High School Reunion

Re: High School Reunion

  • My ten year was last Thanksgiving but FI and I (we went to HS together) attended a friend's wedding instead -- the couple who got married also went to our HS so it was a bit of a mini reunion.

Anyway, it sounds like it was pretty funny from social media posts. A few people went really early (aka: right on time) and sat around waiting for everyone else for an hour or so. They were posting pictures of the empty bar and of each other asking where our class was and if the reunion had been canceled! Then an hour or so later a new wave of people showed up, people who went out to dinner first. An hour after that, more people showed up, the people who went out for dinner and drinks first. It sounds like there was some sloppy drunks -- namely the people from HS who had once been straight-laced and who were now trying to show their old classmates that they can hang. One girl apparently fell off her barstool and had to get escorted into a cab.

  • I went to mine. It was fun! Re-bonded with a girl I'd known since kindergarten. It wasn't expensive and the planner had our senior class video playing on loop. That was funny. I know someone who went to hers and re-bonded with an old crush. They are now married. You never know!!

At our 5 year reunion, a couple we went to HS with started something up. They got married the same day as our 10 year reunion (which is why I didn't go to my 10 year). You do indeed never know.

  • My 5 year reunion just passed. It was horribly planned. The group that organized it was very cliquey in high school and while nice, they were pretty good at excluding people. That showed when they sent out invites for the reunion. I didn't know until less than a week before and declined when I did receive an invite. Plus, I was just a year out of college and it was about $80 per ticket and I would still have to pay for the bar so I was not interested. I don't think I'll go to my 10 year. I was picked on a lot and I did not stay in touch with anyone from high school and I really don't feel like putting in the effort to try and reconnect with anyone from the 400 plus graduating class. Not trying to sound like a jerk, just don't really care.

  • I didn't go to my 5 year. It was Thanksgiving weekend and the same day as my grandfather's second funeral. Plus it was cheap, since there wasn't money to invite SOs. I may go to my 10th in a couple years, depending on how well it is planned.
  • I had said I wouldn't go to my 10 year because I felt I kept in touch with those that I wanted to. BUT THEN 2 of my good friends (who were the president and vice president) suckered me into helping them plan it (who am I kidding I love planning parties!)

It was stressful and a lot of work to plan, but totally worth it. The event went great! Everyone had a blast and can't wait for the next one and those who missed it were commenting on pictures after about how they wished they went! There was an after party at the hotel bar after and then I guess an after after party in one of the hotel rooms... I barely made it to the first after party though!

  • I was homeschooled so this is what a reunion would look like for me.

:p  I probably won't go to my college reunion.  I didn't have a ton of friends in college that were my same year, so I don't see the point.
  • 5-year reunions are just a bad idea all around. Nobody is really established in life yet and people are still hanging on to stupid HS bullshit.
  • I just got the info for my 20 year reunion. $125.00 for dinner, cash bar, a bio book and nametags at a run down hotel near the airport.  That's a big "NO".
  • Did DF's 10 year two years ago, and last I knew, there wasn't anyone in charge of planning mine for next year. But as the likely planners include the one who has asked why I am just a teacher, I don't plan on attending anyway.

My husband's at one this weekend.  His uncle died in British Columbia, where he lived.  They had a funeral there for his friends and family.  Now they're having an internment service in Manitoba, where he is to be buried.

So this is NOT an occasion where we say "you get one day!"

Sorry for your husband's loss. :-(

Thank you :)  It wasn't expected, but not NOT-expected at the same time, if that makes any sense.

Similar to this. My Grandfather lived the last 20ish years of his life in Baton Rouge, so his first funeral was there soon after he died. About a month or so later the second one was up in the Detroit suburb where he lived most of his life and where his first wife was buried. Well, she was cremated (so was he), so whatever the technical term for it is in this case. So there was another ceremony. And there was plenty of family drama at both.
