Wedding Woes

Monday work vent that’s probably a little unfair

So I have a guy on my team; he’s made a lot of mistakes recently, didn’t get things done on time, and even though he’s trying hard he’s just not getting it done.

Today is our busiest day of the year. I have a ton of meetings, we have a massive deadline that can’t be pushed and we’re already behind because of things he did wrong.

And he comes to work sick. Makes a bunch more mistakes and then says he needs to leave. I can’t blame him for being sick, so not his fault. But we’re behind because of him and now the rest of my team has to pick up his work that he can’t finish. I don’t want someone here if they’re sick but this is annoying AF.

Re: Monday work vent that’s probably a little unfair

  • That is annoying! If he had not come in at all would it have been better since he couldn't have made new mistakes? I hope he's on some sort of PIP
  • @charlotte989875, at a previous job, we had to fire an employee because he could not competently do the job.  I felt really bad for him, because it wasn't for lack of trying or because he was a flake or anything like that.  He even took extra classes related to the programming he used at the job.  The company paid for the classes, but he did it on his own time.  However, his job was at a client site.  They gave him multiple chances also.  But, ultimately, when a client tells you they aren't satisfied with that person's work and want a different employee, then that's what needs to happen.  I hope the guy at your work is able to pull it together and improve.  But I understand how frustrating it must be for you and your other coworkers.

I took a 4-day weekend.  You'd think that was a good thing, but most of it was not relaxing at all.  A LOT happened.  Most of it stressful and "too much" for me to think about and talk about right now.  Nothing tragic.  Just frustrated with the constant working our asses off to get things done, yet the to-do and problems list grows faster than what we can check off, because it is like one thing after another of unexpected stuff.

On the plus-side.  The major plus side.  Kitten stories!...

We did adopt the kitten I was talking about last week!  I am already the worst cat-mom because I don't have pics to share yet.  But I promise to do that tomorrow.  I have some on my phone, but my workplace doesn't allow access to the USB ports on my computer.

She is 3 months old and the pics on their site just didn't give me perspective for how TINY she is!  OMG, she is so little and cute.  She's about 7" long (no tail), 4" high, and about 4 lbs.  She was pretty shy at the shelter and didn't seem very interested in us, but did let us pet her and handle her.  We didn't let that stop us.  She's so young, we figured she'd warm up to us...and she already has!  She is such a sweetie.  Usually wants to be curled up on one of our laps.  And if we pick her up and put her back down because we are standing up, she looks up at us and meows...with this little, tiny voice...in protest.

Her name at the shelter was Maple.  We were originally going to name her something else, but Maple grew on my H and I liked it fine also.  However, we did add the middle name "Bar".  So now her name is more related to our (H and me) favorite donut...Maple Bar...than to a particular type of tree, lol.

She was understandably frightened of our dog, Izzy, at first.  But we were very surprised at how quickly she got over that.  There is still some "nervous tension" between them.  But, as long as neither one of them moves suddenly, they can be next to each other.  They've also been close enough multiple times to sniff each other.

Izzy was hilarious.  She is about as scared of Maple Bar, as Maple Bar was of her, smh.  There were a few times were Izzy was even shaking a little bit, if Maple got too close.  Izzy, seriously.  You are 5x the weight of this tiny kitten, lmao.  But Izzy seems a lot more comfortable now also.  FWIW, Izzy has never shown aggression to any person or animal.  But we know fear can also make animals unpredictable and have been closely monitoring their interactions.

  • He sucks.  Ugh.  That's annoying and you're not being unfair.  If he'd actually done the work on time, with fewer mistakes, then I'd say you were being harsh.  But getting sick is just icing on the shit cake that he's been baking with his lack of speed and proficiency.

The weekend was pretty good even though I had to work Saturday.  We had a great time with my parents Saturday night.  My aunt was also there because she was helping out last week after my mom came home.  We had a nice chat.

Yesterday was pretty good as well.  The weather was so nice DH got a lot of outside stuff done. I made a ton of snacks.  It was a great game to watch too, but the halftime show was the highlight.

