Wedding Woes

Wednesday

What's up?

M2 is 6 today.  We're going to open bounce at a gymnastics place (so I can also check it out for fall) and getting cupcakes and going out to dinner.  I hate Red Robin.  Why do the kids have to like it so much?

Because I know you're all dying to know. My neighborhood actually came out pretty well in the redistricting.  We keep our elementary but have to move middle and high school.  There are a couple places that got shafted big time. A few very, very rich neighborhoods got put in the "old school" with all of the "poors" and THEY ARE PISSED.  (I'm a poor)

Re: Wednesday

  • Congrats on the school assignment, glad it worked out.

    My mom called yesterday evening.  My grandma passed away around 5:45.  To my surprise, she wanted to be cremated.  (I didn't think old school Catholics believed in cremation, although I think that's changed more recently.  But she was 100, and definitely pretty old school.  And also, I'm the furthest thing from an expert.)  So she will be cremated in Florida, and then her ashes will be buried in Chicago, next to my grandfather.  (Who died when my mom was just a kid, so obviously I never met him.  Which makes it feel weird to say "my grandfather" even though that's exactly who he was.)

    They're going to hold off on the interment until my mom finishes radiation in a few weeks, since she already took some time off to be with my grandma.  So if the timing works, we might be able to do it during spring break.  If it had been this week, DH and I had discussed me going solo because there is so much going on with the kids this week.  It made sense, but I think I'd rather us all go, if it doesn't turn everything upside down.  And during spring break, it wouldn't.  No school (Wooz has her big field trip for the year this week), no soccer, and I don't really care if they miss a week of swim and riding.

    And in slightly entertaining fashion, while my mom was in Florida, she and my aunt met with the crematorium to make arrangements, choose an urn, and all that.  Since they're flying to Chicago (and they're not about to check my grandma's ashes), the crematorium guy said they'd need a TSA-approved urn.  Which is not anything I had ever given any thought to.  The ones that they liked were all pewter, silver, mother of pearl, etc. and definitely not TSA approved.  So the crematorium guy suggested "a heavy duty cardboard box and double bagging" to get her ashes through security, and then they could transfer them to the burial urn at their destination.  Even over the phone, I could hear the face my mom was making as she said "heavy duty cardboard box and double bagging."  Instead, they bought a simple wooden urn for the flight, and a nicer one for burial that they can check.

    @Heffalump I am so sorry for your loss.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss @Heffalump, it's good your Mom got to spend some time with her.
  • Happy Birthday, M2!

    Re: redistricting, your town might be looking for a way to renovate the "old school" - and one easy way to do this is through property taxes. You may end up with a newly renovated state-of-the-art school as a result! Do people have to switch middle and high schools mid-year? Or do these changes go into effect at the beginning of the next school year?

    Yesterday's storm was overly hyped. We only got 5"-6", most of which froze overnight. Luckily H went out early yesterday evening with the snowblower to clear the driveway, paths, and sidewalks or else we would be chiseling everything out this morning! So far I am the only one in my department here and I have the longest commute. I'm wondering how many people didn't pay attention to the weather yesterday and are stuck in the ice today.

    Many of the school districts here have either cancelled for today or have 90 -minute to 2-hour delays, so my drive in was relatively traffic free!
  • Glad the redistricting work @6fsn; you're in Ohio right? A few of the school districts around here (I'm in Toledo) are going through the same thing now and there are the same "concerns".

    Thanks for all the good thoughts (and margarita pictures yesterday), I'm still bummed, trying to work on a plan, and really figure out what I want to do. We both really want to move back home, now it's a matter of figuring what it is I actually want to do (rather than what I have been doing forever).

    Also, it's damn cold here today.

    @sparklepants41 I don't foresee any renovations when they are finishing the fourth high school this summer and there will probably be a 5th soon.  The change is for the 2018-19 school year.  So no midyear but some kids will go to 6/7 grade at one school switch for 8th then again to high and some will have to switch for Jr Sr year.  That will suck since not all high schools have the same programs

    @charlotte989875 yes I'm in Ohio.

    I'm so sorry @Heffalump.  LOL @ your mom's TSA-double-bagging conundrum.

    Happy birthday M2!!!  :) I'm pretty sure we're going to be doing re-districting sooner than later.  It's probably going to be a mess here too.

