PSA - karaoke at a reception = bad idea

My cousin's reception is today.  They have karaoke going.  Other cousin's wife (SIL to the married one) is posting video of the karaoke on FB.  It's bad y'all.  I couldn't listen to more than a few seconds of any of them.

My parents flew back for the reception and I can't wait to hear the stories from them when they get home.

Re: PSA - karaoke at a reception = bad idea

  • Karaoke is embarrassing enough. Thanks to youtube and fb there is no way I'm ever doing karaoke in public.

  • LOL! Wish you could post the videos here for us to "enjoy" haha
  • Oooooooooh boy. Karaoke at a wedding to me is like people think their guests will get bored. Yes, to an extent, you are there to entertain your guests, but it's not a kid's birthday party. They don't need fifty million activities. They can entertain themselves.

Dear Lord that is horrible. We told the DJ to cut the mic no matter who had it after the BM and MOH.

    <div>That sounds <em>amazing</em>. </div><div>
</div><div>A fellow July bride had an open mic at her reception, but her guest-performers had to sign up ahead of time with the song they wanted to do. That's probably a smarter alternative for those who really, really want live (potentially unrehearsed) amateur music.</div>
  • Holy cripes. That is just frightening.

Yes, yes it was. But it ended up with DH and I getting together we weren't even dating yet, so it worked out. He leaned over and said "so you won't mind if I sleep with her then? Because she's gorgeous." My hero! Posted by StageManager14[/QUOTE]

Best response. Thank ex for getting you two together!

Your DH sounds amazing. Snaps for him!
  • Stage, i hate the beginning of your story but love the ending!

I just realized (as I was getting rid of things and ran across the invitation to cousin's reception) that they did in fact solicit requests.  That doesn't mean the people who signed up are any good though.

My cousin on the other side did an open mic.  However, since she and her H are professional musicians, you can imagine the boatload of talent they had at their wedding.

I can only see that being meh if it wasn't a small reception since I imagine it would make people self conscious and nobody would know each other very well.

We did a karaoke meet and greet for the wedding in LV's Koreatown and it was such a blast AND cost effective.  In Asia we sing in private booths with a party of people over snacks and drinks; it's often the thing to do for corporate parties and anyone from kids to grandparents generally enjoy it.  We wanted to incorporate some culture into our wedding events and that was one way we easily could.  We had about 15 in attendance and really, there were no good singers in our group but we had good drinks and good food and it was hilarious anyways.

Would I post it on FB?  Well, no.  Doesn't make much sense since the people watching probably wouldn't be half tipsy and surrounded by the same mood to appreciate our offkey shenanigans.
  • mizuta, I assume this wasn't small since it was the second half of a tiered reception.  I know they did karaoke at another cousin's reception, but it was a super small wedding, maybe 15 people?  I could see it going over much better in a group like that where everyone knows each other well and it's more of a mix and mingle, cocktail type reception.  From what I can see in the video of tonight's reception, the singers were on stage with a mic and everyone else was sitting at dinner tables watching.

Yes, I am judging my cousin hardcore.
  • I had wanted to do karaoke for my coctail hour.  My husband vetoed that.  Guess he was right *Sigh*

Yeah, that kind of sounds a little harsh then, especially on the chance they were "force-encouraging" guests to get up and sing.  Also I find in Western karaoke people have no idea how to read the crowd as far as karaoke selections go... Karaoke with a group is more about singing what people know and will feel good jamming/singing along with instead of your personal favorites.
  • Horrible idea.  This sounds like something you see at a trailer park wedding.

A good DJ with great song selection doesn't need to offer karaoke.  It's just trashy no matter where it is.
