Teen's revealing, "artistic" portrait is rejected for yearbook publication

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45925416/ns/today-today_people/t/teen-revealing-yearbook-photo-flap-its-artistic/

Just curious what you all think.

CN - This teenage girl submitted a rather racy photo for the yearbook and it was denied publication, so she was told to submit another.  That one, too, was deemed too racy.  She's upset because the photos are "artistic" and show who she "really is," blah blah blah, legal action, blah blah blah.

Here's what I think - I'm with the school on this one.  She's not even wearing a shirt in the first photo and the second picture she submitted - while she's in a dress - she's posed rather provactively.  FFS, this is a high school yearbook.  You are not a model and this is not Vogue.

Now you go.

  • My high school did generic photos for this very reason.  You could not even take your own to have put in the yearbook.
  • I agree with the school. My high school would have laughed in my face if I'd submitted these pictures. In fact, our pictures were taken by a photographer the school had contracted out for us, so our clothing and poses were basically decided for us. We even had to have our prom gowns approved before prom.

Also, my parents would have never allowed me to dress like that whether or not my picture was being taken. I don't see anything artistic about these photos. They're more like glamour shots. Senior photos should be sophisticated and professional looking.

  • I'm sure she's thrilled her photos were rejected.  How else was she going to go from wannabe teen model to the Today show?

  • I guess my only question is according to the interview I saw this morning, she can pay for ad space and use the picture..300 bucks..so they don't care if its in the yearbook..but she has to pay to use the photo she wants. I don't get that.

  • This was on the local news too. I am with the school. One article I read said the editors of the yearbook rejected it. I would reject it if I was the yearbook editor, faculty sponsor or principal. It is not school appropriate.
  • My cousin posted this on her FB, agreeing with the girl. She said she thinks the girl is adorable and is just expressing herself as someone who is interested in high-end fashion.

Um, NO. I'm sorry, even if you 18, I don't think  you should be allowed to put provactive pictures of yourself in a yearbook. I also don't think this is high fashion whatsoever. A scarf and nothing else? NO. no. no.

I don't know how her parents could be on board with this.

  • I'm with the school. We could use our own photos, but they had to meet a certain standard, or we could use the school's photographer.
  • I saw this story over the weekend. I definitely agree with the school. If its against the dress code, it should be allowed in the yearbook. We were able to pick our own senior picture but we still had to follow the rules and the dress code.

I saw this. I side with the school, but the yearbook staff sounds like they're being more than lenient with her- they told her she could put the racy photos in her "senior ad", so they'd still be published if she wanted them to be (she'd just have to pay, if it's anything like my high school).

I, too, side-eye the mom for letting her do that. I would have been sent straight back to my room to change.

ETA: Also, that last statement applies even tho she's 18. She's still in HIGH SCHOOL. Yeesh.

As far as I understand the yearbook editors allowed her to buy ad space where all the other kids and families buy ad space in yearbook. Usually these are for local businesses or parents to wish their kids congratulations on graduating.

They did NOT allow her to put it as her senior picture.

I actually think the girl is not adorable in the least.  I saw this on FB too and many people were like "Well, she IS stunning, but..." Stunning!?  The second photo, she looks extremely uncomfortable and ridiculous and like she's trying way too hard.

  • Celles, I'm with you on this one.

FWIW, I don't think either picture is particularly artistic. I'm sorry if :who she really is" is a hooker, but that's not appropriate for a HS yearbook. She needs to save those photos for her interview at the local strip club.

  • I'm with the school. That's not appropriate at all. I really don't understand how the photos capture who she is. I don't look at them and think "Oh, she must be passionate about the art of modeling." I just think it's a cute girl in a racy picture.
  • I'm also with the school on this.  The school is publishing the book, they have the right to dictate the content. I agree that she's pretty and it's a gorgeous photo, but they have every right to say what is in their yearbook.

When I was in HS, our senior photos coud only be headshots. No hands, no props, no nothing.

I do find it odd, though, that they will allow her photo in the ad section.  If they find it that inappropriate, why does it matter where it is?

And I agree with Celles. This is all the publicity she needs.

I actually got scolded for calling her "slutty" looking in a FB thread.  The OP didn't believe in "slut shaming."

I think she'd be lovely if she weren't rocking the barely legal pornstar look in one picture (sorry for the search engine hits that brings, TK...) and mutant contortionist in the other.

  • She looks like a stripper in those photos.  No way I would let my daughter look like that in the yearbook.

My daughters' HS lets seniors submit a photo for the yearbook.  If a photo isn't submitted they default to the standard school photo.  They had very strict guidelines as to what is acceptable and what is not, including dress code and pose.  For example, this photo was rejected because C's hand is visible (no hands are allowed at all - I guess so there's no hand sign flashing).

The rules are very straightforward, and the yearbook staff reserves the right to reject any photo that deviates.  That girl's mother is an absolute idiot.  Especially to threaten a lawsuit.  Geez, lady - put some clothes on that girl and take a decent picture.  It's not her personal modeling portfolio - it's a yearbook.

The way I see it, the senior portraits are supposed to be formal and tasteful and are the main section of the yearbook, whereas the ads are stuck at the back and vary greatly, since you have to pay to put them in. Different regulations for different sections. Also, I think that her racy photo would detract from the seriousness and elegance of other student's photos in the main section, so I see why the yearbook editors would do it that way.
I heard about this on the radio this morning. I'm with the school. Take those pictures to your MySpace or Facebook. Also, <strong>I'm pretty sure our senior pictures had to still be in line with our dress code</strong>. Which wasn't anything crazy by any means but meant you couldn't show your stomach or have straps less than an inch wide, skirts or shorts had to be fingertip length, etc.
    Posted by rachers1017
That makes a ton of sense to me.  If the school has a dress code, I think it is more than appropriate to enforce it in a year book photo.

  • Yeah, HS publications can be very competitive, so the kid's comment about it going against the professionalism of the publication was right on the money.
  • DDs' HS sold ads in the back, mostly for congratulatory stuff from parents, business cards from local places and parents, and baby pictures of the Seniors.

You bet, yearbook and newspaper competitions are huge at some schools. I think our high school's yearbook was always trying to compete at the highest levels (don't know if they quite made it there but it was considered one of the best ones in the area at the time) and they sure as hell didn't let people use their own senior pictures. You had to get it taken at a special portrait studio according to certain specifications (basically they looked like really nice regular school pictures in dressy clothes and were printed full color and larger in the yearbook) and if you didn't, well tough cookies, you didn't get a senior picture in the yearbook. I was told that uniformity of senior pictures was one of the things the yearbook judging people looked for.

  • IMO I don't think it is even appropriate to put this pic as a senior ad. Either.

This is just plain not appropriate for school. I definitely agree that its all about getting attnetion. I am sure she and her mom are thrilled this thing is all over the internet/news.
