Soup Choice and Entree Choice

Short and sweet:

Would you side eye having beef and barley soup before having your entree in which you were able to choose between chicken and beef?

My mom is telling me not to do it, that it's the end of the world but I don't see the problem.

Re: Soup Choice and Entree Choice

  • The only issue you may run into with the soup is that you may not have beef eaters.  My MIL eats only poultry so her soup would go to waste.

But for a beef lover (like myself) I wouldn't side eye it at all.

But I would maybe consider the heft of the soup.  You don't want to serve a super heavy soup and then a full out entree...may just be too much hearty stuff going on you know?

  • I don't see a problem with this. I don't believe I've ever been given a soup option for a sit-down meal.

Is there a vegetarian entree option? What kind of soup would those orders come with?

  • Oh you two are so smart. I'll have to e-mail my venue and ask them to be sure about the vegetarians and stuff :)
  • Eh, I wouldn't side-eye it. I mean, the only soup I've ever been served at a wedding was a mushroom soup. I don't eat mushrooms. However, you can't please everyone.

That being said, you should definitely make sure you have a vegetarian option available as well.

  • That's a lot of heavy and meat-laden food.  Usually I see soup first courses that are lighter--gazpacho in the summer, butternut squash in the fall....  Or cream based like lobster or tomato bisque.

Beef and barley soup is what I eat when I spent more than I meant to during the month, it's the 29th, and I'm at my desk eating soup from a can for lunch.  It's hefty enough to be satisfying for a meal and cheap since I can open can, pour into bowl, and eat.  It's one of the more unglamorous things I can think of.

Is there a prettier solution?  Tomato bisques have a pretty, bright red color and are vegetarian but not vegan.  Butternut squash soup is veg if not made with chicken stock, and it has a pretty, rich color.  Either can be garnished in an aesthetically appealing manner--a dollup of creme fraiche or sour cream and herbs.  Both are light.

After beef and barley soup and a meat entree, I'd want to go home and rub my belly not party.  That's a lot of heavy food.

    Think on it.

And take a look--which is prettier?

  • I called my venue and she said absolutely they'd have a vegetarian alternative.  That being said, the beef and barley is the only one FI and I liked. We don't have to decide today, so we'll think about it.

I would go with taste over pretty ALL DAY. EVERY DAY. Regardless of the heaviness of the soup or how it looks in a bowl, taste is always most important. I think you're fine with beef barley.

I had originally had my heart set on a broccoli and cheese soup but it was NOT good. I was salty and more broccoli and no cheese and I was just super disappointing.
  • That being said, the beef and barley is the only one FI and I liked.

If that's the only soup you liked, I'm not sure why you're asking for opinions since you've already made up your mind.   I think it's too heavy and it's not pretty.  You don't.  That's fine--it's your wedding.

I can't say I've ever sat down to a really elegant meal and had beef and barley soup or any other stew type thing put in front of me.  But maybe that's not the look you're going for.  Maybe it's more homestyle than elegant.  Regardless, if you don't want opinions contrary to beef and barley, don't ask for them.
  • I just don't like rustic or homestyle soups like that. I also don't really care for stews or curries. But I'd probably eat most of them with the exception of split pea or beef and barley. Ick. It's like the worst of the worst for me.

So, yea, you can't please everyone all the time, but that's my vote.
  • Honestly, I'd rather have the choice between soup or a salad (i'd pick a salad every time)

They're getting soup and salad :)
  • Personally I do think it's odd and on the heavy side.  Especially when you the are having salads and an entree and I assume apps at cocktail hour.

I would go back and say you didn't like the broccoli soup and what the issues were.  Then ask if they could make it a differently. Or even a different soup altogether that is on the lighter side.    DH has had people ask him for a re-do on an item or ask him for suggestion on other choice.    NBD

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Can you do a different appetizer instead of the soup?  I agree w/ others.....it's very heavy to be serving right before a full meal (and perhaps after a cocktail hour?)

soup would be my last choice for a app do you get a pasta choice in addition to the appitizer or is pasta one of the choices besides soup

this was my menu for my june 2014 wedding

    cheese and veg table

passed hot appz scallops wrapped in bacon, clams casino, stuffed breads, Bruschetta on crustini, and stuffed mushrooms

    dinner was sit down.

tossed salad with choice of italian or creamy italian dressing
tomato and mozzarella slice  with basil oil
baked cheese manicotti and meatballs  (meatballs were served family style )
    main entres were
twin stuffed lobster tails with mixed italian veg and oven roasted potatoes
chicken francise lightly breaded chicken in a lemon butter sauce italian mixed veg and oven roasted potatoes
prime rib italian mixed and roasted potatoes
and the veg option was eggplant parm

cake was a vanilla with a chocolate mouse filling and buttercream on the outside with an ice cream puff on the side  ( just a fancy way to freeze and make the ice cream)

i think the soup will be way to much of a filler food and messy think about how many times you eat soup and it spills on you,  after the soup your guest wont want to eat dinner
  • I think the bigger problem with the soup is that it's soup - not that it's beef and you have a beef entree.

I love me some soup and make a big pot every week.  But beef and barley is fall/winter, make a big batch in the crockpot, bring it to work in my thermos soup.  It's not the kind of thing I'd really expect or want at a wedding.

I tried looking through your posts, but couldn't tell when your wedding is.  If there's no snow on the ground on your wedding date, I would nix the soup altogether.  And if your wedding reception isn't in my living room where I would normally be in sweats, watching TV, and eating beef and barley soup then I would also nix the soup.  I'd ask if you can substitute something else - get an extra app for cocktail hour if you're having one or something similar.

  • Soup would be good but don't have a heavy meal/entree

  • I would personally go with a salad instead of a soup. Good luck!
