Yeah, it wasn't really a "grievance".  It was more an "observation".    :  )
  • OWN, I am not whitewashing the issue. There are certain things I can talk about and some I cannot. My dad is a top executive in the National organization, but if that's how it's viewed, then that's how it's viewed.
But you are correct in that we've agreed to disagree.

I really don't have a horse in this race, but I'm curious.  I don't know much about the BSA, but by doing this, aren't they running the risk of losing support of the national organization, or even the ability to operate at all by doing this?

Fair enough.  But really . . . is there any OTHER way to view "The BSA chooses those who they think will be best role models for boys as leaders" and "gay people are not allowed to be leaders"?  I can't understand why gay men would be any more or less likely to be good role models than straight men.

Is there, really, any rational basis for that?  I just don't see one.  If you or your father can provide one, I'd love to hear it.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. girl scouts sucked. the girls were horrible to me.. so horrible I had to leave and go to a new troop.

seriously... they were mean because I was "short and brown". It was a troop through my Catholic school. shockingly the school did sh*t to deal with the issue.

[QUOTE]Kcullen, FWIW, I have been going around and around on this in my head because my son wants to join BSA.  After looking into it extensively, I abhor the anti-gay policy, I think it's an embarassing, cruel, and horrible anachronism that will eventually be abolished.  I frankly think Missy is whitewashing the issue because she has had such an overwhelmingly positive experience with the scouts (she and I have gone a few rounds on it, lol.  We've agreed to disagree). Our local troops, simply put, ignore the national policy.  They ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist except that they talk about it with the boys.  I'm very very very close to allowing my son to join - I used to think of it more like "There is no way I can lend my $$ and time and support to an organization with this horrible policy" but now I think of it more like "Our locals are giving a big F__ You to the national organization, by taking the good stuff they offer and ignoring the bad."

See there's my problem too, because of some antiquated policy parents like you have to struggle with allowing their boys to join because it conflicts with their personal values when in general the BSA is a positive organization. But for the record, I think what you teach your kids at home is far more important than any policy the BSA maintains. So they'll be ok <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

I think what M&M means is that the BSA had its own thread very recently and was already debated.  If someone had an issue with something specific said in the the BSA thread to flame, then fine.  But debating it all over again is kind of like beating a dead horse and not really what a grievance thread is about.

  • I agree, when I was in Girl Scouts, we promoted the whole "Be who you are" mentality. In my first troop, we had a girl who had had a stroke so she was paralyzed on one side, and in my second troop, we had a girl who had to have a stoma put in when she was a toddler because she choked on a toy. I also remember that I had a Girl Scout camp counselor who was a lesbian and I remember admiring her for her wicked lanyard-making skills LOL. That all taught us about how people can be different, and still be the same, and I don't recall a parent complaining about it bothering them that their daughters were being led by a lesbian. In fact, my parents thought it was awesome that I was getting valuable life experiences.

In the end, all I can remember was that I had a ton of fun learning from all of my fellow Scouts and Leaders/Counselors.
