Wedding colors... orange and blue???

Hey all... choosing wedding colors is SO much harder than I thought it would be!!! We set a date for late July of 2011 and I really like the idea of blue and orange as our wedding colors but everyone keeps telling me this is a baaad idea. Is there anyone else out there who thinks it can work in a good way? I'm not good with envisioning colors, etc in my mind but I have my home depot paint chips!!

(also... my fiance doesn't want to wear a black or brown suit but he's good with any other color)

  • Blue and orange is brilliant and can be done super well. Blue and Orange are opposites on the color wheel, so the contrast is super striking. Definitely keep the attire blue and use orange accents...like this: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HPhulogliD0/SlTlZwvLLgI/AAAAAAAAAWo/FSVR5XeJ2Ic/s400/board_navyblueandorange.jpg I did a style sheet for a girlfriend who wants this. She's a huge Auburn fan, so that's where she's going with it, but I don't necessarily think it has to go that football way.

  • Would your fiance wear a dark blue suit ....?

Orange/Blue is lovely, here's some ideas:

  • Well, I for one would love an orange and blue wedding, but I can guarantee I'd be thinking of the Gators the entire time. And so would everyone else in my family.
  • It isn't my favorite color combo - but I don't see how it is "bad" - go for what you like!

My only suggestion would be to pick the BM dress color based on what would look better on them. Orange can be a tough color to wear.

Around here everyone would think of the University of Virginia. I think it's a popular color combo.

  • I agree with some of the previous posts...as long as you use orange and navy blue, I think it would look amazing. Not that you want your wedding to be compared to a baby's room, but my friend decorated her son's nursery in these two colors and it looks amazing together! I would just make sure you use cream instead of stark white, or maybe even beige.

Also, are you set on bright orange and blue? I think a coral and turquoise or even Tiffany blue would look good.
  • If those are the colors you want, go for them. I think they will look great together. You could always throw in an accent color as well.
  • It can be tough, but like PP said, when properly balanced, it could look very nice. I would suggest picking one color to be "bright" and the other to be more toned down (So like a tangerine with navy, or burnt sienna with cobalt).

My other suggestion, please, please, please, if you must stick your BMs in orange dresses (Which, I'd vote for the blue, myself), for the love of Jesus consider their skin tones when picking the color! I was a BM in a wedding where the bride insisted on sticking a bunch of girls with Irish-pale skin in the most unflattering shade of bright orange imaginable. We all looked sick.

  • I would suggest navy blue BM dresses. My girls dressed in navy blue with an orange shrug and my FG wore a navy blue dress with an orange sash - so cute. Just do it! :)
  • Thanks for all of your input!!! I looked through pictures of yours... and I'm totally inspired!!! My MOH is a fair-skinned w/ light blonde hair so I think navy blue BM dresses and tangerine sounds beautiful. Slate grey suits sound like they would go well too. Hopefully the orange will make it nice and bright since the wedding is in July!

My fiance is a huge ILLINI fan (and alumni) so he was THRILLED when I mentioned this to him.

bbyckes... your photos are absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much! Thanks to everyone who responded :)

  • I was just thinking today how much I love orange and blue together for weddings! Go for it! Sure it makes me think of Boise State, but hey who cares?!

  • Don't listen to them! I picked orange and celery green for my May wedding and got lots of compliments. I picked orange and green roses for the flowers. They were beautiful! Orange is my new favorite color!

I love orange roses. They are soooooo pretty. And I think with navy dresses, they'd look stunning. Just my 2 cents, hahaha.

  • Those are pretty colors :o) It'll look great!!!
  • I love the colour contrast between orange and blue. Especially if you use vibrant shades of the two. Either way, go for what you like; it's your day! As long as you two are happy, everyone else will be happy for you. :)