DefConn isn't feeling so hot. We let him stay home today.  He doesn't have a fever and his throat isn't red or swollen, but he is pretty congested.  We'll see if he's ready to go back tomorrow or if I need to get his ears checked for infection.
  • @charlotte989875 I mean points for trying to go into work, but seriously should he be at that job itself if he's unable to keep up?

    @short+sassy  KITTEN PHOTOS!!! NOWWWW

@mrsconn23 poor DefConn seems to be getting hit with bugs this year :(

Going to post this first because it's cute and needs to be seen!
BabyKitten loves Angel. She loves she can pet him because Penny is a "pet me with your eyes!" kinda cat.
Past few days she has just been desperate to pet him but he's been a dick and just bailing when she's near.
This morning, BabyKitten wanders into the kitchen as he's eating and I'm getting stuff ready. I tell her that he's eating and to give him space.
She goes over to his side - towards behind him - and pets his sides. Then starts to ball her hands and I thought she was going to grip his fur but she starts giving him scritches! Then as he's notably getting antsy to leave, she leans down and gives him a hug going "aww, soft!"
    Needless to say, I cried.

    Weekend was ok.
Friday BabyKitten was at IL's place. No bottle for nap! We had dinner there, and basically came home with enough time for her to wind down, and go to bed.

Saturday we planned on a date. So M and BabyKitten went to swimming, came home, ate breakfast and she had 1.5oz of milk, then nap. She took a bit to settle but went easier than expected.
She got up, we took her to IL's again and then went to see Star Wars.
I definitely cried more than expected for a Star Wars movie. Not a fan of the end but just personal thought. M had to explain it a bit, but I still wasn't a fan even after I understood better.
Our local theater got major renos and this was the first time we had gone since they were done. I'm kicking myself for not getting a donut though.

BabyKitten ended up eating dinner at IL's and she's been eating more in past couple days. She also spent a good chunk of last week not eating due to teeth, so she's making up for it.
Veggie stirfy with bits of chicken and shrimp and I think beef, and some rice.
    As MIL explained, BabyKitten is busy but not like M - which gives me hope because MIL thinks a lot of his "busy-ness" could have been chalked up to his ADHD {he was diagnosed at 5 y.o}

Sunday was pretty lowkey. Groceries done. BabyKitten got fussy near the end, so we had to speed it up. Gave her pouch and she went for nap again without bottle.
She ended up waking up in a total cranky mood, so we were glad for bedtime.

He had a bout of strep in December, but he's been mostly on the up and up since.  I really think it's a cold + being tired.

I thought I saw you mention him being down {like a couple colds kinda idea} not long before that too.
    Regardless, sucks :(

Yeah, we all have had mild crap (sneezes/coughs) all month.  It's mostly been the weather being unable to pick a lane and stay there.  ;)
  • It’s a Monday-ish Monday all right. I’ve been nonstop busy since coming in. I’m finally at lunch and trying to convince myself to do my usual walk. I couldn’t get to it most of last week because I wasn’t able to take more than a thirty minute lunch and we were slammed. I don’t want any overtime this week. Just my nice boring usual schedule.

This weekend was good. I did my favorite workout hike for the first time in months. And for the first time post injury. I actually kept a really good pace. The only thing that slowed me down was the fact that it was 85 fucking degrees out. I was dying in the heat. Yesterday was fun. We watched the super bowl at FSIL’s place. She and I really didn’t care about the game, so we ended up taking drinks to the spa. Then we all went to bed at 9:30. It was great.

    Good vibes for DefConn @mrsconn23

    Congrats on the kitty! @short+sassy

  • It has since been deleted.  But in yet another segment of, "Trump, PLEASE Take Geography Lessons".  Trump tweeted a congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs along with the great state of Kansas, on their Superbowl win.

And, ya know what.  I wouldn't side-eye the average person for thinking that Kansas City is in Kansas...(there is a Kansas City in Kansas, it's just not THE Kansas City).  I know I have to occasionally remind myself, "Oh.  Wait, no.  KC is in Missouri."  But then, neither myself nor the average person are the President of the United States.  Who should really have the basic facts about their country straight.  Especially before they say something publicly.

