Major etiquette wow!

So I wanted to post this because it really flabbergasted me. Don't know if this girl at work doesn't know etiquette or has no class, or even both!

As I walked into work today I saw a girl who I am friendly with on the elevator. I say friendly because this is a girl who I once was friends with but got mad at me because of some work issues with the boss and so she rarely talks to me now. Anyways we were talking about how wedding plans were going, we are getting married within a month of each other, when she says "So now that your invites are out have you gotten a bunch of gifts?"  Needless to say I was flabbergasted and literally just stood there for a second trying to figure out what to say. When I did answer I just said that we weren't expecting a bunch of gifts because we are having a DW and we understand that people are paying a bunch to travel and be with us that weekend.

It might have been one thing if she had been my best friend saying this, but really for someone who you barely speak with to ask such a question. When I got to my desk I was thinking if I get her a wedding gift I'd send her Emily Post's book on etiquette.

Anyways hope all you etiquette girls had a good laugh because I sure did after the fact.

  • It was a bit personal but sounds like elevator conversation to me. Do you think it came off as rude because of your history with her?

  • The girls at my work who are also planning their weddings talk nonstop about gifts. I just laugh.

    She's rude. Eye roll.
  • Ehh it wasn't polite but I don't see it as a huge issue...it was probably an awkward moment and she just brought up something random
  • I don't think she was being rude at all. It was just elevator small talk.

Live fast, die young. Bad Girls do it well. Suki Zuki.

  • I think that it's a bit forward and nosey to ask about something like that, but I don't think it's a big deal.  She was probably just making small talk and didn't really think about how her question may come across.
  • She was probably just curious. Some people aren't good at wording things, or have the wrong tone. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Nosy, yes.  It didn't seem hostile though, but still, not her business.
  • A bit nosey and forward, sure, but just sounds like small talk to me.  Some of my colleagues ask the most random things!

I don't think it's such a big deal.  You don't expect gifts, but gifts aren't a taboo topic of conversation.

It sounds like you don't like her.  Why talk wedding with her?  Talk about the weather for the elevator ride.
  • She sounds like a dink.
