The 2 siblings of Anna's who left the "cult" are asking her to leave Josh and willing to help her get out.     Sadly their parents are wanting her to stay and forgive.
The other issue for Anna is, where will she go?   How will she make ends meet?   And how will she be able to stand up to the pressure that is the Duggar Family?

I have to imagine that Anna is stuck.   She's not educated, believes that she's her husband's property and aside from the TV show, I don't think she has a way to make a living to support her kids.   And that's so tough for her.   Her world is crumbling down in front of her.

I think she's going to stay and loving her husband may have something to do with it.   Not being able to survive away from him will have far more to do with it though.

I agree. I'm betting she also doesn't have enough world/life experience to understand what her options are. They've been raised in such a tightly controlled environment that she probably has no sense of what she could do if she left him.

Her position is terrifying to me. Uneducated, no work experience, 4 children. She probably doesn't even have credit or a bank account on her own. Her minivan is probably in her husband's name and she probably doesn't have any family who would take her in. She's pretty solidly stuck.

ETA: I got the options bit wrong. I hadn't read the MSN article yet. Sorry!

Anyone else curious if/when any of the women he cheated with will come forward? I'd love to hear their take.

Count me as one that does not respect the Duggars religion and feels it actively hurts people. And I'm not even just confining that to all the hateful anti LGBTQ stuff they've done- it hurts children when you raise them in that kind of environment and it hurts women when you give them no voice or control over their own bodies, EVEN TO THE POINT THAT THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SAY NO TO SEX WITH THEIR HUSBANDS. That is rape, and if you don't think that's hurtful, GTFO.
QFT. As a Christian I am ashamed that these people claim to share the same faith as me. I truly believe this family has raised their children in a cult. I have no respect for this family whatsoever. They are sick.

ETA- I would also like to hear the stories of the women he cheated on his wife with.

Me too.  As a christian, I don't think a lot of their beliefs are authentic at all.  I can't stand the brainwashing they've done, especially in forcing the daughters/women of the family into these subservient roles.

To the bolded-- she may not have enough world/life experience to even realize she SHOULD leave. Maybe she doesn't want to leave. It's her fault he cheated because she wasn't serving him well enough, right? She should have been a better wife. Now she needs to ask god for guidance and repentance and serve her husband better. His sins should be forgiven because he said he's sorry, and he's only a man.

She's probably so brainwashed that after everything he's done, it still doesn't even occur to her that she's in a bad marriage with a bad person and needs to get out.

It took me YEARS to realize that I was in an abusive relationship, because I had an abusive dad so that's what I grew up with, so it's normal. There's nothing wrong with being slammed against the wall and threatened. That's what men do, right?
    image
  • Abuse comes in so many forms and even educated women sometimes can't recognize they're being abused.

I was in a mentally abusive relationship with a man who stalked me and manipulated me for three years before I realized what was really going on. It took waking up to find him in jail after driving drunk following me around town to realize that he was stalking me and that something was wrong. It was another year before I finally left him- he was beginning to exhibit signs of physical abuse and that was my wake-up call.

It's amazing what we can justify under the premise of "he only does it because he loves me". I was told so many times "I wouldn't have to follow you if I felt like I could trust you" and "It's your fault that I have to look through your phone" etc.....because it's always the victim's fault.

I hope for Anna that someone who loves her gets her out of this awful situation. Josh will do this again because he has never suffered the consequences of his actions.

This.  I was in an an abusive / controlling relationship for almost 5 years before I got my wake-up call.  Looking back, it is crystal clear.  In the moment, with work and taking care of our apartment, etc. it never occurred to me.

rehab.  What kind of rehab?  Certainly not an accredited one right?   They are not allowed to associate with non-believers right?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

It was in a statement from the family so they didn't say.

It's just such a "celebrity" thing to do to try to get their credit back!  Pretty laughable.

If it's anything like the "therapy" he received after abusing his sisters I imagine he'll be at lumberjack school, or a Habitat for Humanity build.

