Makeup and a non-girly-girl

Makeup is not my thing and I am struggling to make a makeup plan for my wedding day! Our budget doesn't allow for me to pay someone else to do it, so I need all the advice I can get. More info at my blog: http://www.inthefontofa.com/?p=145

Re: Makeup and a non-girly-girl

  • Have you thought about going to MAC or somewhere similar and ask their consultants for help/opinions?  They would be able to point you in the right direction as far as what kind of foundation color and concealer and such would work best for your skin as well as last all day for your wedding.

My one main tip is to keep your makeup simple since you do not wear a lot.  You want to look like you not like a crazy makeup covered bride.  Also, pick one feature on your face that you want to play up and have stand out.  Do you love your eyes?  Then maybe go for a smokey look to really make them stand out.  Do you love your lips?  Then maybe try out some brighter lipstick to make them shine.

Also, practice, practice, practice.  You want to be able to do your wedding makeup without having to think about it too much.  Because on your wedding day you will be nervous and excited and the last thing you want is to have to think too hard about anything.

  •  I don't know what your timeline is like, but if you have the time to before your wedding you can go to the MAC makeup counter or store and get them to do your makeup for you. They only ask that you spend $50 on makeup. You could get the lipstick they use to do touchups and maybe the foundation as well.
  • Would any of your bridesmaids or maid of honor be able to help? Having someone that knows you go shopping for makeup and helping you apply it might make this a lot easier.

Practicing quite a few times before your wedding day will really help.

One more suggestion - especially if you don't wear foundation often, I recently started using BB creme (Maybelline or the Garnier kind) and that with just a little bit of powder has been amazing for me.
  • One of my BM was in a same boat. One of my other BM wears makeup daily & looks wonderful so we asked her if she would do the other BM make up for her that day. They did a trial one day to test out colors and look ahead of time.

Do you have any friends (don't even have to be BM) or family members whose makeup you like that would be willing to help you pick out some stuff and do a test run on you?

  • If you go to a make-up counter to get it done, I would go to Clinique over MAC. They have lots of natural shades and formulas for sensitive skin if you're not used to wearing make-up. Bring in a couple of photos you like (google natural makeup looks) and don't be afraid to ask them to change things if you don't like it - you're essentially paying for the service by buying the products.

  • I would check out a Bobbi brown counter if there is one at a department store near you. Their makeup is a lot of earth tones and subtle beauty.

  • I would just be careful about going to a counter to learn about products and then buying ones to use on your wedding day. Depending on the quality of products you end up buying, it could actually cost you quite a bit more than paying a professional to do your make-up. This would be a good investment if you're someone who plans to wear make-up on a regular basis in the future, but not if you're only going to buy it for your wedding day and then toss it (or let it live in the back of your closet or something similar).

The way I look at is....it's your wedding day, all eyes will be on you and it's probably one of the most photographed days of your life.....you want to look like the best version of your self.  If you don't have the experience or the materials, let the pros take care of it.

And honestly, for the money you will spend buying the makeup you need it will probably work out cheaper (or near it) to have it done professionally.  You will also have the bonus of not having to worry about practicing and getting it perfect the day of the wedding.  Good luck!
  • Honestly, unless you trust your mom or a close friend to apply it for you, I'd spring for the professional, and here's why. Make-up in this case is not about being a girly-girl. A bare face just doesn't photograph all that well. It ends up looking flat, and the features tend to look smaller than they actually are. So you need someone who knows what they're doing to apply natural-looking make-up that will make you look like you in your pictures. Or look on YouTube and practice lots, including having someone take pictures of the results. Generally speaking, you're going to want concealer and some kind of foundation (whether that's liquid or powder). A primer is a really good idea when you're going to be photographed all day long, so put that on before the foundation. The one I use is Avon Magix Illuminating Face Perfector. It smoothes everything out and keeps things from getting oily. You will also need mascara, and it would be wise to do eyeshadow as well. Blush and lipstick are good if you don't have naturally pink cheeks and lips, but subtlety is key.

  • I'm another non-make-up wearing lady.

My sister is doing my make up, but last weekend we hit up two make up counters at the mall; Laura Mercier and MAC.

I actually liked the Laura Mercier line the best.  It's very light and I didn't look overdone.  Also, it was free.  MAC charges $50 for the artist (they threw in a free mascara that's $21 usually).

My sister did a bunch of research prior to hitting both up; Laura Mercier came highly recommended for photos due to lack of "flash back" from flash photography.

I felt that MAC was too pancakey feeling, and it felt smeary.  It was also a bit more 'dramatic' than what I would normally do (excluding when I'm performing on stage, then I overdo the eye make up).

Honestly, why not schedule an appointment with a make up counter on the day of?  Neither one of my two artists did a bad job.  I felt either would have looked nice on my wedding day as both were told that I don't wear much, so they kept it fairly subtle (MAC gave me the 'smokey eye look', which was more dramatic than Laura Mercier).  So, if you have the time prior to your ceremony and getting dressed time, go for it.  ;)  Make an appointment.

Otherwise, YouTube is a great resource.  Google videos.  Sit and apply make up following tutorials.  Yes, you may have to buy some foundation or powder or whatever you might need, but that's always part of it.

    Good luck!!
