Weirdest job

What's the weirdest job you've ever held? I found myself shocking a friend again tonight and figure I can't have the only good stories!

- Palm reading at parties
- Brief stint as a phone domme
- Phone concierge to D-list celebrities
- Dental model (my teeth have been in trade journals)

What's your strangest work experience?

Re: Weirdest job

  • Not nearly as weird and cool as some of yours, but:

I spent a summer as a door-to-door canvasser for a non-profit political lobbying group.  My entire job was to knock on your door and convince you to hand over cash or a check on the spot.  We worked on environmental issues, gay rights, consumer advocacy.

I got really good at it, too.  I was #4 nationwide in money raised by the end of the summer.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Tourism.  It got weird sometimes.  You'd have crazy tourists who would say the stupidest things.  "Oh hey, is that *points at nearby ravine* the divide between Alaska and Russia?"  "Do you know Sarah Palin?"  "Where can I pan for white gold?"  "Do you speak Japanese/Russian?"

We had lovely uniforms of huge men's sized denim shirts coupled with denim pants.  So the shirts, even in size small, were too huge for a lot of us girls (most of us were pretty slender.)

And we had to help find an old guy's teeth that one time.
  • During college I had an old-man-sitting job that was pretty weird. He was 85 and his wife was around 55, so she hired students to care for her husband while she was at work all day.

He was an accomplished former doctor, professor, and director at the university. It was weird because I knew he was absolutely brilliant, but he had severe dementia, and even though he still had this amazing knowledge of science and medicine, he couldn't remember how to do basic daily tasks. He was pretty cool to hang out with though, and he had some crazy stories. He validated a campus legend about monkeys escaping from the university's primate research center, where he was director.

  • Definitely not as weird as yours!

And now I'm going to age myself. Back in the 90s, they passed a law in NY that if you were going to switch phone carriers over the phone, you had to have a 3rd party verify the change. I worked for the verification company. Basically the phone company would call us with the customer on the phone and we'd read a script. It was extremely boring, but all of my friends worked there. We'd have office chair races in the hallway.
  • @lovesclimbing, I used to deckhand on a charter boat out of Cook Inlet. We could always tell the "trouble-maker" tourists and used to tell them the craziest stories after like the 5th stupid question.

*point to Mr. McKinley* "Is that Russia?"
-"Yep, in fact, if we go any further we'll be in foreign waters"

Glad there's another Alaskan on these boards :)

  • I was a Disney princess for kid's birthday parties. I played Ariel, Belle, Snow White and Jack Sparrow.

I guess the job wasn't that weird, but it's the weirdest one I've had.

  • I got nothing.  I only worked normal jobs.  I  worked at a sporting clothing store.  We called ourselves sneaker pimps cos we mostly sold running shoes.  I've worked at a bookstore and the as a lifeguard.  Teaching junior high would have to be it, since I do so much there other than teach.

  • I was a census enumerator once! I went door to door talking to people who didn't send in their census forms, and essentially read them the form and filled it out for them. It was a lot of college kids thinking they had been counted on their parents, but there was one old guy out in the BOONIES that couldn't read, and I had to read him the privacy statement and explain it to him. The other enumerators couldn't even find his house. GPS was useless and the house itself didn't look inhabited. I drove by it ten times myself.

I'd do it again. I had fun, plus it was good money.

  • Not weird, but annoying as all get out. I worked at Coldstone right out of high school. Dumbest. Job. Ever. I never did get those stupid tip jingles out of my head.

  • I was a an assistant for my city's public works department. I sent out citations if people didn't recycle properly or if they put out bulk trash on a regular trash day.

I also traveled around Maryland asking people to fill out surveys about recreation on the Chesapeake Bay. It was a project with my university. I used to be able to get a tan and drink while doing it!

  • I have nothing ha, all my jobs could seem normal. I've been a work study in the front office, work study in the work study room, and now I'm still a work study but I've been promoted as manager of the museum. This summer I'm also working at two other museums. I think the weirdest thing is I've had to tell adults the sting rays were actually horse shoe crabs...

  • Man I wish I had something interesting. In high school and college I did- waitress, bank teller, camp counselor, assistant title examiner, Bath & Body works (quit after a month) and since college I've been an accountant. But my last job was accounting for a cardboard box factory which people always got a kick out of.

I had a stint as Hello Kitty in high school. It was part of my regular job of working at the San Rio store. Every so often, I (and the other girls) would have to dress up as Hello Kitty and walk around the mall. I couldn't see a thing out of the costume, so I needed another coworker to lead me around. But it was fun. I had little kids running up and hugging me, which was very sweet.

  • It wasn't a weird job, but I was the manager of a pizza place in a tourist town on the Jersey shore. So I deal with all the mistakes or angry customers. Some crazy things happened from time to time. But I think the craziest was on a Saturday night of July 4th weekend. We were slammed! A lady placed a huge order that included a cheeseburger. Well, the driver left the cheeseburger in his car, so lady didn't get it. Lady tries calling us repeatedly, but like I said, we are slammed and it was constantly busy. So lady comes down to the restaurant. She tells me about the cheeseburger. So I go in the back and some how, our cook has a burger on the grille! Usually they took 15 mins or so to cook, since they were done fresh and not par-cooked. So I get this lady a cheeseburger in less than 2 minutes. She opens it up, rips it in half and starts waiving it around in my face saying her son can't eat this, it's pink in the middle. So I think hold up the receipt and say, "But ma'm, you ordered it medium. It's supposed to be pink in the middle." She then Loses. Her. Shit. She's screaming and yelling, I had to get the owner to come in and thankfully the owner backed me up. The owner refunded her a portion of her order and then asked her to never come back.
  • I drew caricatures at Disney World for a summer in high school. One of my Uncle's in-laws works there and got me the job. It paid next to nothing, but it was awesome!
  • Right after high school I spent about 6 months doing porn. Not the best decision I ever made, especially since my ex spammed my FB with links to the sites as revenge when I dumped him. Before I finally realized it was a bad idea I actually had a lot of fun.

  • Yes blabla that sounds like it could be one of mine ;-) Take out sounds good about now.

One of my BMs has been doing it for years. Occasionally an ex BF will attempt the same thing but, in the end, he's always the one who looks bad.

She loves the industry and makes a hell of a lot more money than I can. I just worry about future jobs.

The money was definitely great, I just wish I had been smarter with it. To this day I have no clue what  I blew it all on because my car was a piece of crap and my rent and bills were really cheap.

Assuming your friend uses a stage name getting another job in the future should be fine. I have dug into the depths of the internet and there is no way to connect those videos with my real name. There is still the chance a future employer may have seen her work, I did run into some guy in a bar 3 years later who called me by my stage name.

She's been very smart about it. Plus, while she now has a few websites of her own, I've managed all of them. She's also had a lot of business advice from mutual friends who have started small (non-adult) businesses. She's great from that perspective. The bigger issue is that she started acting when she was young and doesn't have anything that she can put on a resume.

  • At 15 I worked on the weekends for a flea market in our area. The owner of our space had large cardboard boxes filled with porn videos. At that age it was really weird to see grown men paw through those boxes and giggle with their buddies like school children.

Actually, that would still be weird.

  • I work at a nuclear power plant... most people get a kick out of that.. other than that i was an RA in school, which definitely had its weirdddd moments, a Hostess at a Red Lobster, and a camp counsleor

I was one of those mascots that stand out by the side of the road in a costume and dance.

It was a tomato costume for some Italian place. Technically I was volunteering because my high school NHS was having a spaghetti dinner fundraiser there. But still the weirdest "job" I've ever done. And really fun!
