Getting in Shape

Self-concious about running on the treadmill.

I really want to do intervals at the gym on the treadmill but I feel really self-concious. I used to do it at our old apt gym because I was by myself. I know I shouldnt feel like that because we are all there for the same reason but I just feel really wierd. Anyone else feel like this when you first started? I just feel self-concious about everything ( classes, running, weights) but I feel even more like that towards running.

  • I'm with raynes.  Intervals are awesome.

Honestly, the only people I really judge at the gym are the girls who read magazines and chat on the phone while lazily going through the motions on the ellipticals.  If I saw someone doing intervals on a treadmill (even if they looked a little silly), I'd still think they were awesome for pushing themselves through such a tough workout.

Seriously, just do it!  After a workout or two, you wont' feel so self-conscious anymore.

  • Great things come out of awkward situations.  I always have to remind myself of that.  If I hadn't gone on an awkward blind date, I wouldn't have met the man of my dreams and getting married in two months.  If I hadn't tried running with the cross country team in high school even though I had never run more than 2 miles, I never would have fallen in love with exercise.  Just remind yourself how awesome this is going to be for you and that awkwardness shouldn't keep you from doing things that are totally worth it.

Add to that, those who set it on an impossible incline and hang off the top of the TM.

  • lol. Thanks girls. I think I will try doing intervals tonite and see how I do. If I get too uncomfortable I can easily just stop but I will never know till I try it. Thanks girls. You helped alot. I just gotta realize that no one is gonna make fun of me and if they do that is their fault because I am trying to better myself.

  • You should totally try it and not worry about it.  I've never had anyone tell me anything even close to making fun of me at the gym and I know I'm a freak.  Think of Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading, waving my arms, dancing and singing. haha.  If people see me and don't say anything then I'm sure they won't say anything to you.

I never got self-conscious about the treadmill, but at my university the way the gym was set up, there was the pool on the bottom floor and then all the cardio equipment was set up on the next floor up, with giant glass windows/walls and all the machines facing the pool. So basically everyone in the gym was looking down at the pool. The weight rooms were on either side of the pool deck with only glass partitions, so swimming was like being in a fishbowl with everyone watching you. It made me a little self-conscious at first, but then when I thought about it, when i was up there I really wasn't paying that much attention to the swimmers so no one else would really pay much attention to me. And if they did, they would probably just be jealous cause I have a nice ass. So basically, what I'm saying is ignore everyone else, since they probably don't care anyway.

  • Ditto to what everyone said!  I feel uncomfortable running outdoors down public streets for that reason, but at the gym I don't mind--that's what we are all there for, to get sweaty and work our butts off.

Yeah, my university rec center has a few girls who manage to go to the gym, trot on the treadmill forever and still look amazing in their booty shorts and hooters tank tops.  But then, they are usually there to pick up cute frat guys.  I am engaged, and am there so that I feel sexy and in shape on my honeymoon!  I'd rather look awkward in front of them if it means I look amazing later as a result!!

    Keep at it!!
  • You got it Nebb.  I'm a raging biitch.

  • I totally understand how you feel. I am by no means a "runner" but I do run at least 3 times a week now. When I first started, I felt very self conscious, like everyone's eyes were on me. Now I use that feeling to push myself further! Try going an extra lap or an extra minute and show everyone what you're made of! :-)

I also used to just stare at all the super fit, tiny girls running on the treadmil in complete jealousy and awe.. but lately I've been telling myself that that's what I'm going to look like some day!

Turn those negative thoughts around and think about how much good you are doing for your body! You can do it!
  • Jenny- Never thought of it that way. I do wanna be able to put on a bathing suit & not feel totally discusted.

    AJ- Good point.

I am going to try it today and see how it goes.

  • I was a bit intimidated by all the people going 9 mph for 30 mins and not breaking a sweat at first, too.  But I *love* doing intervals on the treadmill, and I feel like I push myself a lot more than some of the other people I see every day.  I lost all worries the day I fell off the treadmill, though.  I got a nice burn from the experience, but I just hopped back on and after about 10 seconds, no one was looking anymore.  I hope your intervals went well last night!
