Wedding Invitations & Paper

Cost of Invites

How much have you or are you planning to spend on your invites? I'm not sure what is average or how much I should budget for that expense. Any and all thoughts and comments are appreciated!

This can be such a huge range. I needed about 30-35 invitations. I looked at websites with pocket invitations that would have costed me almost $400 total. I ended up buying a template on Etsy for $30 and spent $25 at a local print shop to print them off.

  • Really it comes down to how fancy you want your invites to be (what type of paper, what type of printing, how many inserts you will have, what type of envelopes, etc, etc).

I DIY'd my pocket fold invites and I think I spent about $175-$200 on all the materials (I used a lot of double sided tape, like a lot).  But if you figure I spent a shit ton of time making them and designing them sometimes I wish I had just spent the extra money to buy them from a vendor.

  • I too made pocket folds and purchased a templent on etsy.  I probably spent around $200-250 for everything and A LOT of time making them!  Like Maggie, i used A TON of double sided tape  After going through a couple of the small disposable ones i got smart and bought the huge tape dispensor.    If i did it over again I'd have them printed and cut for me (i did it all myself) since that was the most annoying part of it.

It really depends though - you can buy the sets at michaels pretty cheap and print vs the other end of the spectrum such as buying a custom made one or something on etsy and spend a ton.  There is such a huge range of options.    Also, it will depend how many enclosures you have  - if the ceremony are reception are at different places, accomodation cards, directions, etc.

  • My daughter created her own invitations and purchased pocket folders and envelopes from envelopes.com . I know it was a painstaking and time consuming project, but they were gorgeous. I cringe to think that most of that hard work probably ended up in the trash. She could have had them printed for less, but they wouldn't have had the detail and personal touch that she wanted. To tell the truth, though, I don't think she'd do it again.

Envelopes.com has wedding invitations starting at .99 for the invitation, add in inserts and envelopes.

  • It's so dependent on your budget and the formality level of your wedding. I really got in to the fancy paper and classic designs and didn't give a shit if they ended up in the trash or not because I loved them anyway. We ordered 100 invitations through William Arthur for $600. I think on average you see people spend more like $250 to $400. Don't forget that your overall cost is going to depend on how many invitations you need (plus a few extras for ones that get lost in the mail or if you mess up on an envelope or something).

  • FI and I budgeted around $200, but our reception vendor gets a 25% discount for Carlson Crafts. We'll be spending about $175.

My daughter didn't want to spend a big portion of her budget on invitations, so she had hers done at Vistaprint when they were 50% off.  I think we spent about $130 total, including escort cards.  She loved their designs!

My fiancé and I didn't really budget for invites because we too had no idea how much they cost. I honestly have been having a hard time picking invitations.  I didn't want to spend a lot of money on invites because people just throw them out. You should look on all the websites like zazzle, Vistaprint. Invitations by dawn. Wedding Paper Diva's. They always have great discounts and you can order samples ( some free, some cost .99 cents or more)
  • I ordered 80 invites from weddingpaperdivas.com came to about 175$ after 15 or 20% off. Still need to order RSVP cards.Any time ive been on that site ive seen some sort of sale going on, and vista print is normally very affordable as well.

  • We spent $200 for 50 but it included everything we needed: the invitation, reception insert, RSVP, addressed RSVP envelopes, inner envelopes, outer envelopes, and those blasted ribbons we struggled with last night.

  • We've spent about $640 on 50 invites so far. That does not account for postage. But I've always been really into nice stationery.

  • I am one of the least crafty people on the planet, but I still wanted custom. So I think I paid $400 for 55 invitations. The artwork was custom drawn and printed, it had three inserts in a pocket fold envelope, and the invitation closed with a ribbon. It was perfect and excatly what I wanted. The outter envelopes were also printed. Everyone has that thing that's really important to them, for some reason, it was my invitations, so I didn't mind the extra cost.

I had mine done at Vistaprint, as well. For 60 invitations, RSVP's, Address labels for both, postcard sized save-the-date magnets, envelopes for all, matching 2 inch round stickers for 200 favors, postage, and a new good calligraphy pen and ink ( I did my own calligraphy in both English and Chinese) I spent just under $200.00. Using Vistaprint was easy, and left time for me to do other fun DIY projects for my wedding. I went with their designer collection. At the end of the day, most people do throw them out, but you will keep one for your wedding album, and your parents might keep one. A bit of advice, envelope size and weight is VERY IMPORTANT. Have one weighed at the post office, mail it to yourself before sending out the others to make sure it goes through all right. My girlfriend didn't, and hers came back ruined with big PO stamps on them. Good luck with everything!
  • Thank you everyone for all of your help! My fiance and I have an idea of the price point we would like to keep our invites at.

  • I bought a kit from Party City (online more options then in store) that had a 5x7 invite, rsvp card & envelope & one envelope to send it all in. It was $20.00 for 50 invites ($.40 per invite). Yes I wanted nice invites, but I faced the reality that people are just going to throw them away the day after the wedding so why spend a ton of money on them. Also by not doing lots of extra inserts or anything thick or heavy I saved a ton on postage. Not counting the stamp I put on the RSVP envelope, I only had to pay $.47 per invite to mail (the cost of a forever stamp). I did make my own business cards that had our wedding website address and put on there "for hotel details, directions and more wedding information, check out our website at ...."

  • We are ordering 70-75 invites from a vendor. They will be around $360. Its a simple classic invite with formal printing and paper.

I am currently consiering whether or not to use a calligrapher

We're getting ours through Invites Weddings (online). Lost of customizable options in suites. They will also print your return address on the RSVP return envelopes for free. The invites, response cards, and thank you cards (110 quantity) are costing us $200 total.
