Cashing checks?

I was just wondering if there is a certain amount of time you are supposed to wait before you cash checks you receive as gifts.  We went to a wedding over a month ago, and our check still hasn't been cashed.  Also, we went to a wedding in May and they didn't cash our check until August.  I don't know if I would feel comfortable holding on to that much money for so long! Thanks

Re: Cashing checks?

  • We cashed ours right after we came back from the honeymoon, so no more than 2 weeks after the wedding. Just write 'For Deposit Only' on the back with one of your account #s, and you can deposit them before you change your name and get a joint account.

  • Should be ASAP but it sounds like they're waiting until her name is changed legally.  Ugh, that's annoying because some of us are really particular about our check registers.

  • We cashed ours when we came back from the HM. Some were made out to "Meredith and Oliver Hislastname." I had H endorse them, but was told he needed to come in person (we don't have a joint account, we were depositing them in my account). So we both went to the bank on a Saturday, 2 weeks after the wedding, and cashed them. I think it's polite to cash them ASAP.
