I almost lost it at the BMV today...

Preface: I am an extremely quiet, soft-spoken person. In fact, I am a parochial elementary school teacher. I do not curse. I rarely raise my voice. I usually just 'go with the flow' and don't let things upset me.

But I actually stormed out of the BMV today. Like, yelled, "This is absolutely ridiculous!" and stormed outside.

My DH (of 3 weeks) was fairly shocked...

We went there to get his new license, as he moved from another state. We also needed to title and register the new vehicle we purchased from my father's dealership in my home state. This is the fourth time I've had to do an out-of-state title, and EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. it requires multiple visits and incredible frustration because they want something filled out differently than the way they wanted it the last time. This time, we made sure it was filled out exactly the same as they wanted my vehicle's when I went in THREE MONTHS ago. Two ladies started looking at the back, and saying, "Oh, that's not right...and that should be filled in...And..." and I was just so angry!

(This was also after we had to pay over $100 because the refund check they sent me because they made an error and overcharged me when taking care of my vehicle was actually an error, and if I didn't pay it by the end of the week I would face "further legal action"--seriously, they sent an extremely threatening letter like I had committed some felony by cashing they check they mailed to me three months ago...)

I walked around outside fuming for a few minutes, then went back in and let DH do all the talking. We left, ran around and took care of what we thought was needed, came back, and something still wasn't the way they wanted it. Came home, got it fixed, and DH tried to go back but they were closed.

I don't understand how this can seriously be so difficult. My father's dealership sells vehicles in other states and even in Canada all the time. The only time they've ever had difficulties is with my state.

The most frustrating thing is that this has to get taken care of before I can go to the S.S. office to change my name...

  • Well, that just sounds like a huge cluster of fun...sorry it was so stressful! Hope everything else re: changing your name and getting all the fun paperwork stuff straightened out goes much more smoothly.

  • I think there are people work for DMV with the sole job of trying to figure out how to make each process more annoying.

  • Gaaaah that's the worst! When I moved to AZ, the DVM there took my homestate license, punched a hole in it, handed it back to me with their new valid license. Great. Well a few years later I move back to homestate. I go to the DMV and they say "you need to surrender your AZ license to us". Well the picture on it was amazing and I just wanted it as a keepsake of having lived there so I lie and say I lost it. She proceeds to tell me that without it, I need to retake the driver's exam. I was like why, I'm licensed?! She's like not if you don't surrender the current one. I started screaming why can't you just punch a hole so it's invalid and give it back to me? And she just kept refusing saying this state can't do that. Finally after about 30 minutes of yelling and causing a scene, I decided it was not worth it to retake the exam (with fee) so I threw the AZ license at her. I was so mad lol.

  • The DMV makes me so stabby.

  • Haha, that would be the bmv. . . I have gone in there so many times with basically the same problem. They say bring 2 proof of addresses, I will bring 5 just to make sure that they are "good enough". I go out of my way and bring in a million extra documents of every type of document required . . . and have still managed to get sent away.

  • When I moved to the last state I lived in I had no idea what to do to get a new license/register my car.  Up to that point I had only lived in one state so after I passed my test it was just a matter of paying the renewal fee, getting a new picture, and updating my address when I moved (which I could do over the freaking phone, no proof required).  So I go into the DMV in the new state and they tell me I need copies of certain documents, next time I go in they tell me I can't bring copies, I need original documents (apparently their definition of copy and mine are two different things).  Then I go in and they tell me I need proof of insurance.  So I go back with everything and they tell me they are not permitted to look at my proof of insurance.  Instead of verifying it when get your license/register a car they randomly send out requests to people asking them to send in proof of insurance to the state capital and if they don't receive it they revoke your license.  Now here is a huge flaw in the system.  The state has a huge military community.  Service members get deployed and there have been cases of these letters being sent while they are on deployment and they get home from war to discover their license has been revoked.

They are awful.  I had to get a new license a few months ago.  I went in, checked in, and took a number. Then I had to wait for 45 minutes in line.  I get to the front and they tell me since I got my first license after xyz date, I have to pass an alcohol awareness test.  And they give me a driver's manual to study.  And it's now about 10 minutes before it closes, after waiting for 45 minutes, and they say I have about five minutes before the test machines close.  WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THAT 45 MINUTES AGO SO I WOULD HAVE MORE TIME TO STUDY!?!?

So I take the test.  It's like 10 questions and you have to get 7 right.  I got 6 right.  So I ask to take it again. They said no, I had to wait a day.  I was so MAD.

So that was the day my license expired.  So their stupid test was putting an un-licensed driver on the road. Brilliant plan, guys.

Also, the reason I don't know how many shots it takes to get up to the BAC level is because, well, I DON'T TAKE SHOTS!  I drink wine occasionally and beer rarely.  So basically, this test (in my opinion) is punishing the people who don't drink or rarely drink (who wouldn't be driving drunk anyway) because they will have much less knowledge of how much it takes to be impaired and how long for being tipsy or drunk to wear off.

So then I had to stand in line again for a long time the next day.

Even now, I'm getting mad just thinking about it!

ETA: Oh, and before you take the test, they take your phone. Well, the second day, she didn't ask for my phone and I didn't tell her about it (spaced, I guess).  And after the test, she was like "Oh, did you have a phone?"  You're asking me now?!  I told her I didn't bring it because there was no way in anything she was making me wait another day!  (I didn't cheat anyway.)