Yeah, okay.  I'm guessing more construction?  Build a house or pool???
This bothers me so much!!!!!!!!!! I am getting my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy, so admittedly I am a little biased. But I cannot fathom how the Duggars (or anyone else for that matter) could possibly think that "rehab" or "counseling" consists of helping a family friend with construction. I also do not believe that meeting with a pastor or elder of the church counts as counseling.

What Josh Duggar needs is to sit down with a licensed mental health professional. The things he has done are signs of someone with a serious problem.

I know a few counselors who do feel that meeting a pastor or elder of the church would equate to counseling. I can't believe it, but I do. Granted, I'm a counselor in Texas so that may add to some of it. I have a "friend" that recently finished her masters in MFT and works in religious centers only so she doesn't have to counsel homosexual couples. GAG.

Exactly.  Incorporating your faith into your therapy is a good thing.  But it still needs to be therapy... from a licensed professional.  Not just building a house or some bull crap.  Or just hoping to pray it away.  God wants us to use the resources available to us, not just hope it will go away if we believe hard enough.

I should have clarified. I completely agree with this statement. I just think their idea of "counseling" is so wrong. There is a big difference between seeking out faith based counseling with a LPC and doing construction or meeting with a pastor.

Edited for clarity because I can't process thoughts today :)

Do they have rehab for assholes? I'm sure he's at their cult's (ATI) training center and certainly not getting any kind of real therapy. If only Anna would get some counseling, that's who I feel for in this whole debacle.
  • This is from a freejinger.org poster about his 'rehab".

Ok, I think the Christian Rehab place is just a big money grab off of all the free labour from 100 people (all of them working six days a week for six months for free, or if it is paid the money clearly goes to Reformers Unanimous and not the individual working six days a week).

    Quote from the rehab-wannabe website:

"Each student will serve as a volunteer in some fashion from 8-10 hours per day, and partial days on Saturdays. All work is considered donated services. Please understand that if you do not work as unto the Lord, you will not remain in the home. Proverbs 14:23 says, “in all labor there is profit” at Reformers Unanimous we believe work is God’s divine design for every man, and woman. Hard work develops character which is vital to making right decisions once you have finished with the program."

Ugh.  My SIL's now-XH went to one of these to "treat" his alcoholism.  I never really did understand how doing landscaping and painting parking lots (like the stripes that divide the spaces and stuff) was supposed to treat an alcohol addiction.  I guess if had been paired with actual treatment from licensed counselors, it couldn't have hurt, but there was no actual counseling.  They were very clear about "The ministry does not offer treatment, but it does offer the cure! Jesus Christ is the answer."   More like a way for the people running the place to hire out cheap labor and keep the proceeds.

LSS, manual labor and praying alone did not treat his addiction, things got worse, and SIL left him and took their two young kids (3 and <1 at the time).  I really don't know how these places exist, or why you would choose one.

Not sure why you'd have sex/help this guy cheat then. Money talks, but to sound so righteous after is kind of.. off.

There are legitimate religious based mental hospitals, rehabs, and treatment options.  Ones where you are working with licensed professionals and the focus is on getting the medical help you need, but they include religion as a large part of your recovery process, which isn't a bad thing.  I'm not religious, but I have seen religion play a big role in helping people overcome problems and I have known people that have been treated in legitimate faith based mental health programs.

But, if he's going into "treatment" like he did as a kid, where he's not actually getting any real help, then it's a bunch of BS.  Manual labor does not equal treatment. I suspect that they wouldn't want the influence of people that don't have their exact beliefs, so I doubt he's getting the help he really needs.

I'm kind of in this camp too.  So he doesn't deserve happines and you wish for him to be lonely and bitter.  But you'll take his money.  I don't know.  Unless you've been living under a rock, how did you not know who he was?  I don't even have cable and I know who he is!

It's not her responsibility to prevent him from cheating- that's all on him.  But if you really, truly, have a problem with it, why would you offer to help someone make it possible?  I think smoking is gross; when I had friends in college ask for money to buy cigarettes, I said no.  Yep, they probably got it from someone else, but not from me.
