Dominican Republic question

I've been to PuntaCana and am wondering if the other parts of DR have as nice of beaches, or if PuntaCana is the nicest? A group of our friends are looking to go on vacation and it seems that DR is the most cost friendly.  I've been just looking at PuntaCana but figure I should maybe check other parts of the island as well.

Anyone have any recommendations, suggestions, etc?

    I much prefer Puerto Plata over P unta Cana.  We were there this past December and it was great.

    The last time I went to DR I stayed here http://www.wyndham.com/hotels/PUJDP/main.wnt

    The beach was absolutely beautiful.  It's in La Romana, which is near Santo Domingo/the southern part of the country.  It's not at all touristy, most of the visitors to the hotel are either European or locals.  I know not many people are comfortable with that, so I just thought I'd warn you that it's not at all Americanized.

    We stayed at the Grand Oasis Marien in Puerto Plata and loved it!
