectly valid advice, but people are treating it like it's some sort of crime! Am I missing something, or is it really just "not how it's done?"

I think it's more that you can't call it a tux if its not black.

Beyond that, unless your wedding is following debutant like standards, this is a matter of personal preference. However, there's a reason the classic black and white has been around for years the look is timeless.

Ahh I see, thanks Banana! The grey tuxes really do look more like suits to me, and it would be MUCH less expensive for groomsmen to wear a grey suit if that's the look a bride wants. Choosing the grey tux because it looks like a suit even though it costs way more would make me upset if I had to pay for it.

  • I had fallen in love with the vera wang in charcoal. I could care less about whether it's a tux or a suit. The grey looked really smart with the dark purple I had chosen (David's Bridal Regency) I hadn't even realized they were vera wang. I don't follow any sort of fashion thing.

My fiancee is a big guy with broad shoulders. We were told that this particular cut was the best option for him because of that.

I'm not sure what prices are in the states but at Moore's in Canada it was around $200 for the rental plus tax and pocket square after a $40 off coupon. When it can to rentals they had the charcoal vera wang and a light grey calvin klein that was about $40 cheaper. In my mind that is way too much to ask them to spend on something they cannot keep. I thought about suits so that I chould get the right colour but once you get everything you need you might as well have gotten the vera wang.

We opted for the much cheaper and tradittional black to save our guys the exspense.
  • The whole grey versus black tux thing confuses me too because like stage said the grey tuxes have several differences from grey suits.

Be careful though with the Mens warehouse sales people they will tell you whatever they think they need to to get you to spend the most money, ie the Vera Wang tuxes.

When FI and his best man went in to pick out tuxes the sales lady told us the Vera Wang would be perfect because theyre both 5'11" and pretty slim and those were the most slim fitting tuxes they had so they went with it. FIL then went in a couple weeks ago on his own to get his tux reserved and hes the same height but a much bigger guy carrying most of his weight in his stomach and the sales lady told him that the Vera Wang would also be perfect for him because of the cut. Not really possible for the same tux to be perfect for slim fit and a larger fit and from going wiht my dad who isnt as large but still not slim I know that other tuxes were better choices for non-slim fit.
