Can't figure out what the men should wear. HELP!

I am having a fall wedding. It will be outside at a bed and breakfast. I have my dress picked out, it is champagne (satin). My FH wants to wear jeans, which I have no problem with. It is who he his. It is a small wedding party (just FH, best man, and my dad). I was thinking having them wear dark blue jeans and vests and ties. My problem is that I can't decide what color vests and ties. Please help.

Re: Can't figure out what the men should wear. HELP!

  • You are wearing a satin bridal gown and your FI is wearing jeans?  No!
I know you don't want to hear this, but your FI should either wear a suit or a sports jacket and trousers.  At least khakis, not jeans.  This is your wedding, for heaven's sake!!

  • Not a fan of blue jeans for a wedding- seems way too casual.  If you and FI are really set on him wearing jeans, what about black ones? At least they give a more formal aura than blue jeans

No.  Jeans are jeans.  Way too casual for a wedding.  And OP, ties and vests do not go with jeans, either.

  • What about a tan vest & tie & a white shirt?

  • I agree with CMGragain about jeans being inappropriate.  It looks really weird and mismatched to me when brides (and bridesmaids, if applicable) are in long, formal wedding gowns, but the grooms (and groomsmen) are dressed like they are super casual.  Examples:

forgive quickly. kiss slowly. love truly. laugh uncontrollably <img class=" />
How about khakis and a white button down shirt?  Example:

    Or just regular suits?  Example:

  • I disagree with PPs. Now my hubby wore a coat for the ceremony but we had a country wedding with all the men wearing jeans, vests, and ties. I think it depends on what kind of look you are going for. If you want a formal looking wedding, then jeans are too casual, but if you want the more casual/country type feel, then jeans will fit.

I give you credit for letting FI wear what he wants, but I have to side with PPs. I think jeans will look really odd.

Can FI suck it up for one day and wear dress pants with a button up shirt without a tie, jacket, or vest? Even that would look better than jeans.

  • I think there is absolutely no problem if he wants to get married wearing jeans, but then you should be in something casual, too. There's nothing wrong with a casual wedding at all. But the bride and groom should look like they're attending the same event. If you're wearing a long satin dress then he should be wearing a suit and tie. I suggest you find a more casual dress, or you explain to him that you'll be dressing for a fancy event and so he needs to dress for the same event.
  • If your dress is champagne, will there be any other colors in the decor such as flowers? That may be a good way to bring color in. Otherwise, I would it keep it neutral with dark grey or black.

To address your question, blue denim and champagne are fairly neutral so many colors would look nice. Navy, black, dark red, purple, or even white would probably work. Do you have bridesmaids? I think your best bet is to pick a color that compliments, matches, or goes with their dresses. If you don't have any bridesmaid dresses, I say pick a fall color, like rust or brown. Brown would like really nice with some dark jeans and I think it would look nice with your dress, too.

edit: re-read more carefully and you don't have bridesmaids. So anything that looks nice with the denim color.

  • I don't really care if your guy wears jeans or not. As long as you guys are good hosts that's all that matters to me. I mean you got to pick your dress so he should able able to wear what he wants too. I think this is a victimless crime.

  • Hysilvinialithibel I agree maybe the vests and ties can be champagne so it can tie in with your dress

  • My brother wore a tux jacket and vest with black jeans at his wedding. The ushers wore the same. I thought it looked nice. It's very common in Texas for a groom and his men to wear jeans. They're all cowboys after all, they want to wear boots.

As far as your guys, I think your groom should match you, so his vest should be champagne in color. I would have your best man and dad in something different, but complimentary. Perhaps lavender, navy blue, or plum. If you have a color that will be used frequently in your flowers, consider that, or if you are having any bridesmaids, have the guys (other than your groom) match them.

Our groomsmen will match our bridesmaids, but my groom will match me.

  • I like the look of chocolate brown vests with jeans. Plus I think the chocolate brown would compliment the champagne nicely.

  • I didn't realize that every guy in Texas was a cowboy. Who knew?!

  • I really don't think a man's occupation decides what is proper clothing to wear to a formal occasion, like a wedding.

If he wants to wear jeans and you're fine with it, then by all means, wear jeans.  That day is about the two of you, and you should both be happy and comfortable.  Don't worry about you "should" do, and just do what you want to do.  The wedding will be a more accurate reflection of who you are that way, it will be more comfortable, more memorable, and your guests will appreciate its uniqueness and how well it fits you.

As far as color of vests and ties, you really can do anything.  Do you have any other colors picked out?  Flowers, accessories, anything at all?  You can try to match it up to that, if you want.  Otherwise, what's your favorite color on your FH?  Is there a specific color that you really enjoy seeing him in?  If so, why not go with that?  One of the reasons I picked green is because my FH looks dang good in green.

The bolded is terrible advice!  Yes, you can wear what you want, but be prepared for some criticism if you choose something that is not the norm.  (Like jeans at a wedding.)  You posted here asking for advice, and you got some that you don't like.  Whatever you decide, I hope you have a happy wedding day.

  • I live in Texas. Yes the majority of the men I know (which I know do not make up the entire population of the state) are more comfortable in jeans and boots which if done the right way can be dressed up to include what they wear in weddings.

"Among the western tuxedo’s various manifestations the delineation is pretty evident.  Obviously, a traditional tuxedo suit and formal shirt that were accessorized with cowboy boots, hat and western tie would be the most refined interpretation.  Switching the formal trousers for dark, dressy jeans takes the outfit’s formality down a notch but is still faithful to black tie’s conventional black-and-white palette." from http://blog.blacktieguide.com/2013/12/19/western-tuxedo-etiquette/

If you guys are happy during the day and married at the end of it, who cares if you have rude guests who are snarky about his jeans?  They'll get over it, and the day isn't about them anyway.  Your job is to get married and to celebrate, not to appease the masses with your fashion choices.

He should wear jeans if that is what he wants to wear.  The pictures that were posted that were supposed to show jeans and wedding dresses looking awkward look lovely to me.  Everyone has different tastes and if yours is for dark blue jeans I say go for it.

I agree with nlh85 go for a color you know he looks really good in.  The color of your dress is neutral enough to match with a wide range of colors.

Edit: I might have a bit of a bias though.  My father wore jeans to his wedding with a vest and tie.  I have loved looking at their wedding photos my whole life.  Imagine perhaps someday your little girl looking at her daddy in his wedding photos and loving it for being "so him".
