  • Has anyone seen this article?

11yr old forced to marry 20yr old from church who raped her

A friend of mine was forced by her mother to get married at 15 because she caught them having sex. It really doesn't make sense that a minor can't sign a legally binding contract, but can get married.

Now I wish I hadn't :(.  I was totally assuming this happened in a foreign country.  I had no idea that most states don't even have a minimum age a person has to be in order to get married, as long as there is parental approval.

In the U.S., you have to be 18 to legally sign, even a basic contract.  But it's totes fine for a 10 or 11-year-old to marry a grown man.

And, people fighting to set minimum ages are actually given pushback.  I mean, just when I think "well, duh, this is an issue EVERYONE can agree on", I'm apparently still so wrong.

But that's just the legal part of it.  The idea that it's SO much better for a pregnant child to marry the kind of brutal monster who RAPED a LITTLE GIRL, than be a "shameful unwed mother" is just too much for me to even process.

God bless that first clerk who refused to issue a marriage license because the "bride" was only 11.  I only wish every single clerk in that state would have had the gumption to do the same.

    Edited to add:

It just occurred to me, I bet it is a lot of the same f**kwads who think pre-teens getting married is just fine and great.  Bonus points if the groom is a grown man, getting that child bride.  But same sex marriage is the downfall of society.

  • @short+sassy but people don't believe in rape culture...

I understand most of these laws (or lack thereof) were from when the country and states were new and it was more acceptable for a 10 year old girl to get married because that was the only way to protect her family, but these are definitely laws that need to change.

Sadly, yes.  I can just picture the "groom" saying, "Rape?!?  What?!?  No, no.  She just didn't know what she wanted.  Besides, she's my wife now, so that makes it okay."

I hadn't seen that article but I saw one recently, which I think is local, about a 10 year old pregnant from rape. WTF. The girl's mom is in jail so there is already enough unrest at that house I'm sure, I can't even imagine going through rape let alone pregnancy at 10.

It's the 'being sexually attracted to a 10yr old' part I can't get over

My SIL was forced into a teen marriage w/ her first husband, who she was essentially 'sold' to for drugs for her parents.
The whole idea, in this country, that parents can sign away ANYTHING for their kids is so messed up.

I understand (some of) the practicalities of why an adult can sign away some of a minor's rights (hell, I needed to give a kid an ice pack at work yesterday and it took an extra 5 minutes because I had to hunt down kid's mom and get permission--I totally should need her OK to give a kid 'optional' medical treatment (although if she hadn't been available, we have work-arounds for that)), but the fact that parents can opt out of their kid's rights to bodily autonomy, mariatl choice, educational needs, etc is horrifyingly awful.

And heaven forbid we consider right of the child sign-ons here :(