    I'm watching This is Us right now. I'm trying to avoid the thread until I'm done.  ;)

    I woke up pretty cranky this morning (which my children didn't help, at all), but now that I've had breakfast and coffee, my mood is getting better.

    It's been less than a week and I'm already tired of it being cold.   The bus stop sucks.
  • Thanks everyone.

    Also, I completely missed the part about M2's birthday today.  Happy birthday, M2!
  • Oh, @Heffalump. I am so sorry for your loss. Hugs for you and your family.

    I thought so, I was curious if there were state-wide efforts to redistrict, or it just so happened they were occurring at the same time. Only a few districts are going through the process around here, but I'm seeing a lot of the same issues you've posted about, mainly wealthy parents not wanting their kids to go to "old" schools. FTR, I'm neither a parent, nor wealthy.

    It's not statewide just coincidence. Our area is growing incredibly fast and it's hard to keep up.
  • @Heffalump, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother.

    @mrsconn23, I've been tempted by the "This Is Us" thread also.  But I'm being strong and waiting until I get caught up.

    Work yesterday was nicely busy.  Today, I will not be so lucky.  A long, boring day is stretched out before me.

    Here's a negative of going on vacation.  I got home from work last night.  My H and I make sad faces to each other as we realize there is no food in the house.  Our resolve to eat lighter and more healthy after pigging out on vacation, had already dissolved in less than 24 hours as we headed over to the Domino's Pizza website, lol.

  • @6fsn  Happy bday M2!

    @Heffalump  Sorry to hear about your grandma <3

    Avoiding all the "This is Us" stuff. I already knew about one thing everyone expected that didn't happen, but nothing else. I saw a clip on fb and I was crying a minute in. I feel this will be emotional regardless what pans out ...

    Had a chat with M last night. Told him that he needs to pull his weight more, because I can't do everything. This includes when he's back at work. I explained I just feel really angry when I get home and he's been home and nothing is done.
    Hopefully shit will change.

    Weather this morning suckssssss! I bribed M with buying breakfast so he'd drive me. Unfortunately, breakfast is not settling in my stomach very well so I think need to stop ordering it. {McD breakfast burritos. I'm thinking it's the eggs - I can't eat breakfast sandwiches with eggs, but I could make eggs at home. So idk ...}

    Half of me is hoping my boss closes the office early so we can leave, but I doubt that'd happen *side eye*
  • Morning!

    @heffalump I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma.  I'm glad there is flexibility in the schedule for your mom though!

    WFH today to catch up on quotes and debating stopping in the office for a minute to confront someone.  I've been super stressed over this mistake I made, and working hard to fix it.  Most people would just let other people fix it for them.  Yesterday, when finalizing the last piece, a manager (that my customers have been complaining about) said "well if you did it right the first time, we wouldn't have to worry about this."  Normally I would pop off at something like that, but I was too tired so I side eyed him, thanked his employee for helping and left.

    His boss was one of the people he said it in front of, and he came and apologized to me and told me he pulled him into the office and told him he is never to speak to anyone that way.  I may stop in so I can tell him myself that his comment was inappropriate and out of line.

  • @Heffalump I am so sorry for your loss. :(

    @6fsn happy birthday M2!! I'm glad all the redistricting worked out well.

    Morning all. Not much going on here today. It is freezing outside- I think it got down to 20 last night. And it's supposed to be back up in the mid 60's by the weekend. Ugh. My sinuses hate this weather.

    DH and I had a long chat last night. I'm so stressed and miserable at work, plus worrying about our finances and wondering if we will *ever* be in a good place where we can take vacations, go out to dinner, etc. He was so sweet about it. He kept saying something positive every time I said something negative, which pissed me off in the moment. It was just what I needed to hear though! I miss him. I'm going request some days off and plan a trip to see him soon.

  • @thefanciestbeckler  I feel you on the sinuses :( Stupid weather.
    Also prob doesn't help you and your H aren't together often :( Go visit, it will help <3 Idk if you budget, but there's a few sites I can suggest that helped me get a grip on spending/saving/budgeting/etc
  • Ladies, do any of your spouses have a "man cave" {blegh!} I hate calling it a man cave, but essentially that's what our basement will be. I call it the 'den' or 'entertainment room' but it will be where M plays video games, handles his firearms, does electronics, etc etc etc.
    It's also where the washer/dryer are, so he'll be doing laundry.

