NWR - Donor for First US Face Transplant Revealed

http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2010/12/lakewood_family_goes_public_wi.html

I feel like it would be so strange for these people to be staring at the face of their own wife and mother......  Definitely an amazing work of science.

That's both terrifyingly creepy and awesome and amazing at the same time.
  • That is definitely very awesome. What an awesome Christmas present for that lady.
  • I think it's amazing that more than 50 people were able to be treated in some way because she was an organ donor.

For sure.  That is why I'm a donor.

  • That really is amazing!  And I just wish more people would make the decision to be organ donors.  My mom had a kidney transplant back in 2002 and I actually have a piece of bone in my back which was also from a donor.

  • This is awesome, but I'm somewhat disappointed that nobody has made a Nicolas Cage/ John Travolta reference yet :(
  • From what I have heard about face transplants, the recipient really doesn't end up looking like the donor, as the recipient's bone structure etc is often very different from the donor. But I had the same misconception--that they'd look like the donor. Then I saw a special or read some articles in our newspaper, and they explained all the stuff about bone structure etc. Made sense.

This is true.  But they were talking about seeing some similarities in the article.  I feel like maybe WE wouldn't see that many similarities, but if it's a loved one, I could see how they might be able to see something.
