Your favorite podcasts?

So I'm a big nerdy-nerd who loves to listen to NPR, especially when I'm doing housework.  Lately I've been on a kick listening to all the archived podcasts of This American Life. Radiolab is another one of my favorites.  Now I'm looking for new things to listen to.  I like listening to music too, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood, or it doesn't keep me thoroughly entertained as much as I'd like while I'm doing the things I especially hate like, folding laundry.

Do any of you ladies have any podcasts or online programs you thoroughly enjoy?  I like pretty much any topic-  science, politics, the arts, philosophy/religion, literature, you name it.  Anything that is informative and interesting, especially if it presents new information and recent discoveries.

Re: Your favorite podcasts?

  • I think you just stole my heart. When I read the title of the post I was going to write "all things NPR"!!!

  • Haha, yeah I know right?  I was actually just looking through their directory, there's a ton of stuff that doesn't play on my local station.  I'm slightly overwhelmed now!
  • We love Jay & Silent Bob Get Old. We fire it up whenever we're on a long drive. It's super funny and of course they're humor can be sophomorish but I feel like there's some life lessons in there and a sense of community too. Sounds weird but give it a try.

I like photography also so I listen to the Improve Photography podcast. I really like that they include all levels and always have something new to talk about. It always makes me feel fired up to take my camera out.

The Moth and This American Life both have good stories shared by various people.

Sometimes I listen to Dave Ramsey but I get tired of it kind of quickly.

Shit, I totally forgot about The Moth, thanks for the reminder!.  I'll have to checkout the Jay and Silent Bob one, didn't realize it existed.
  • I like history ones so I have been listening to Stuff you missed in History Class, History Chicks (famous women in history) and Bowery Boys (all about NY history- which as a non-NYer is still very interesting). Yeah, I'm a nerd.
  • I live on podcasts. Don't know if you like quiz shows, but I adore Ask Me Another, which is very geeky. Other faves are Savage Love (sex advice), Science Friday, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (news quiz) and The Splendid Table (food and recipes). I loved Talk of the Nation on NPR which was canceled (sigh.)

Those all sound great! I'd actually heard of Bowery Boys and totally meant to add it to Itunes but completely forgot about it. Glad you mentioned it!  Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, I love Ask Me Another!- thats one FI and I usually listen to together, as well as Wait Wait.  I love to read Savage Love, I forget that he does it as a podcast too.  Dan Savage has a great voice for listening too.  The lady on Splendid Table is amazing. She sounds like shes having an orgasm whenever shes talking about a particularly delicious dish.
I'm upset that they canceled Talk of the Nation too.  I'll definitely check out Science Friday.
  • Hamish & Andy - They are Australian but so am I and I think they are hilarious!

I love Pop Culture Happy Hour, which is another NPR production. H is obsessed with comedy podcasts (I like them too) and his favorites are The Nerdist, Doug Loves Movies, and Comedy Bang Bang.

    ETA: H not FI :)
  • If you're a raging liberal/progressive like myself and/or like hearing stories that don't get a lot of mainstream coverage - Citizen Radio is AMAZING. I listen every day from their website (wearecitizenradio.com) and my BF does the podcasts. They are a husband & wife team, both comedians, and they are super well-informed as well as being HYSTERICAL.

    Daisypath Anniversary tickers

  • I have started getting into Planet Money recently because of This American Life - all the episodes are fairly short (under 20 minutes). I also really like Fresh Air (another NPR production).

My favorite is Marek vs. Wyshynski - but that's a hockey podcast, so niche market...
  • Sf Squeecast is a lot of fun-it's several writers/editors talking about their favorite SF things.
War Rocket Ajax is a fun silly one that's often about comics, but also videogames, and whatever else they feel like talking about. I just think it's funny.
Notes from Coode Street is an Austalian SF editor and critic.
Locus Roundtable is another good one with sff critics.
StarShipSofa also sf but a different mix of stuff.
Writing Excuses is another group of writers mostly talking about writing.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Thanks everyone! These are all great suggestions.  Knew y'all would come through.  Can't wait to listen to these while I get the house ready for visitors and work on some last minute wedding stuff!
  • Young turks. And all things NPR.