KC is in both MO and KS (majority is in MO, I believe), it's the same city.  There's even a road called "State Line" that splits them pretty true to the border as you're driving along.  The Chiefs belong to MO (everyone is super excited that both the NHL and the NFL champs are in the same state right now).  He's the President, KC is a pretty damn big city (it's the size of NYC w/half...maybe,  don't remember the exact fact anymore...of the population) and he should just know.  OR he shouldn't be handling his own damn Twitter account.

I'm in a grumpy mood after talking to a client that I'm daydreaming about throttling.  "Oh, I don't open mail."  I don't open my junk mail, but I opened the mail from my attorney's office!!!

Thanks for the further clarification.  I always thought they were two separate cities.  It feels like people always clarify that KC is in MO.  Ah ha!  I looked it up.  The MO portion is much larger.  Both population-wise and land-wise.  Plus, yeah, where The Chiefs are from.

The KC, MO portion is a bit under 500K people.  The 38th largest city in the country.  The KC, KS portion adds (I think) another 160K.  If you include the surrounding suburbs, it's a population of about 2M.

Right!  It's a good-sized city.  Plus he has a staff of who knows how many people standing around ready to research or do whatever he wants.  Like the 1-minute Google search I just did to find out "how much of Kansas City is in MO".

    This exactly what I thought!
  • I don't think it's too much to expect the fucking POTUS to know that KC is in MO. But alas, we have the dumbest piece of crap ever in the White House. Does no one proofread his shit?

Also, that's so annoying about your co-worker Charlotte. Could he have at least worked from home?

Weekend was good. Had my company party Friday. The rest of the weekend was pretty mellow. We watched the SB at home.
  • It's head slappingly bad to have a POTUS who has to be corrected on GEOGRAPHY.   I'm sure he isn't the first but it's certainly a poor state when he's making these errors AND refuses to have a sense of humor enough to laugh at himself.   I know George W Bush was also not loved BUT he had an ability to laugh at himself.   And humility can go a long way.

Charlotte, hopefully this guy gets his ish together.   It's frustrating when the guy who isn't doing what he needs to do is also the guy who is sick and infecting everyone.

DH is 40!  He was pleasantly surprised at his party, and I managed to keep the secret that one of his best friends was coming until Saturday.   He and his wife spent the night and they hung out Sunday a bit.   Then Sunday night we had the ILs over for leftovers from the party (we still have a TON of food) and watched the Super Bowl.

Last night we celebrated DH's actual birthday.   Chiquita made him two elastic bracelets and I managed to surprise him with his gifts.   While everyone was at work I assembled a bar cart (I too can work an allen wrench!) and wrapped his other two gifts - engraved high ball glasses and a bottle of Jefferson's Ocean.

Dinner was mustard crusted lamb over couscous and Carvel cake.

Now we just need to stay healthy to get through Valentine's Day and also to celebrate DH and my mom who has a birthday Thursday.

IDK if MO is the only state that weirdly has split cities like KC and StL.  Both have the MO sides, KC has KS side and StL has IL side.  IIRC, StL, IL is considered terrible.  In both cities, the MO side is considered the more fun side.   My coworkers and I were trying to remember if we'd even been to the KS/IL side of each city.  I can remember clubbing in StL, IL (not the best idea I've ever had), but that's the only time.  My aunt lived in the KS part, but we always went to the MO part of museums and stuffs.  I have old college BFFs in each city, both on MO side.

Is it 5 yet?  I really need it to be 5:00 pm.  I'm getting a haircut and I'm so bored with my hair, but don't know what to do.  Then I think I'm going to a movie.

ETA:  This has sent me down a rabbit hole.  I didn't know that KCMo and KCKS, have their own mayors.  The KCMo mayoral race is always a big deal throughout the state, really, b/c it can be seen as a springboard to bigger offices. I did know that there is bad feelings between the 2 sides b/c of taxes, annexation, growth, etc.  I really don't know as much about StL's inner politics except the County vs. City issue (StL county vs. StL city), even though I go there more often that KC.  Also, I can't find a good list of "split cities" b/c they all start off arguing about how to define the city.
  • @VarunaTT I remember being surprised about smoking being allowed in a bar once while visiting KC. Then someone explained that we were on the KS side where such things were allowed. I think it might have even been a particular county we were in too.

In Louisiana, you can smoke in bars and casinos in some parishes (counties).  They just made it illegal in Orleans parish...where New Orleans is...I want to say about a year ago or so.

