This is really meant for the lurkers so they can adjust their name before posting. We suggest anonymizing your handle/screen name because you are giving your information to the internet full of strangers. Do for the regs, do you googlestalk people when they use their real name or e-mail address as their handle?

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

Re: Using Names as Handles

  • Guilty. I wouldn't call it stalking though. I looked up a few since I joined.

I'm nosy, what can I say?

  • I wouldn't unless they were being shady and I was trying to investigate :)

Yep I have, to try to figure out if a post is MUD or not.

Another thing to consider besides using your full name/email as your SN...

If you use your first name as your sn (i.e. Melinda42289) and have a pic in your sig titled "Thompsonwedding.jpeg" or whatever... then I'm pretty sure you're that Melinda Thompson born on 4/22/1989 on FB with your profile not set to private.

I'm not even remotely a techie, but any hacker on a mission could find you out quick and make your life notsofun beyond your BSC wedding.

  • I googled my SN out of curiosity, and apparently someone with the same has a virtual pet account. Made for a pretty good laugh.

  • I google people who put their full name up there that are going hog wild down the BSC train and who seem not to be looking back. I don't do it to be mean, just to see what they're all about.

Apparently Sydaries is a real name.... And here my 11 year old self thought I was being clever.

You can find my old photobucket and sephora accounts, but that's about it.

I Googled my SN after a girl on my month board got massively stalked. All you get is results for Russian mail order brides. Apparently there is a large inventory of Daria, age 24s available for marriage.

  • I googled my SN. All that came up was TK, TN, TB.
  • Don't google my screenname if you watch Game of Thrones but haven't read the books. Then, read the books. ;)

  • PickleJuice, I want to thank you for the Adam pic.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • So, hours later....

    (I lost internet today)

I was trying to note also that people not on TK totally will googlestalk you when they know you in person, and if you're posting things like about your fake wedding, or hating your FMIL, or wanting to ditch your MOH, it might bite you in the ass later too.

Just an example, people google me a lot at work to get my information and one year, someone posted on a forum with a title that insinuates that they had sex with me. They go on to talk about how I have the hottest name...blah blah and that I gave them a good deal on equipment that I sell.

It's so embarrassing. It comes up all the time when people talk to me at work. I can't wait for my name to change. It just goes to show you the trail of horror that can be left on the internet for people to look at later.

I googled my screenname.  Pretty much everything is connected to TK.  Nothing about my personally.  My FB is locked down tight.  Thankfully Rachel is a pretty common first name and my initials are pretty common too.

ETA: The most revealing thing is my STD, which isn't all that revealing.

  • I googled my SN and saw the usual things that I have signed up for with this name, then I saw jenn5628 posted on Panama City Beach Wedding by The Knot.  What the hell is that?  I thought it mustn't be me, but is shows threads that I posted on TK (about a half dozen), but when you click on them if doesn't show you the post, just vendor sites.  WTF is this??

That shows up on mine too. I have no idea what it is.
  • Ahh, same with 'West Palm Beach Weddings' by TK... and several other American cities.???

  • I use anonymous names for everything, The only thing that'll come up is TN and TK, but that's just because the two are linked, of course.

When I google images myself, this is what pops up (and i'm not complaining) :

I tend to use different handles on every site I join. I just Googled my old TK sn, and I only found my old TK posts, and a Photobucket account that I gave fake info to (So you wouldn't even learn my maiden name from it) and made private (So you can't actually see any of the pics I had on there).

Google my current TK sn, and you get several pages of Scott Pilgrim fan sites (hell yeah!) before any of my TK stuff even blips on the radar.

    Online safety people, it's important!

@rachelBFMD totally I figured the last four letters stood for big fucking medical doctor.
  • @NYCMercedes, people have all sorts of different sayings for what the four letter mean.  Always cracks me up to hear them.  Too bad it's not that interesting.  Just my current last initial, my future last initial, and M.D. because I'm working on it. The best one I heard so far is "big mother fucking deal" from someone who always read the letters in the wrong order.

  • Sweet, mine SN came up mostly Twitter and Instagram, of which I have neither.  Then it was TK, way down.  I'll admit that even having my real FB account in the Knottie Treehouse gives me the heebie-jeebies, but I've already got 2 FB accounts and the thought of trying to keep a 3rd one straight made me want to cry

  • If you google my real name, which as far as I know I'm the only one, you get some TV recaps I used to do, and loved doing, but damn, it's like writing a thesis every week, for free, and once I had to plan a wedding I was all fuck that noise. Mostly on here I think if you knew me personally it would take you ten seconds to figure out it was me just based on posts and dates and cities, so I'm terrified to say anything about any actual people.

If you google this name you get Game of Thrones spoilers. So don't.

  • Man, if I ever need a new sn I'm just going to flip the F and the M.  It'll be great.