    As for decor though, I want it more masculine. M's more outdoorsy but I don't want to do that stupid trend 'rustic' - but it works. But it's trendy. Guhhh .... decor ideas?
    {Note: M has said I can decorate if I want, he doesn't care as long as it's "not girly" I want to do stuff that's more 'him' oriented.}

    DH is trying to turn our bonus room into his 'man cave' (it's currently a giant toy room with a table and couch in it).  But he's not interested in my assistance in decorating it, LOL.  Currently, we have some Colts stuff up in there and he's got a second amendment (giant ::eyeroll::) plaque thing he found at Hobby Town or something.  He also has a Captain Morgan plaque that might go up in there and my dad gave me a painting his college roommate did of Jimi Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland" cover that may go up in there too.

    But if he decorates his man cave before hanging the rest of our wall-hangings that I've been asking him to do for-ev-er, he may just need to make it his bedroom.  ;) j/k (kind of...mostly :D

    M's got a few posters, and we're putting my dad's old {deactivated} guns on the wall with the deer head also.

    I swear, if the basement gets finished before other things get done that should be priority he'll be living in the basement also {also kinda-sorta-maybe joking lol}

    hahahahahaah  a man cave. hahahahahh  The room that was supposed to be my office is Max's bedroom.  I have a table in the family room.  If he did have his own space he'd be responsible for finding stuff for it.  I have walls and walls with nothing on them.

    Dark woods, and black/grey/burgundy or navy/grey/hunter green are some more "masculine" palettes. As for wall decor, how about sports memorabilia, photos of the outdoors, etc?

    My H has been talking about turning our garage (which was built in 1928 and is too small to fit a car from today, unless it's a SmartCar or Mini Cooper lol) into a "man-cave" for a while now. It's electrified and would be easy for us to add heat. I collected license plates in HS and college and he's excited to hang those up in the garage as "wall decor." We have an old black leather couch in there now for days when we are grilling/smoking meat/cheese and want a comfy place to sit.

    I like your idea of hanging the deer head in his cave and the deactivated guns as well.

    Me too.  And DH's whole argument about turning our bonus room into his 'man cave' is that I have my office and he has no space for himself.

    First of all, I'm never in my office except to work.  I maybe would spend more time in here if there was a TV, but there's not.  Andplusalso, the office is a damn tax-break because I work from home and it's dedicated for that only.

    You man cave sure as shit isn't going to make me any money...just cost money.  ;)

    But once DefConn is older, the bonus room is probably going to evolve itself into a bar/game room for entertaining.  We don't have a TV in there yet, but that's on our list (upgrading the living room TV and moving the current TV to the bonus room).

    Same! M keeps calling it that but I hate it. Hence why I call it 'entertainment room' or 'den'

    I keep telling M I hope we have a girl because there's no way in fuck he'll be saying 'no girls' lmfao!

    We currently have an office also {3 bedroom house - one room ours, one dedicated to future kid's room and 3rd is office for now} but if we decide on 2 kids, then that office is in the basement also.
  • @MissKittyDanger I do budget. Right now it's just a matter of getting some debts paid off. We will be golden after that happens.

    Re: man cave. Our basement is DH's "man cave". Really it's just a place for him to play video games  without hogging the main tv. Lol. He actually has a pretty good eye for design so he decorated it himself. The town he's from hosted part of the Olympics in the 90's and he was given a bunch of flags from it. Those are framed and hanging up. He wants to get some airplane paraphernalia to hang up at some point too.

    I keep thinking greys also, because the couch we're getting is a light grey.

    I suggested the deer head and guns because that way it's a conversation piece AND if we have kids, they'll see the history of my family also :) Hopefully ask questions {we'll explain at some point, but I'm hoping they'd ask before we opt to bring it up}
  • @MissKittyDanger we do, but we don't call it that either.  H is a HUGE sports memorabilia collector so having a space to display his things was a must on his list.  He handled the decor for the most part, and did a nice job.  We have autographed e'erythang down there, from jerseys to balls to helmets.  Mixed in with all of that are some cool photos, old and new.

    The "woman cave" is in the kitchen and laundry room, obviously! Isn't that where you go to relax and unwind? The house H and I are hoping to buy has a huge master bedroom with a sitting area, that will be my crafting/reading nook.

    Not much going on with me today. Just tired.
    I have a walk-in closet ;) I'm pimping that out for myself also. Fancy lighting ... etc etc.