There are two nearby casinos in Jefferson parish (next to Orleans).  One of them has ash trays in the restroom stalls.  A lot of MS casinos have ash trays in restroom stalls also.  Even when they're clean (and, to be fair, they usually are), I don't think words alone can describe how vile and gross I find just the idea of actually smoking.  In a small, enclosed environment.  Like a bathroom stall ((shudder)).

Wow.  I can't even remember when the smoking ban happened in MO, it's been awhile.  It started on mostly individual business levels and then city levels, but I think there's a state wide now.
  • I think it's statewide here in CT.   The casinos are the only hold-outs and the way I understand it it's because the casino's themselves are considered their own sovereign country and the restaurants inside them run by US companies have to follow US laws.  You are able to smoke at various spots at the tables/machines but the dining is at least smoke free.   I can't remember if you can smoke outside at restaurants in the summer here but I'm thankful that at least most of the stink is gone.
  • We don't have a smoking ban in our state for bars (restaurants and businesses have one and then several counties do as well) and we don't have one in the county.  There's one bar in town that I can think of that still allows smoking (and that's a maybe, since we haven't been there in a few years).  The other bar that did allow smoking and they went smoke-free last year.
  • We still don't have a statewide ban on everything. Most of the counties in the metro area have bans, but there are exceptions all over. e.g. A bar/restaurant can opt to be 18+ and allow smoking in most counties. There is a kind of famous local burger place that made a big deal of it when the 18+ rule came out about 15 years ago and decided that they made more money off smokers than kids, so they were going to be an 18+ burger joint. Later, in keeping with the times, they went no smoking, but still decided to stay 18+.

The actual city of Atlanta is proposing a complete ban on everything, which would close the smoking lounges in the airport. People are going ape-shit about it, saying it's going to curtail international traffic. It's so ridiculous that this is still a thing in 2020.
  • really @mrsconn23 I had no idea it was still allowed in bars. I thought they all had to be smoke free unless it was a private club or something. Not that I go to bars anymore anyway

I thought it was statewide as well, since almost all the other border counties to Indy have an all out smoking ban...but nope.  It was a county by county thing for bars. I mean, I'm sure there's city ordinances in some places.  But we have no such thing.

Oh, goodness!  It was a big ole' deal when they banned smoking in bars and casinos in New Orleans.  Overall, it seemed really unpopular.  On the last day, many of the bars had a "moment of silence" to mark the end of an era.  Some of them played funeral dirges as the clock was about to hit midnight.  But, like anywhere, the vast majority of bars are onesie "mom and pop" kind of places.

The big guns and money was Harrahs.  They came in with an army of lawyers to fight it.  Or at least exempt casinos from the ordinance.  They still lost.

But, to an extent, found a way around it, lol.  Within a year of the smoking ban, they got permission/permits to open outside gaming areas.  And those were constructed with a quickness.

Come to think of it, it must have been at least 2-3 years ago the smoking ban was put in place because their outside gaming areas have been there for awhile now.  I don't smoke but, on a nice day, I like them!  It's a unique experience to play video poker outside.  The area is only slot machines and video poker.  No table games.  And the entrances to them are from inside the casino, so it's not like underage people can just walk up and play them.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • No smoking here anywhere except maybe at the Native Casinos. But as someone who gets migraines with concentrated cigarette exposure, I’m pretty grateful for the bans.

We had a similar thing happen where nearly all of the restaurants/bars that could, opened some sort of patio area.  TBH, I still don't see many people smoking even on the patios, but lots of people enjoy being on the patios.

Even as a former smoker and one that will still casually smoke now and then, I prefer non-smoking places.  I still remember having to wash my hair 3-4 times in college to get the cigarette smoke out of it (this was in the late 90s).
  • I think it is statewide in IN too. It also started out at the city/county level, but I'm pretty sure that has changed. I can't stand being around smoke even though my mother was a chain smoker - maybe that is why!

  • DH is from KC and his family tells legends about Prohibition. The state line doesn't exactly follow State Line Rd., and supposedly there were a few basement speakeasys that could just move the inventory across the state line within the room whenever the cops from either state showed up.
